Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising tool for improving poststroke cognitive function. Home-based rehabilitation is increasingly required for patients with stroke, and additional benefits are expected if supplemented with remotely supervised tDCS (RS-tDCS). We evaluated the cognitive improvement effect and feasibility of RS-tDCS in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Twenty-six patients with chronic stroke and cognitive impairment (Korean version of the Mo

Though clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) are an effective and widely used treatment method worldwide, they are as yet not widely accepted in Korea. Given that cardiovascular (CV) disease is the second leading cause of death in Korea, it is urgent that CR programs be developed. In 2008, the Government of Korea implemented CR programs at 11 university hospitals as part of its Regional Cardio-Cerebrovascular Center Project, and 3 additional medical facilities will

SJR Q2Journal of Burn Care & Research

This study aimed to evaluate pulmonary function measurements and respiratory muscle parameters in patients with major burn injury and smoke inhalation. The inclusion criteria included patients who were diagnosed with a smoke inhalation burn or a major burn of more than 20% of total body surface area (TBSA). All subjects underwent a pulmonary function test, respiratory muscle strength test, peak cough flow and fluoroscopic diaphragmatic movement measurement, and 6-minute walk test before starting

SJR Q1American Journal of Physical Medicine & RehabilitationOA

OBJECTIVE: This study compared transcutaneous carbon dioxide partial pressure (PtcCO2) and end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (PetCO2) monitoring during sleep for patients with neuromuscular disease. DESIGN: This is a retrospective study of patients whose PtcCO2 and PetCO2 were monitored before they began using noninvasive mechanical ventilation. The outcomes were divided into four groupings: group 1, both PtcCO2 and PetCO2 are greater than or equal to 49 mm Hg; group 2, PtcCO2 is greater

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by damage of motor neurons. Recent reports indicate that inflammatory responses occurring within the central nervous system contribute to the pathogenesis of ALS. We aimed to investigate disease-specific gene expression associated with neuroinflammation by conducting transcriptome analysis on fibroblasts from three patients with sporadic ALS and three normal controls. Several pathways were found to be u

We performed pulmonary function (PF) tests and factors affecting PF evaluation in 120 patients with inhalation injury to evaluate the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in burn patients with inhalation injury. Patients were randomized into pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) group and conventional rehabilitation (CON) group. SJR Q1Muscle & NerveOA

INTRODUCTION: A change in vital capacity (VC) from standing to supine can be an index of diaphragm paralysis if it exceeds 25%. We aimed to verify whether the postural VC difference increases with age and reflects diaphragm weakness in DMD. METHODS: VCs were measured in DMD. Postural VC difference and percentage were calculated from the VC data. Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and MIP percentage were measured as an indirect index of diaphragm weakness. RESULTS: A total of 220 patients and 544

We report a 56-year-old Korean woman with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), showing multiple scarring bullae and hypertrichosis on sun-exposed areas of skin with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sclerodermoid changes were also found on both hands, the face and neck. The patient had suffered from CREST syndrome, manifesting with Raynaud's phenomenon and sclerodactyly, for more than 15 years. Anticentromere antibody was positive. She had presented with splenomegaly 3 years before the development o

ABSTRACT: Even healthy individuals often encounter leg venous symptoms such as heaviness, pain, and swelling especially after prolonged standing work. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a widely used simple therapy for preventing deep vein thrombosis and for treating lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency. However, IPC has not been evaluated for its effect in relieving venous symptoms of healthy people. This was single center, cross-over study to investigate the effect of IPC for 20

Yu Hui Won, Yoon Soo Cho, Dong Hyun Kim, So Young Joo, Cheong Hoon Seo
SJR Q2Journal of Burn Care & Research

This report is to evaluate the relation between pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and skeletal muscle index (SMI) in patients with major burn injury and smoke inhalation. A total of 54 inhalation burn patients were analyzed. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) is a sum of the muscle mass of both arms and legs. SMI is adjusting for body size using body mass index (ASM/BMI). Spirometry was performed to evaluate pulmonary function. Pulmonary function tests included peak cough flo
