In this paper, I focus on Milton's resistance to choosing a credible employment in a letter to an unknown friend and in Lycidas. Composed in 1633 and 1637 respectively, these two pieces of writing reveal Milton's assessment of himself at the beginning and end of his years of study at Hammersmith and at Horton. Is there a perceptible change in his sense of vocation? What remains unchanged? What, in his mind, was his vocation? Was it, as is still popularly known, a career as a poet?

My aim in this paper is to approach Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella through the now largely ignored art of rhetoric and thus recuperate some of the lost implications of frequently anthologized poems like Sonnet 1. In the sonnet sequence I detect a struggle between Sidney’s desire to preserve an ideal (in the form of Stella) and a competing desire to communicate that earlier desire through a medium of communication that makes preservation of that ideal impossible. In this paper, I am interested in tracing the roots of William Hunter's dissatisfaction with Milton's Christian Doctrine. Following a couple of local skirmishes with Hunter on the issue of free will and mortalism, I move on to Hunter's emphasis on the Holy Spirit as the invoked, despite the Christian Doctrine's prohibitive assertions against invoking the Spirit. I point out that Hunter's concern with the Holy Spirit is part of a long crusade, on the part of Hunter, to cleanse Milton of the taint
