15BACKGROUND: Visceral fat, including epicardial fat (EF) is recognized as a responsible factor of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between EF and diabetes in Korean men. METHODS: EF thickness was measured in the left main coronary artery fat tissue (LMCA-fat) by low-dose chest CT scans in 1,048 Korean men (age above 20 years). LMCA-fat values were divided into quartiles and the prevalence of diabetes was analyzed based on the quartiles of LMCA-fat
Purpose: This study was done to describe utilization status of emergency medical service for children at one university affiliated hospital located in Seoul. Data were obtained from the medical records of patients under 13 years of age who visited the ER from January 1 to December 31, 2006. Method: Medical records missing the time of discharge were excluded in the analysis of waiting time, which resulted in 19,766 cases. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 14.0 version. Result: There were slightly
Several lines of evidence indicate that prehypertension is more atherogenic than normal blood pressure. Serum γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is known to be positively associated with prehypertensive status and the progression of hypertension. However, there have been no prospective studies of serum GGT level as a predictor of prehypertension. Apparently 13,435 healthy men (mean age 42.0 ± 6.6 yr) with normal blood pressure were included in a prospective cohort study in 2005 and were followed up to
Unlike younger adults, depression in older adults is sometimes related to chewing problems. This study examined the risk factors related to depression associated with chewing problems in 3747 elderly individuals using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Approximately 41.2% of the total subjects reported chewing problems. There were significant differences in age, education, marital status, individual income, current smoking status, and aerobic physical activity in relati
This study aimed to evaluate the association of ascending aortic diameter (AAD) measured by low-dose chest CT (LDCT) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korean men. AAD was measured with LDCT in 1046 healthy Korean men (mean age 50.7±9.7 years, range 28 to 69 years) participating in medical health check-up in a university health promotion center. AAD was defined as the longest length measured from the left main coronary ostium to the level of the right pulmonary artery in the axial plane in LDCT. The
Rice is a major source of carbohydrates. Resistant starch (RS) is digested in the human small intestine but fermented in the large intestine. This study investigated the effect of consuming heat-treated and powdered brown rice cultivars ‘Dodamssal’ (HBD) and ‘Ilmi’ (HBI), with relatively high and less than 1% RS content, respectively, on the regulation of glucose metabolism in humans. Clinical trial meals were prepared by adding ~80% HBI or HBD powder to HBI and HBD meals, respectively. There wa
Thus, MetS due to 25(OH)D deficiency among postmenopausal women may be modified by the consumption of dietary macronutrient.
Purpose: This study was carried out to identify the characteristics and risk factor of geriatric trauma. Methods:Based on the in-depth Injury Patient Surveillance System data from 2006 to 2008, 11,514 geriatric patients were identified from the system data of 67,688 patients. The New Injury Severity Score [NISS] was used to analyse parametric factors. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: NISS of elderly people between the ages of 65 and 74 was lower than that of people 75 and
In this study, we examined whether metabolic syndrome (MetS)-related variables are simultaneously affected by sleep quality, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dietary consumption. In this cross-sectional study, data for 307 premenopausal women were available. The results showed that women experiencing PMS had significantly lower sleep quality and were more depressed and anxious (p < 0.001 for all). After the subjects were divided into groups according to PMS, the effect of sleep quality on MetS
BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern, particularly in the elderly population. Absolute handgrip strength (HGS) serves to quantify muscle strength. It is recommended that the risk of low muscle strength and increased body mass index be concurrently evaluated using relative HGS. There are currently insufficient evidence regarding the relationship between relative HGS and DM in the elderly Korean population. Therefore, the association between relative HGS and th
To assess whether a healthy diet could change the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related chewing difficulty (CD) in relation to age distribution. In a cross-sectional study of 9411 middle-aged Koreans from the KNHANES VII. In this study, the Framingham 10-year general CVD risk prediction equations and the Korean Heathy Eating index (KHEI) were used to assess the 10-year estimated risk of CVD and dietary quality, respectively. CD was experienced by 16.7% of the total subjects. Among subject
Large-scale studies elucidating sex differences in factors impacting prognosis and sex-specific prognossis factors scoring in patients with lung cancer are insufficient. The present study aimed to develop a model to predict sex-specific prognosis factors in Korean patients with lung cancer. This nationwide cohort study included 96,255 patients aged ≥19 years diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent Korean National Health Insurance Service health examinations between January 1, 2005 and December
The global and Korean obesity rates are increasing, leading to heightened risks of cardiovascular diseases. Abdominal obesity, in particular, is strongly associated with cardiovascular risks and metabolic syndrome. Although surgical options are available, non-invasive body contouring devices offer lower-risk alternatives. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness in managing abdominal obesity in Koreans is limited. This study evaluates the impact of these techniques on reducing abdominal c
Telomere length is a known indicator of biological aging, typically decreasing with age. Biological age is a benchmark for assessing an individual's health and aging. Correlations between telomere length and lifestyle factors have primarily been investigated from the perspective of a single variable and predominantly examined in postmenopausal women in Korea. This study aimed to analyze the effects of multiple lifestyle factors on telomere length in a diverse Korean population comprising 368 hea
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigated nutritional status and estimated the adequacy of dietary intake of university students during shipboard internships. METHODS: In this cross- sectional study, data were collected from 25 students out of 42 participants who attended in the research information session in the department of maritime at a university located in Jeonbook, South Korea. The dietary intake data was obtained using the 12-day dietary recall through smartphone photography during t
