Cytological examination of urine is the most widely used noninvasive pathologic screen for bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA); however, inadequate diagnostic accuracy remains a major challenge. We performed mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of urine samples of ten patients with BLCA and ten paired patients with benign urothelial lesion (BUL) to identify ancillary proteomic markers for use in liquid-based cytology (LBC). A total of 4,839 proteins were identified and 112 proteins were co

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Classification of headache disorders is dependent on a subjective self-report from patients and its interpretation by physicians. We aimed to apply objective data-driven machine learning approaches to analyze patient-reported symptoms and test the feasibility of the automated classification of headache disorders. The self-report data of 2162 patients were analyzed. Headache disorders were merged into five major entities. The patients were divided into training (n = 1286) and test (n = 876) cohor

Variations in body mass index (BMI) have been suggested to relate to atypical brain organization, yet connectome-level substrates of BMI and their neurobiological underpinnings remain unclear. Studying 325 healthy young adults, we examined associations between functional connectivity and inter-individual BMI variations. We utilized non-linear connectome manifold learning techniques to represent macroscale functional organization along continuous hierarchical axes that dissociate low level and hi

Metabolic dysregulation is an important hallmark of cancer. Nicotinamide (NAM), a water-soluble amide form of niacin (vitamin B3), is currently available as a supplement for maintaining general physiologic functions. NAM is a crucial regulator of mitochondrial metabolism and redox reactions. In this study, we aimed to identify the mechanistic link between NAM-induced metabolic regulation and the therapeutic efficacy of NAM in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The combined analysis using mult

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of the tumor volume reduction rate (TVRR) measured during adaptive definitive radiation therapy (RT) in patients with oropharyngeal cancer. METHODS: We reviewed the RT records of 59 patients with oropharyngeal cancer who were treated with definitive RT with or without concurrent chemotherapy between January 2006 and October 2010. Adaptive replanning was performed in all patients during RT. The pre-RT and mid-RT gro

Muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (MIUC) of the bladder shows highly aggressive tumor behavior, which has prompted the quest for robust biomarkers predicting invasion. To discover such biomarkers, we first employed high-throughput proteomic method and analyzed tissue biopsy cohorts from patients with bladder urothelial carcinoma (BUC), stratifying them according to their pT stage. Candidate biomarkers were selected through bioinformatic analysis, followed by validation. The latter comprised 2

Bladder urothelial carcinoma (BUC) is the most lethal malignancy of the urinary tract. Treatment for the disease highly depends on the invasiveness of cancer cells. Therefore, a predictive biomarker needs to be identified for invasive BUC. In this study, we employed proteomics methods on urine liquid-based cytology (LBC) samples and a BUC cell line library to determine a novel predictive biomarker for invasive BUC. Furthermore, an in vitro three-dimensional (3D) invasion study for biological sig

Functional hierarchy establishes core axes of the brain, and overweight individuals show alterations in the networks anchored on these axes, particularly in those involved in sensory and cognitive control systems. However, quantitative assessments of hierarchical brain organization in overweight individuals are lacking. Capitalizing stepwise functional connectivity analysis, we assess altered functional connectivity in overweight individuals relative to healthy weight controls along the brain hi

Background: The molecular biology of inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) as a precursor disease of urothelial carcinoma is poorly understood. Furthermore, the overlapping histology between IUP and papillary urothelial carcinoma (PUC) with inverted growth is a diagnostic pitfall leading to frequent misdiagnoses. Methods: To identify the oncologic significance of IUP and discover a novel biomarker for its diagnosis, we employed mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of IUP, PUC, and normal uro

Radiation sigmoiditis mimicking sigmoid colon cancer after radiation therapy for cervical cancer: the implications of three-dimensional image-based brachytherapy planning

SJR Q1Journal of Gynecologic OncologyOA

External-beam radiation therapy with intracavitary high-dose-rate brachytherapy is the standard treatment modality for advanced cervical cancer; however, late gastrointestinal complications are a major concern after radiotherapy. While radiation proctitis is a well-known side effect and radiation oncologists make an effort to reduce it, the sigmoid colon is often neglected as an organ at risk. Herein, we report two cases of radiation sigmoiditis mimicking sigmoid colon cancer after external-beam
