Classification of acute myeloid leukemia
Sang Mee Hwang
SJR Q2Blood ResearchOA

The World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues was revised in 2017 on the basis of recent high-throughput sequencing and gene expression data on hematologic malignancies. This review explores the current WHO classification of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and related precursor neoplasms, highlighting the changes made in the current edition and focusing on the diagnosis of AML.

tuf Gene Sequence Analysis Has Greater Discriminatory Power than 16S rRNA Sequence Analysis in Identification of Clinical Isolates of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci
Sang Mee Hwang, Myoung Shin Kim, Kyoung Un Park, Junghan Song, Eui-Chong Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MicrobiologyOA

We compared and analyzed 16S rRNA and tuf gene sequences for 97 clinical isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) by use of the GenBank, MicroSeq, EzTaxon, and BIBI databases. Discordant results for definitive identification were observed and differed according to the different databases and target genes. Although higher percentages of sequence identity were obtained with GenBank and MicroSeq for 16S rRNA analysis, the BIBI and EzTaxon databases produced less ambiguous results. Greater

SJR Q1Journal of Hematology & OncologyOA

BACKGROUND: Telomere erosion can lead to genomic instability and cancer progression. It has been suggested that the shortest telomere, not the average telomere length (TL), is critical for cell viability. Some studies have shown shorter TL in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients but the critically short telomeres, the variability of TL within individual patient has not been evaluated. Thus, we aimed to investigate the TL of MDS patients and assessed the association of TL with recurrent geneti

SJR Q2DiagnosticsOA

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) outbreaks in hospital settings challenge the treatment of patients and infection control. Understanding the relatedness of clinical isolates is important in distinguishing outbreak isolates from sporadic cases. This study investigated 11 CRAB isolates from a hospital outbreak by whole-genome sequencing (WGS), utilizing various bioinformatics tools for outbreak analysis. The results of multilocus sequence typing (MLST), single nucleotide polymor

The application of an in situ karyotyping technique for mesenchymal stromal cells: a validation and comparison study with classical G-banding

SJR Q1Experimental & Molecular MedicineOA

The cytogenetic analysis of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is essential for verifying the safety and stability of MSCs. An in situ technique, which uses cells grown on coverslips for karyotyping and minimizes cell manipulation, is the standard protocol for the chromosome analysis of amniotic fluids. Therefore, we applied the in situ karyotyping technique in MSCs and compared the quality of metaphases and karyotyping results with classical G-banding and chromosomal abnormalities with fluorescen

CD109 gene encodes a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked glycoprotein found in a subset of platelets and endothelial cell, and human platelet antigen (HPA) 15 is found on CD109. We evaluated the HPA genotype and/or the CD109 mRNA expression on two peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC), two peripheral bloods (PB), 12 granulocyte products, natural killer (NK)-92, B-lymphocyte (CO88BV59-1), K-562 leukemia cell line, human embryonic stem cell (hESC), and human fibroblasts (HF). SJR Q1Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM)OA

BACKGROUND: Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody is emerging as an important diagnostic marker for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We evaluated the analytical and diagnostic performance of the ARCHITECT anti-CCP (Abbott Diagnostics), a new fully automated chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. METHODS: Serum samples from 69 patients with RA and 86 non-RA patients were used to evaluate the performance of the ARCHITECT anti-CCP assay, and the results were compared with those of EliA CC

Thrombomodulin phenotype of a distinct monocyte subtype is an independent prognostic marker for disseminated intravascular coagulation
Sang Mee Hwang, Ji-Eun Kim, Kyou Sup Han, Hyun Kyung Kim
SJR Q1Critical CareOA

INTRODUCTION: Thrombomodulin, which is expressed solely on monocytes, along with tissue factor (TF), takes part in coagulation and inflammation. Circulating blood monocytes can be divided into 3 major subtypes on the basis of their receptor phenotype: classical (CD14brightCD16negative, CMs), inflammatory (CD14brightCD16positive; IMs), and dendritic cell-like (CD14dimCD16positive DMs). Monocyte subtype is strongly regulated, and the balance may influence the clinical outcomes of disseminated intr

Complete blood count and cell population data parameters from the Abbott Alinity hq analyzer are useful in differentiating myelodysplastic syndromes from other forms of cytopenia
Sang Mee Hwang, Youngwon Nam
SJR Q2International Journal of Laboratory Hematology

INTRODUCTION: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are characterized by morphologic dysplasia and cytopenia and have a propensity for acute leukemic transformation. However, dysplasia is diagnosed by morphology, thus having cell population data (CPD) that can differentiate cytopenic patients with MDS from other conditions may facilitate accurate diagnosis. We assessed the utility of complete blood count (CBC) parameters and CPD derived from an Abbott Alinity hq analyzer to discriminate MDS-related cy
