15AIM: Sharing clinical information across care settings is a cornerstone to providing quality care to older people with complex conditions. The purpose of the present study was to examine the reliability of the interRAI Long Term Care Facilities (interRAI LTCF) and the interRAI Home Care (interRAI HC), comprehensive and integrated assessment instruments with common core items, in Korea, an Asian county where comprehensive geriatric assessment is not widely used in long-term care. METHODS: The Kor
South Korea proactively introduced public long-term care insurance (LTCI) in 2008 when older people were only about one-tenth of the total population. At that time, Korea switched from a tax-based, local-government-operated LTC program targeting low-income older people to the current universal public LTCI run by the National Health Insurance Service, the single public insurer. The LTCI program provides a comprehensive package of home- and institution-based care mainly targeting older people who
OBJECTIVES: To describe rates of scheduled and unscheduled readmissions among midlife and older patients with diabetes and to examine associated socioeconomic and clinical factors. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based data set study. METHODS: Using the 2006 California State Inpatient Dataset, we identified 124,967 patients 50 years or older with diabetes who were discharged from acute care hospitals between April and September 2006 and examined readmissions in the 3 months following their index hospit
PURPOSE: To test the relationship between nurses' perceptions of the geriatric nurse practice environment (GNPE) and perceptions of geriatric-care delivery, and geriatric nursing knowledge. DESIGN: A secondary analysis of data collected by the New York University Hartford Institute Benchmarking Service staff using a retrospective, cross-sectional, design. METHODS: Responses of 9,802 direct-care registered nurses from 75 acute-care hospitals in the US that administered the GIAP (Geriatric Institu
Little is known about health and social care provision for people with long-term care (LTC) needs under multiple insurances. The aim of this study is to compare the profile, case-mix, and service provision to older people at long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) covered by the national health insurance (NHI) with those of older people at long-term care facilities (LTCFs) covered by the public long-term care insurance (LTCI) in Korea. A national LTC survey using common functional measures and a case-m

The relationships between general and geriatric-specific nursing practice environments (NPEs) and nurse-perceived quality of geriatric care in hospitals were examined using the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystems Elders benchmarking database. The overall general NPE was negatively related, but the overall geriatric-specific NPE was positively related to quality of geriatric care. Among five subdomains of the general NPE measured by the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, Nu
OBJECTIVES: To examine patient, hospital and market factors and outcomes associated with readmission to a different hospital compared with the same hospital. DESIGN: A population-based, secondary analysis using multilevel causal modeling. SETTING: Acute care hospitals in California in the USA. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 509 775 patients aged 50 or older who were discharged alive from acute care hospitals (index hospitalizations), and 59 566 who had a rehospitalization within 30 days following their
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an information and communication technologies (ICT)-enhanced, multidisciplinary integrated care model, called Systems for Person-centered Elder Care (SPEC), on frail older adults at nursing homes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: SPEC was implemented at 10 nursing homes in South Korea in random order using a stepped-wedge design. Data were collected on all participating older residents in the homes before the first
OBJECTIVES: To examine prevalence of and factors associated with different types of potentially preventable hospitalizations (PPHs) among older adults with diabetes. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based secondary analysis. METHODS: We analyzed the California State Inpatient Databases, 2005 to 2006. PPHs for 3 acute and 5 chronic ambulatory care–sensitive conditions relevant for older adults were defined by applying the Prevention Quality Indicator algorithm developed by the Agency for Health Research
AIM: To analyze differences in multimorbidity rates and associated factors between urban and rural regions of Korea and China. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Gateway to Global Aging Datasets. We describe multimorbidity patterns across rural and urban settings in each of the countries. Multivariate regression was used to identify factors associated with multimorbidity in each of the countries by region. RESULTS: In China, 31% of the sample had multimorbidity, with significantly higher proporti
The GCES is a reliable measure of RN perception of how care provided to older adults reflects age-sensitive principles and the organizational practice environment that supports or hinders care delivery.
Self-reported depressive symptoms and self-reported CMI are prevalent among older adults in South Korea, often occurring together and possibly increasing health care utilization. These findings imply a need for chronic disease management targeting older people with complex mental and medical conditions and evaluation of its effects on health outcomes and service use.
