15AASI is closely correlated with BP variability. The result of this study shows that AASI is not only a parameter for arterial stiffness, but also a parameter for BP variability.
BACKGROUND: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (CMP) is a common and disabling disease in diabetic patients, however no effective treatments have been developed. Although granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) improves heart function in myocardial infarction, its effect on non-ischemic CMP such as diabetic CMP is unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effects of G-CSF on diabetic CMP in a rat model of type II diabetes. METHODS: Twenty 7-week-old male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OL
It is not clear whether the inverse relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and blood pressure (BP) could be generalizable to the general elderly population. We used data from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study sample consisted of 8439 men and postmenopausal women aged 50 years and older. We evaluated the relationship between BMD and BP. When adjusted for covariates, femur neck T-score [coefficient = -0.391, 95% confidence interval (CI)
Using data from 2007 to 2011 of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we evaluated the influence of coronary heart disease (CHD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as measured by the EQ-5D in comparison with the general population and the predictors of HRQoL in CHD. Compared with the general population, HRQoL was impaired in the EQ-5D dimensions of mobility, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. The impairment of HRQoL was much greater in the old
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Inappropriately high left ventricular mass (iLVM) is known to be related to cardiovascular prognosis. A non-dipper pattern has a greater mean left ventricular (LV) mass than the dipper pattern in hypertensive patients. However, the appropriateness of LV mass in dipper or non-dipper patterns has not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study was to define the relationship between nocturnal dipping and the appropriateness of LV mass. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Using
BMD was correlated inversely with the 10-year risk for CHD in the healthy male population. This result suggests that in the male population, measurement of BMD could be useful for prediction of the risk of CHD.
Background and Objectives: Ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) is well known as a predictor of cardiovascular mor-tality in hypertensive patients. Mathematically, AASI reflect the standard deviation (SD) of blood pressure (BP) variation. AASI is measured higher levels in non-dipper than dipper. Thus, AASI has a possibility of not only reflecting arterial stiffness but also BP variability and/or autonomic nervous dysfunction. Subjects and Methods: Consecutive data from 418 untreated hypert

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Adipose tissue may be one of the sources of the humoral factors increasing left ventricular mass (LVM) via non-hemodynamic mechanisms. The involvement of visceral obesity in excessive or inappropriate LVM has not been established. We investigated the effect of abdominal circumference on the inappropriateness of LVM in non-obese patients. METHODS: Echocardiographic parameters for LVM and the indices for diastolic function were analyzed in 312 non-obese patients. Inapprop
Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder with a prolonged clinical course. Since this disorder is considered to be at increased risk of thromboembolism, therapy is mainly focused on the decreased risk of thrombohemorrhagic events by use of cytotoxic agents. Anagrelide is a phosphodiesterase III inhibitor which is utilized in the treatment of ET for the reduction of platelets. However, patients treated with anagrelide might experience cardiovascular adverse effects
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The structural significance of the inappropriateness of left ventricular mass (iLVM) is known to be an important prognostic factor for cardiovascular events; however, the functional changes associated with iLVM have not been established. This study was performed to determine if diastolic dysfunction is associated with iLVM using a tissue Doppler technique. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Three hundred sixty consecutive subjects, including 221 hypertension patients from the echoc
OBJECTIVES: Gastric resection may predispose gallstone formation. However, the mechanism has not been clearly understood. To evaluate the relationship between gastric resection and gallstone formation, we compared gallbladder(GB) motility in gastrectomized patients and control subjects. METHODS: We compared the GB volume and ejection fraction of the 46 gastrectomized patients with 37 healthy controls using real time ultrasonography. RESULTS: GB volume increased significantly in the gastrectomize
OBJECTIVES: The PR interval on the electrocardiogram represents conduction time from the onset of atrial activation through His-Purkinje conduction system during a normal cardiac cycle. While its behavior at rest and during exposure to various cardioactive drugs is well documented, there exist few reports which describe PR interval variations during exercise in normal control and patient groups. In the present study, we examined the behavior of the PR intervals during various stages of exercise,
BMD is a consistent and independent determining factor of LVMI, BMI and carotid IMT in postmenopausal women.
Cardiac hemangiomas are rare primary tumors of the heart and constitute only 2.8% of primary cardiac tumors. They are classified into capillary, cavernous, epitheloid and arteriovenous type and the last one is the most uncommon type. We experienced a case of cardiac hemangioma which was diagnosed as arteriovenous type for the first time in Korea in the literature. The patient was a 54-year-old woman who presented with palpitation and anterior chest pain. The diagnosis was based upon coronary ang
