15The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has recently been reported to predict the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We explored whether NLR predicted the survival of patients with HCC undergoing transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and developed a predictive model. In total, 1697 patients with HCC undergoing TACE as first-line therapy at two university hospitals were enrolled (derivation set n = 921, internal validation set n = 395, external validation set n = 381). The tumor size
BACKGROUND: Therapeutic options for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have increased since the introduction of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors a few decades ago. However, direct comparisons of the effectiveness of second-line biological agents in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are lacking. METHODS: Patients with UC or CD who experienced anti-TNF treatment failure and subsequently used vedolizumab, ustekinumab, or tofacitinib as a second-line drug were retro
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic immune-mediated intestinal inflammation, presenting with a spectrum of metabolic disorders as well as intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. Lifestyle factors, genetic predisposition, immune dysfunction, and gut bacteria composition contribute to the development of IBD. Several comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases, thrombosis, and metabolic disorders, have been associated with IBD. Therefore, metabolic disorders, in
Hepatic steatosis was independently associated with increased risks of clinical relapse in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, whereas fibrotic burden in the liver was not. Future studies should investigate whether assessment and therapeutic intervention for NAFLD will improve the clinical outcomes of patients with IBD.
Background/Aims: Many patients with Crohn's disease (CD) undergo intestinal resection during the disease course. Despite surgery, postoperative recurrence (POR) commonly occurs. Although postoperative use of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) inhibitors is known to be effective in preventing POR, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of continuing the same TNF-α inhibitors postoperatively in patients who received TNF-ɑ inhibitors before surgery. Methods: This retrospective observational stud
INTRODUCTION: Although sigmoid volvulus is a potentially life-threatening condition in elderly patients, its prognostic factors are not well-known. This study aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes and identify prognostic factors in patients with sigmoid volvulus. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 96 patients diagnosed with sigmoid volvulus by abdominal CT between January 2005 and January 2023 at two tertiary referral centers. After patients who underwent emergent surgery, refused e
BACKGROUND: Whether the progression of precursor lesions or the occurrence of cancer is influenced by lifestyle factors in carriers of genetic mutations has not been fully investigated, especially in Asian patients of hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) syndrome. METHODS: Patients at a high risk of hereditary CRC were included. For polyposis CRC syndromes, colorectal polyp burden was measured using at least 60 images per colonoscopy in each patient and classified into five stages using the Intern
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The optimal tools for monitoring Crohn's disease (CD) are controversial. We compared radiology plus ileocolonoscopy and radiology alone in terms of prognosis prediction and evaluated the agreement between radiologic and ileocolonoscopic findings in patients with CD. METHODS: Patients with CD who were followed up with computed tomography enterography (CTE) or magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) alone or CTE or MRE plus ileocolonoscopy were retrospectively recruited. Time to rel
INTRODUCTION: The association between postpolypectomy bleeding (PPB) and thrombocytopenia remains unclear, and current evidence is insufficient to provide definitive guidelines for managing patients with thrombocytopenia undergoing endoscopic procedures. We assessed the association between thrombocytopenia and PPB to identify the minimum platelet count threshold for safe colonoscopic polypectomy. METHODS: This large cohort study included patients who had undergone colonoscopy and polypectomy in

BACKGROUND: Thiopurines play an important role in the management of steroid-refractory and steroid-dependent ulcerative colitis. However, the effectiveness of the early use of thiopurines in ulcerative colitis remains controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multicenter prospective cohort (MOSAIK) study, we divided patients with ulcerative colitis into those who underwent early (within 6 mo of diagnosis) and late (6 mo after diagnosis) thiopurine therapy to determine the effectiveness of ea

BACKGROUND: The association between delayed post-polypectomy bleeding and chronic kidney disease remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether patients with chronic kidney disease are at an increased risk of delayed post-polypectomy bleeding. METHODS: This cohort study included patients who underwent colonoscopy and polypectomy in Korea between 2005 and 2022. We assessed various covariates, including patient-, polyp-, and procedure-related factors, using propensity score matching a
Abstract Background Increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported; however, the effects of NAFLD on the outcome of IBD remains unclear. We investigated whether the presence of NAFLD could influence the outcomes of patients with IBD. Methods We recruited 3,356 eligible patients with IBD into our study between November 2005 and November 2020. Hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed using hepatic steatosis index (HSI) o
