Among the subsets of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), activated cytotoxic T lymphocytes (granzyme B+) have an antitumor effect, while regulatory T lymphocytes [forkhead box P3 (Foxp3)+] suppress the antitumor immune response. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible associations between TIL subsets and survival outcomes in patients with left-sided pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). From January 2000 to December 2008, 30 patients who underwent

SJR Q1Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic SciencesOA

BACKGROUND: The present study investigates the clinical impact of Braun anastomosis on delayed gastric emptying (DGE) after pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD). METHODS: From February 2013 to June 2014, 60 patients were recruited for this randomized controlled trial. The incidence of DGE and its risk factors were analyzed according to whether or not Braun anastomosis was used after PPPD. RESULTS: Thirty patients were respectively enrolled in No-Braun group and Braun group. A compar

SJR Q1Surgical EndoscopyOA

BACKGROUND: We evaluated vascular patency and potential changes in preserved spleens after laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (SPDP) with conservation of both splenic vessels. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the patency of conserved splenic vessels in patients who underwent laparoscopic or robotic splenic vessel-conserving SPDP from January 2006 to August 2010. The patency of the conserved splenic vessels was evaluated by abdominal computed tomography and classified into t

Serous cyst adenoma of the pancreas: appraisal of active surgical strategy before it causes problems
Ho Kyoung Hwang, Hyunki Kim, Chang Moo Kang, Woo Jung Lee
SJR Q1Surgical EndoscopyOA

BACKGROUND: Patients who are diagnosed with symptomatic or ambiguous serous cyst adenoma (SCA) need surgery. The purpose of this study is to suggest a potential management plan based on analysis of surgically treated SCAs. METHODS: Between August 1995 and December 2010, 38 patients with SCA were surgically treated. Data were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Among 38 patients, 28 were female and ten were male. Mean age was 49.6 ± 14.1 years, and five patients (13.2%) were older than 65 years. A

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether splenectomy influences the tumor growth and metastatic pattern in an orthotopic syngeneic murine pancreatic cancer model. Murine pancreatic cancer cells (PAN02) were subcutaneously injected into the flanks of nude mice. A small tumor fragment (3 mm2), harvested from a subcutaneous tumor. was orthotopically implanted in the tail of the pancreas of C57/BL6 mice without splenectomy (control group, n=15) or with simultaneous splenectomy

Adverse Oncologic Impact of New-Onset Diabetes Mellitus on Recurrence in Resected Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma
Seung‐Ho Lee, Ho Kyoung Hwang, Chang Moo Kang, Woo Jung Lee
SJR Q2PancreasOA

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is prevalent with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Importantly, new-onset DM is characteristic of the disease and could be an early sign of PDAC. The clinical outcome of PDAC with new-onset DM may differ from that in patients without DM or long-standing DM. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of PDAC patients who underwent curative resection between 2006 and 2014. New-onset DM was defined as a diagnosis of DM within 24 months before the

Quality of Recovery of Patients Who Underwent Curative Pancreatectomy: Comparison of Total Intravenous Anesthesia Versus Inhalation Anesthesia Using the QOR‐40 Questionnaire

SJR Q1World Journal of SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing attention on the subjective recovery of patients undergoing cancer surgery. Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and inhaled anesthesia with volatile anesthetics (INHA) are safe and common anesthetic techniques. Currently, TIVA and INHA have only been compared for less invasive and less complex surgeries. This prospective randomized trial aimed to compare the quality of recovery between TIVA and INHA in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) or distal

BACKGROUND: Transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA) is performed for adenoma or early cancer of the ampulla of Vater (AoV). This study aimed to analyze the short- and long-term outcomes of TDA (TDA group) when compared with conventional pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) or pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD group). METHODS: Patients who underwent TDA between January 2006 and December 2019, and PD cases performed for AoV malignancy with carcinoma in-situ (Tis) (high-grade dysplasia, HGD) and T1 a

Purpose: Accurate indications and the extent of surgery for branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas are still debatable. In particular, small tumor is located at the head portion of pancreas presents a dilemma. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of enucleation (EN) with that of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in patients with small (2 cm<size<3 cm) branch duct IPMN located at the head of pancreas or uncinate process. Tumor-Specific miRNA Signatures in Combination with CA19-9 for Liquid Biopsy-Based Detection of PDAC

SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is considered one of the most aggressive malignancies and has high mortality and poor survival rates. Therefore, there is an urgent need to discover non-invasive biomarkers for early detection before PDAC reaches the incurable stage. We hypothesized that liquid biopsy of PDAC-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEs) containing abundant microRNAs (miRNAs) could be used for early diagnosis of PDAC because they can be selectively enriched and because they are bi
