15The functions of many long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in human cancers remain to be clarified. The lncRNA Hox transcript antisense intergenic RNA (HOTAIR) has been reported to reprogram chromatin organization and promote breast and colorectal cancer metastasis, the involvement of lncRNAs in cervical cancer is just beginning to be studied. In the present study, we examined the expression and the functional role of HOTAIR in cervical cancer. HOTAIR expression was determined in cervical cancer tissu
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection of the CNS produces changes in dendritic morphology that correlate with cognitive decline in patients with HIV-1 associated dementia (HAD). Here, we investigated the effects of HIV-1 transactivator of transcription (Tat), a protein released by virus-infected cells, on synapses between hippocampal neurons using an imaging-based assay that quantified clusters of the scaffolding protein postsynaptic density 95 fused to green fluorescent protein (PSD95-
PURPOSE: Women under 40 years old are at increased risk for developing human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive or triple negative subtype and more advanced breast cancer, yet young age itself has also historically been an independent prognostic factor. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, we examined data for 271,173 women with stage I-III breast cancer between 2010 and 2015. Using Fine and Gray regression models to account for competing
NASSM with immediate transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous reconstruction is a viable surgical treatment in breast cancer patients in any stage. Recurrence and complication rates for NASSM were similar to those for standard surgical breast cancer treatments.
INTRODUCTION: Metformin use has recently been observed to decrease both the rate and mortality of breast cancer. Our study was aim to determine whether metformin use is associated with survival in diabetic breast cancer patients by breast cancer subtype and systemic treatment. METHODS: Data from the Asan Medical Center Breast Cancer Database from 1997 to 2007 were analyzed. The study cohort comprised 6,967 nondiabetic patients, 202 diabetic patients treated with metformin, and 184 diabetic patie
PURPOSE: Vitamin D deficiency may be an indicator of poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer before surgery. We investigated the association between serum vitamin D concentration and breast cancer prognosis according to intrinsic cancer subtypes. METHODS: From June to December 2006, serum 25-OHD was measured in 310 Korean women with breast cancer who were treated at the Asan Medical Center, Korea. Clinicopathologic data were examined to determine the prognostic effects of serum 25-OHD. Exp
Because the intrinsic drug resistance of pancreatic cancers is, in part, due to abnormally elevated Nrf2 protein levels, further research on regulating Nrf2 activity may result in the development of novel pancreatic cancer therapies.

OBJECTIVE: CD44(+)CD24(-/low)-expressing tumor cells have been studied as tumorigenic stem cells in vitro study. This study was designed to determine the clinical implication of the CD44 and CD24 expression in breast cancer. METHODS: Tissue microarray blocks containing 643 consecutive cases of invasive breast carcinomas from 1993 to 1998 were immunostained for CD44 and CD24. The median follow-up period was 127 months. RESULTS: CD44(-)CD24(+) phenotype was associated with frequent hormone recepto
Abstract With the growth of photoenergy harvesting and thermal engineering, photothermal materials (PTMs) have attracted substantial interest due to their unique functions such as localized heat generation, spatiotemporal thermal controllability, invisibility, and light harvesting capabilities. In particular, π‐conjugated organic PTMs show advantages over inorganic or metallic PTMs in thin film applications due to their large light absorptivity, ease of synthesis and tunability of molecular stru
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Acne scarring is a common complication of acne but no effective single treatment modality has been developed. To compare the efficacy of 1,550 nm Er:Glass fractional laser and chemical reconstruction of skin scar (CROSS) method in the treatment of acne scars. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-face trial was conducted in 20 patients (10 rolling, 10 icepick types) with acne scars. One side was treated with the 1,550 nm Er:Glass fractional laser three times with
INTRODUCTION: Neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) has demonstrated efficacy in post-menopausal patients with hormone-responsive breast cancer. This trial was designed to compare the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) with NET in pre-menopausal breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective, randomised, phase III study, oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive, HER2-negative, and lymph node-positive pre-menopausal breast cancer patients were recruited from 7 hospitals in South Korea.
