SJR Q1Human RelationsOA

How do authoritarian leaders in modern organizations influence work team emotional climate and performance? Defining authoritarian leadership as an ambient, demanding, and controlling leadership style, we conducted a survey study of 252 leaders and 765 subordinates matched in 227 work teams in three large public Japanese organizations. The results indicate that authoritarian leaders are more likely to create a team climate of emotion suppression, which induces a higher level of team emotional ex

How do leaders react when treated unfairly? Leader narcissism and self-interested behavior in response to unfair treatment.

SJR Q1Journal of Applied PsychologyOA

In this article we employ a trait activation framework to examine how unfairness perceptions influence narcissistic leaders' self-interested behavior, and the downstream implications of these effects for employees' pro-social and voice behaviors. Specifically, we propose that narcissistic leaders are particularly likely to engage in self-interested behavior when they perceive that their organizations treat them unfairly, and that this self-interested behavior in turn decreases followers' pro-soc

“Fully recharged” evenings? The effect of evening cyber leisure on next-day vitality and performance through sleep quantity and quality, bedtime procrastination, and psychological detachment, and the moderating role of mindfulness.
Haiyang Liu, Yueting Ji, Scott B. Dust
SJR Q1Journal of Applied PsychologyOA

Aligning with the recovery perspective, we propose a dual-path model to illustrate the effects of employees' evening cyber leisure on next-day work outcomes, namely, psychological vitality and performance. We argue that evening cyber leisure has contradicting effects on next-day performance and vitality through its effects on bedtime procrastination and psychological detachment, and in turn, sleep quantity and sleep quality. We also propose that trait mindfulness acts as an important boundary co

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of post-traumatic growth (PTG) and identify its influencing factors in discharged COVID-19 patients. PTG refers to individual experiences of significant positive change arising from the struggle with a major life crisis. This descriptive cross-sectional study used the convenient sampling method to recruit 140 discharged COVID-19 patients in Hunan, China. The results show that the PTG of the discharged COVID-19 patients was positively

Leader–follower risk orientation incongruence, intellectual stimulation, and creativity: A configurational approach

SJR Q1Personnel PsychologyOA

Abstract Prior work suggests that follower and leader risk orientation is positively associated with follower creativity. We suggest that this view is oversimplified and propose that follower creativity can be stimulated when leader and follower have diverging risk orientations. We, therefore, apply a configurational approach to creativity, evaluating varying combinations of leader and follower risk orientation on follower creativity. Across two field studies, we demonstrate that (a) follower cr

SJR Q1Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies

Based on a resource perspective, the authors investigated how leader–follower power distance value incongruence influences employees’ withdrawal behavior. Data were collected twice in China, and the sample included 66 leaders and 350 followers. Leader–follower power distance value incongruence was found to be associated with the psychological workplace strain experienced by followers, indicating that incongruence was a stressor for this group and further influenced their withdrawal behavior. When self‐love is threatened: Adopting a dual‐type view to understand leader narcissism and its impacts on LMX and newcomer work outcomes

SJR Q1Personnel Psychology

Abstract The extant literature has revealed that leader narcissism has paradoxical impacts on follower outcomes. In this research, we argue that its paradoxical effects can be disentangled by the presence of two distinct types of leader narcissism—narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry—which can shape leaders’ initial relationship‐building with new followers (i.e., newcomers) differently. Integrating a dual‐type view of narcissism with leader–member exchange (LMX) theory and conducting

Are narcissists more creative? Only if we believe it: How narcissism can relate to creativity

SJR Q2Frontiers in PsychologyOA

The relationship between narcissism and creativity has inspired interesting debates for decades. Drawing on a new perspective, the current study tried to explain how narcissism influences others' creativity evaluation in the organizational context. Based on the theory of impression management, we suggested that narcissism and creativity may have a more complex relationship rather than a simple linear link. To test this relationship, we conducted a survey of 596 subordinates and 60 leaders in thr

Weight Bias 2.0: The Effect of Perceived Weight Change on Performance Evaluation and the Moderating Role of Anti-fat Bias

SJR Q2Frontiers in PsychologyOA

Overweight employees are viewed as lazy, slow, inactive, and even incapable. Even if such attributes are false, this perspective can seriously undermine others' evaluation of their work performance. The current study explores a broader phenomenon of weight bias that has an effect on weight change. In a longitudinal study with a time lag of 6 months, we surveyed 226 supervisor-employee dyads. We found supervisor perceptions of employee weight change notably altered their evaluation of the employe

Selfless Leader and Their Selfless Follower: The Trickle-Down Effect of Leader Perceived Fairness
Haiyang Liu, Jack Ting‐Ju Chiang, Minya Xu
Academy of Management Proceedings

Based on equity theory (Adam, 1965), we proposed a fairness trickle- down model to explain how leaders’ perceived fairness may impact their followers’ prosocial motivation. A time-lagged study from 82 group leaders and 906 subordinates in Mainland China supported our trickle-down model. First, our results indicate that leader perceived fairness had an indirect, positive effect on subordinate prosocial motivation through its negative impact on leader self-interested behavior. Second, both leader

The Unbalanced Physical Movements of International Trade

Munich Personal RePEc Archive (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)OA

The goods produced in developed nations are often of higher quality, advanced technology and better design, hence goods even with little physical mass have higher value than goods produced in developing nations. This means that if the payment is balanced between developed and developing nations, the physical mass must be unbalanced. As a result, developed nations will become increasingly heavier, and the northern hemisphere where developed nations are clustered will also become more and more hea
