SJR Q1Antimicrobial Agents and ChemotherapyOA

Recently, several plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes conferring low levels of quinolone resistance have been discovered. To evaluate the temporal change in the prevalence of PMQR genes over a decade in a tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea, we selected every fifth isolate of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and every third isolate of Enterobacter cloacae between 1998 and 2001 and between 2005 and 2006 from a collection of blood isolates. Six PMQR genes [qnrA, qnr

oqxAB Encoding a Multidrug Efflux Pump in Human Clinical Isolates of Enterobacteriaceae
Hong Bin Kim, Minghua Wang, Chi Hye Park, Eui-Chong Kim, George A. Jacoby, David C. Hooper
SJR Q1Antimicrobial Agents and ChemotherapyOA

The genes for multidrug efflux pump OqxAB, which is active on fluoroquinolones, were found in human clinical isolates on a plasmid in Escherichia coli and on the chromosome of Klebsiella pneumoniae. IS26-like sequences flanked the plasmid-mediated oqxAB genes, suggesting that they had been mobilized as part of a composite transposon.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was introduced in Korea early with a large outbreak in mid-February. We reviewed the public health interventions used during the COVID-19 outbreak and describe the impact on seasonal influenza activity in Korea. METHODS: National response strategies, public health interventions and daily COVID-19-confirmed cases in Korea were reviewed during the pandemic. National influenza surveillance data were compared between 7 sequential seasons. Characteristi

In Vitro Activities of 28 Antimicrobial Agents against Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Tertiary-Care Hospitals in Korea: a Nationwide Survey

Staphylococcus aureus, one of the most frequently isolated pathogens in both hospitals and the community, has been particularly efficient at developing resistance to antimicrobial agents. As methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has prevailed and, furthermore, as S. aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin has emerged, the therapeutic options for the treatment of S. aureus infections have become limited. To update the current status of antibiotic resistance, clinical S. aureus isolates

SJR Q1Spine

Previous invasive spinal procedures, preceding bacteremia, fever, higher white blood cell counts, C-reactive protein, ALP, and higher fraction of neutrophils are suggestive of PS. Concurrent active tuberculosis, more indolent course and involvement of thoracic spines are suggestive of TS. When the causative organism is not identified despite all efforts at diagnosis, combination of the clinical, radiologic, and laboratory characteristics of the patient is helpful.

Ciprofloxacin was introduced for treatment of patients with cholera in Bangladesh because of resistance to other agents, but its utility has been compromised by the decreasing ciprofloxacin susceptibility of Vibrio cholerae over time. We correlated levels of susceptibility and temporal patterns with the occurrence of mutation in gyrA, which encodes a subunit of DNA gyrase, followed by mutation in parC, which encodes a subunit of DNA topoisomerase IV. We found that ciprofloxacin activity was more

Outcome of inappropriate initial antimicrobial treatment in patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia

SJR Q1Journal of Antimicrobial ChemotherapyOA

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of delayed treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (MRSA bacteraemia) on mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used two different and complementary approaches: a retrospective cohort study and a matched case-control study. Of the total of all patients with S. aureus bacteraemia in a tertiary hospital over a 4 year period, 127 patients with MRSA bacteraemia were enrolled in the cohort study. The cases for the case-control study were de

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) is common and often leads to unnecessary antimicrobial use. Reducing antibiotic overuse for ABU is therefore an important issue for antimicrobial stewardship. We performed this study to investigate the appropriateness of ABU management and to evaluate physicians' knowledge and practice regarding ABU. METHODS: We reviewed all urine cultures of ≥10(5) cfu/mL of bacteria among inpatients in a 900-bed hospital in 2011. Each episode of bacteriuria was classi

This review examines the escalating issue of plastic pollution, specifically highlighting the detrimental effects on the environment and human health caused by microplastics and nanoplastics. The extensive use of synthetic polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS) has raised significant environmental concerns because of their long-lasting and non-degradable characteristics. This review delves into the role of enzymatic and microbial strategies in
