Long-term in vivo glucose monitoring using fluorescent hydrogel fibers
Yun Jung Heo, Hideaki Shibata, Teru Okitsu, Tetsuro Kawanishi, Shoji Takeuchi
SJR Q1Proceedings of the National Academy of SciencesOA

The use of fluorescence-based sensors holds great promise for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in vivo, allowing wireless transdermal transmission and long-lasting functionality in vivo. The ability to monitor glucose concentrations in vivo over the long term enables the sensors to be implanted and replaced less often, thereby bringing CGM closer to practical implementation. However, the full potential of long-term in vivo glucose monitoring has yet to be realized because current fluorescence

Fluorescent-based biodegradable microneedle sensor array for tether-free continuous glucose monitoring with smartphone application

SJR Q1Science AdvancesOA

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) allows patients with diabetes to manage critical disease effectively and autonomously and prevent exacerbation. A painless, wireless, compact, and minimally invasive device that can provide CGM is essential for monitoring the health conditions of freely moving patients with diabetes. Here, we propose a glucose-responsive fluorescence-based highly sensitive biodegradable microneedle CGM system. These ultrathin and ultralight microneedle sensor arrays continuous

Towards Smart Tattoos: Implantable Biosensors for Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Yun Jung Heo, Shoji Takeuchi
SJR Q1Advanced Healthcare Materials

Diabetes can strike at any age, from childhood to adulthood, and lasts a lifetime. Thus, it is important to find ways to increase the quality of life for diabetic patients through intensive, continuous care of blood glucose concentrations. Glucose biosensors that are implanted under the skin are promising for continuous glucose monitoring because they can constantly read blood glucose concentrations and signal a warning in case of hypo- or hyperglycemia. The demand for subcutaneous glucose biose

Scalable fabrication of microneedle arrays via spatially controlled UV exposure

SJR Q1Microsystems & NanoengineeringOA

This paper describes a theoretical estimation of the geometry of negative epoxy-resist microneedles prepared via inclined/rotated ultraviolet (UV) lithography based on spatially controlled UV exposure doses. In comparison with other methods based on UV lithography, the present method can create microneedle structures with high scalability. When negative photoresist is exposed to inclined/rotated UV through circular mask patterns, a three-dimensional, needle-shaped distribution of the exposure do

Toward Long-Term Implantable Glucose Biosensors for Clinical Use
Yun Jung Heo, Seong-Hyok Kim
SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors have led a paradigm shift to painless, continuous, zero-finger pricking measurement in blood glucose monitoring. Recent electrochemical CGM sensors have reached two-week lifespans and no calibration with clinically acceptable accuracy. The system with the recent CGM sensors is identified as an “integrated glucose monitoring system,” which can replace finger-pricking glucose-testing for diabetes treatment decisions. Although such innovation has brought

Self-focusing 3D lithography with varying refractive index polyethylene glycol diacrylate

SJR Q2Applied Physics Express

This work presents self-focusing 3D lithography based on the refractive index changes of polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) during photopolymerization. Since the polymerization of PEGDA leads to an increase in the refractive index, the UV light rays in the PEGDA undergo a refraction effect during exposure, thus being focused and forming 3D photopolymerized structures. We demonstrate the potential of self-focusing 3D lithography by fabricating PEGDA microneedles and trapezoid-shaped microwell

Development of an electrochemical biosensor for non-invasive cholesterol monitoring via microneedle-based interstitial fluid extraction

SJR Q1TalantaOA

In this study, we present the development of an innovative electrochemical biosensor integrated into a microneedle-based system for non-invasive and sensitive quantification of cholesterol levels in interstitial fluid (ISF). The biosensor employs a graphene-based electrode with a polyelectrolyte interlayer to immobilize cholesterol oxidase (ChOx), enabling selective cholesterol detection. Graphene oxide is electrochemically reduced to form a conductive layer, and PANI is chosen as the optimal po

Transdermal water-in-oil nanocarriers of nitric oxide for triggering penile erection

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Men's sexual health can have significant effects on a man's self-esteem, sexual relationship and male reproductive functions. Although commercially available drugs (e.g., VIAGRA and CIALIS) show effective treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), patients with severe ED fail to respond to these medicines. Topical nitric-oxide (NO) delivery to penis can be a painless, alternative solution with severe ED because NO triggers erection and diffuses to the trabecular arteries and smooth muscles in the p

Development of albumin monitoring system with hepatic hypoxia-on-a-chip

SJR Q1TalantaOA

Hypoxia plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of various liver diseases, and albumin is one of the important biomarkers secreted by the liver. In this study, we developed an albumin monitoring system composed of hepatic hypoxia-on-a-chip and an albumin sensor to study liver function change due to hypoxia. In hepatic hypoxia-on-a-chip, we vertically stack an oxygen-scavenging channel on a liver on a chip with a thin gas-permeable membrane in the middle. This unique design of the hepatic hyp

SJR Q1SensorsOA

We propose a biomedical sensor system for continuous monitoring of glucose concentration. Despite recent advances in implantable biomedical devices, mm sized devices have yet to be developed due to the power limitation of the device in a tissue. We here present a mm sized wireless system with backscattered frequency-modulation communication that enables a low-power operation to read the glucose level from a fluorescent hydrogel sensor. The configuration of the reader structure is optimized for a

A Deep-Learning Approach for Identifying a Drunk Person Using Gait Recognition
Suah Park, Byunghoon Bae, Kyungmin Kang, Hyunjee Kim, Mi Song Nam, Jumyung Um, Yun Jung Heo
SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

Various accidents caused by alcohol consumption have recently increased in prevalence and have become a huge social problem. There have been efforts to identify drunk individuals using mobile devices; however, it is difficult to apply this method to a large number of people. A promising approach that does not involve wearing any sensors or subject cooperation is a markerless, vision-based method that only requires a camera to classify a drunk gait. Herein, we first propose a markerless, vision-b

Stretchable cell culture platforms using micropneumatic actuators
Yun Jung Heo, Tetsuo Kan, Eiji Iwase, Kiyoshi Matsumoto, Isao Shimoyama
SJR Q3Micro & Nano LettersOA

A stretchable cell culture platform in which elastic micropneumatic actuators are embedded has been developed. By using the softlithography of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the platform can be fabricated to any size and shape. It also permits cell culture by using the same standard methods that one would use with a Petri dish and it is transparent, permitting optical inspection of the cells. Thus, the platform is promising for studying cell responses because of mechanical stimulus. In this report
