15BACKGROUND AND AIM: Our study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic results of endoscopic N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate injection (EBC) and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) in patients with gastric variceal hemorrhage (GVH) and/or high-risk gastric varices (GV). METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with GVH and/or high-risk GV (>or= 5 mm in diameter, those with red spots, and a Child-Pugh grading of B or C liver cirrhosis) who were treated with either EBC or BRTO from April 2005 to De
BACKGROUND: We aimed to explore the predictive ability of preoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels for assessing tumor resectability (R0 resection) in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS: The present study included 72 patients who had been treated surgically for potentially resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma and 42 patients who had been treated surgically for palliation (bypass surgery) at our institution. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Although previous investigators have observed that knowledge of performance via visual feedback tends to enhance performance during an isokinetic test, the time frame over which visual feedback remains advantageous is unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare knee extensor torques produced by visual feedback and no visual feedback groups on three occasions, completed over a 2-week period, and at 4 weeks after the third test. Healthy, sedentary subjects were each randomly assigned to eith
BACKGROUND: The initial 6-month data for MUSE™ (Medigus, Omer, Israel) endoscopic stapling device were reported (Zacherl et al. in Surg Endosc 29:220-229, 2015). The current study aims to evaluate the long-term clinical outcome of 37 patients who received endoscopic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) treatment with the MUSE™ device. METHODS: Efficacy and safety data for 37 patients were analyzed at baseline, 6 months, and 4 years post-procedure. In one center (IU), efficacy and safety data w
Risk factors for complications and pancreatic fistulae after left pancreatectomy differ when open versus laparoscopic techniques are employed. Preoperative characteristics may identify cohorts of patients who will benefit more from LLP, and no patient cohorts had higher postoperative complication rates after LLP than OLP. These observations suggest that LLP may be the operative procedure of choice for most patients with left-sided pancreatic lesions; a more definitive prospective and randomized
BACKGROUND AND AIM: There have been no reports comparing the therapeutic results of adefovir (ADV) and entecavir (ETV) rescue therapy for patients with lamivudine (LAM)-resistant chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We aimed to compare the cumulative efficacy and resistance of ETV 1.0 mg monotherapy, ADV monotherapy and ADV add-on LAM combination therapy in LAM-refractory patients. METHODS: One hundred and four patients were included in the following three treatment groups; group 1 (n = 24), LAM was switc
BACKGROUND: In previous studies, increasing body mass index (BMI, kg/m(2)) was related to chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, such as frequent vomiting, upper abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea. However, there have been no reports about the relationship between increasing BMI and abnormal upper endoscopic findings such as gastritis or ulcer. METHODS: The study group consisted of 27 319 individuals who underwent medical checkup at a healthcare center from 1 January to 31 December 2003. The foll
INTRODUCTION: The impact of glycemic status and insulin resistance on the risk of pancreatic cancer in the nondiabetic population remains uncertain. We aimed to examine the association of glycemic status and insulin resistance with pancreatic cancer mortality in individuals with and without diabetes. METHODS: This is a cohort study of 572,021 Korean adults without cancer at baseline, who participated in repeat screening examinations which included fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and insul
BACKGROUND AND AIM: There have been no trials comparing the prophylactic effect of oral quinolone and intravenous cephalosporin antibiotics and elucidating the predictive factors for the occurrence of bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients with gastrointestinal bleeding in Asian-Pacific region. METHODS: One hundred and thirteen patients with advanced liver cirrhosis and active gastrointestinal hemorrhage were enrolled in our study. The patients were randomly allocated into either the oral ci
BACKGROUND & AIMS: The current study analysed the association between radiologic tumour response and survival times of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who were treated with transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization (TACE). METHODS: Among 493 consecutive patients presenting to our institution between July 2002 and June 2010 with radiologically (n = 398) or histologically (n = 95) confirmed HCC, 368 patients who met inclusion criteria, underwent TACE and had confirmed survival
BACKGROUND/AIMS: There has been no report concerning the predictive capability of each scoring system in determining the development of complications of liver cirrhosis such as variceal bleeding and/or hepatic encephalopathy. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 128 patients with liver cirrhosis [92 males; mean (standard deviation) 54.2 (11.2) years] admitted to our institution from March 2004 to April 2006. Seventy-three patients (57.0%, group 1) were admitted because of complications of cirrhos
