이 글은 조지 린드벡의 후기자유주의 문화신학이 종교를 하나의 문화 체계에 비유한 것은 그 잠재적 통찰에도 불구하고 다음의 여덟 가지 문제들을 가진다는 것을 분석하고 있다. 첫째, 린드벡의“실재의 텍스트화”는 신학을 하나님에 대한 담론에서 텍스트에 대한 담론으로 전락시킬 수 있다. 둘째, 린드벡의“수행적-명제적”종교론은 전자유주의적 인식- 명제 종교론과 후기자유주의적 문화- 언어 종교론을 충분히중재하지 못하고 있다. 셋째, 자유주의 신학의 종교론은“경험- 표현”모델로 환원될 수 없으며, 오히려“해석학적- 정치적”모델이라고 불리는 것이 적절하다. 넷째, 종교현상학자들은 종교적 의미 체계를 넘어서는 의도되지 않은 종교적 경험을 린드벡이 간과하고 있다고 지적한다. 다섯째, 신학적 미학자들은 린드벡의 언어 능력에 대한 강조가 신학적엘리트주의를 가져올 위험성이 있으며, 계시의 비언어적이고 미학적인성찰을 통해 보충되어야 한다고 지적한다. 여섯째, 여성신학자들은 린드벡이 성서의 가부장주의를 간과한

“하나님은 선교사 등에 업혀 들어온 병신이 아니다.”는 진술은 현영학의 신학사상을 가장 집약적으로 드러내는 것이다. 이미 현영학의 이러한 진술은 개인의 신학적 사견이라기보다는 민중신학자들에게서 등장하기 시작한 한국민중의 역사 속에 작용하던 하나님의 선교의 사건을 보아야 한다는 집단적 통찰이 요약적으로 전달되고 있는 것이다. 예를 김용복과 안병무가 제시하던 민중의 사회전기로서의 성서관을 차용하여, 한국역사를 일종의 하나님의 선교의 사회전기로서 그는 해석하게 된다. 이 논문은 한국신학의 역사에 있어서 민중신학과 문화신학(혹은 예술신학)이라는 두 이야기의 합류지점으로서의 현영학의 신학사상을 ‘한국민중예술신학’이라는 범주를 통해 고찰하고자 한다.
