15We aimed to investigate the impact of comorbidity burden on mortality in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We analyzed the COVID-19 data from the nationwide health insurance claims of South Korea. Data on demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and mortality records of patients with COVID-19 were extracted from the database. The odds ratios of mortality according to comorbidities in these patients with and without adjustment for age and sex were calculated. The predictive value o
BACKGROUND: A lateral soft tissue release is often performed with distal chevron osteotomy for the correction of hallux valgus deformities. However, many complications of lateral soft tissue release have been reported. To define the necessity of lateral soft tissue release, the authors compared the clinical and radiographic results of distal chevron osteotomy with and without it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 86 consecutive patients (152 feet) were enrolled in this prospective study. In Group A, 45 pat
BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of unrecognized depression in patients with chronic pain, but with no history of psychiatric diseases. METHODS: Patients with chronic pain who did not have a history of psychiatric disease were selected for this study. The Beck Depression Index (BDI) was used to evaluate depression. Participants' socio-demographic characteristics and pain-related characteristics were also recorded. RESULTS: = 0.023), were less likely to have moderate to severe d
The seasonal variations in the circulation of the water mass in the East Sea/Japan Sea have been simulated using a free surface primitive ocean model, RIAMOM (RIAM Ocean Model), comparing the results from GFDL-MOM1 (Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Modular Ocean Model, version 1.1, hereafter MOM) with the GDEM (Generalized Digital Environmental Model) data. Both models appear to successfully reproduce the distinct features of circulation in the East Sea/Japan Sea, such as the NB (Nearshore
BACKGROUND: The long-term incidence of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) after thoracic surgery has not yet been reported. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 4218 consecutive patients who underwent thoracic surgery for lung cancer between 2007 and 2016. We evaluated the long-term incidence of CPSP after thoracic surgery at intervals of 3 months for 36 months. A Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to investigate the predictors of CPSP after
ABSTRACT: Postsurgical patients usually have difficulty in answering the self-report pain scales due to the residual effects of anesthetic or sedative agents in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). A comparative analysis of pain assessment tools used in the PACU is lacking. In this prospective observational study, we compared the intensity of pain using the 11-point numeric rating scale (NRS) and the 4-category verbal rating scale (VRS) thrice, 5 minutes after PACU admission, 20 minutes after th
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have consistently reported a slower recovery of consciousness following remimazolam-based total intravenous anesthesia without flumazenil than with propofol. This study aimed to compare the reversal effect of flumazenil on the recovery of consciousness after remimazolam-based total intravenous anesthesia with the propofol recovery profile. METHODS: This prospective, single-blinded, randomized trial included 57 patients undergoing elective open thyroidectomy at a tert

OBJECTIVE: To propose a better statistical method of predicting postsurgery soft tissue response in Class II patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects comprise 80 patients who had undergone surgical correction of severe Class II malocclusions. Using 228 predictor and 64 soft tissue response variables, we applied two multivariate methods of forming prediction equations, the conventional ordinary least squares (OLS) method and the partial least squares (PLS) method. After fitting the equation,
The association between the choice of general anesthetic agents and the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) and long-term renal dysfunction after nephrectomy has not yet been evaluated. We reviewed 1087 cases of partial or radical nephrectomy. The incidence of postoperative AKI, new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) and CKD upstaging were compared between general anesthetic agent groups (propofol, sevoflurane, and desflurane). Four different propensity score analyses were performed to minimize co
Basal infusion of fentanyl-based IV-PCA was significantly associated with an increase in fentanyl consumption and the occurrence of opioid-related side effects in postsurgical patients.
