Current recycling and SFQ signal transfer in large scale RSFQ circuits
H. Kang, Steven B. Kaplan
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

The practical implementation of RSFQ technology in most digital electronics application areas requires much more complexity than the presently developed circuits. There are two important issues in building large-scale RSFQ circuits: 1) the recycling of the bias currents and 2) the transfer of SFQ pulses between circuits located far apart. RSFQ circuits are well known to operate with DC current bias. Even though the DC current biasing is more forgiving than the problematic AC biasing, it can stil

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

For the development of a 13.2 kV/630 A bifilar winding type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), a visualization study has been conducted to clarify boiling characteristics during the quench of the high-Tc SFCL. A series of experiments was carried out using a stainless steel strip on a G10 plate as a heating element to simulate the quench state of the high-Tc SFCL. A pulse of DC power input was applied to the strip in saturated and subcooled liquid nitrogen. The magnitude of the

The Short-Circuit Characteristics of a DC Reactor Type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter With Fault Detection and Signal Control of the Power Converter
Min Cheol Ahn, H. Kang, D.K. Bae, D.K. Park, Yong Soo Yoon, S.J. Lee, T.K. Ko
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

In general case of DC reactor type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), a fault current gradually increases during the fault. It takes above 5 cycles to cut off the fault in the existing power system installed the conventional circuit breakers (CBs). Therefore, the fault current increases during the fault even if the SFCL is installed. This paper proposes a technique for decaying the fault current with the function of the fault detection and control of power converter of the SFCL. Using

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

A high-T/sub c/ superconducting (HTS) DC reactor has been developed as a part of DC reactor type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) rated on 6.6 kV/200 A. The DC reactor was a solenoid coil and was wound with a 4-parallel stacked tape. This coil has 5 layers which are connected in series each other. The inductance of the coil is about 84 mH. This paper deals with the design, fabrication and testing of the DC reactor. For this design of the coil, a prototype solenoid coil had been used.

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

As a part of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program in Korea being performed from 2001, a DC reactor type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is being developed. The target of the first phase is to develop a 6.6 kV/200 A class 3-phase SFCL as a prototype for a 154 kV class. This prototype SFCL has a magnet wound with a high-T/sub c/ superconducting wire (Bi-2223) operating at 65 K. The magnet uses solenoid bobbins with grooves for the tape wire. Its inductance is about 84 mH. An AC-DC po

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

This paper deals with characteristics of a High-Tc superconductor (HTS) persistent current switch (PCS) system considering the n-value. I also present its operational characteristics through experiments. A HTS PCS system mainly consists of a PCS, a HTS magnet load, and a magnet power supply (MPS). The HTS magnet load was made-up of two double pancake coils in series. In order to measure the persistent current with respect to the magnet flux changes, a hall sensor was installed at the center of t

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

We joined 19-multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconductor tapes and fabricated double-pancake coils by using resistive- and superconducting-joint methods. The critical current ratio (CCR) of the jointed tape and the decay characteristics, joint resistance, and n-value of the pancake coils were evaluated. The joint resistance of the coils was characterized by the field decay technique. It was observed that the CCR was higher in the joined tape made by the resistive-joint method, compared to that by th

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

This paper deals with feasibility of fault current limiter (FCL) by using Bi-2223 high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire. The FCL using HTS wire has some advantages of stability, flexibility of structure and cost compared with existing superconducting FCLs using bulk or thin film. Even if the FCL using HTS wire has zero resistance in normal state, it needs to be wound as a bifilar winding for non inductance. In this paper, four types of FCL module with bifilar winding were suggested, manufa

Design and Cooling Characteristic Results of Cryogenic System for 6.6 kV/200 A Inductive Fault Current Limiter
H. Kang, Min Cheol Ahn, H.J. Kim, Heng‐Chia Chang, Tae Kuk Ko
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

The conduction-cooled cryogenic cooling system for 1.2 kV/80 A inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was fabricated and tested for its cooling characteristics in 2002. The observed thermal stability of the conduction-cooled system was very unreliable and precarious for the applied superconducting equipment with very large variation of currents like SFCL. Therefore, we replaced the conduction-cooled system with the sub-cooled nitrogen system for the 6.6 kV/200 A SFCL. In this pap

Design and Manufacture of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter With Bypass Reactor by Employing Two Different Types of HTS Wires
Min Cheol Ahn, D.K. Bae, Seong Eun Yang, D.K. Park, Tae Kuk Ko, H. Kang, Yong Soo Yoon, Bok-Yeol Seok, Kideok Sim
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

A resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using Bi2223 wire and YBCO coated conductor has been developed. The SFCL has two coils; one is a bifilarly wound coil wound using coated conductor, and the other is typical inductive coil using Bi2223 wire. The bifilar coil plays the role of switching when a fault occurs, while it has a very small impedance in the normal operation. On the other hand, the inductive coil using Bi2223 wire has a very small resistance but a large inductance. T

SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

The high-temperature superconducting (HTS) electric equipment using Bi-2223 wire successfully commercialized 1st generation HTS wire, has been developing by many research groups. HTS coil is one of the most important parts in HTS electric equipment. To enlarge the critical current, the operating temperature of the equipment tends to go down and number of HTS wire tends to increase. Thus, it is very important to determine the whole critical current of HTS coil for the stable operation of HTS equi
