15Context: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) usually has an excellent prognosis. Objective: To evaluate the three-dimensional structures of PTMCs, using serial neck ultrasonography (US) in patients under active surveillance. Design and Setting: A retrospective cohort study. Participants: In total, 192 patients diagnosed with PTMC under active surveillance for >1 year were included in a median 30-month follow-up. Changes in tumor size were evaluated not only using the maximal tumor diameter b
OBJECTIVE: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) accounts for most of the increase in thyroid cancer in recent decades. We compared clinical outcomes and surgical complications of lobectomy and total thyroidectomy (TT) in PTMC patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this retrospective individual risk factor-matched cohort study, 2031 patients with PTMC were initially included. Patients who underwent lobectomy or TT were one-to-one matched according to individual risk factors, including age, sex, prim
BACKGROUND: No cohort studies have evaluated the effect of obesity on the incidence of thyroid cancer according to metabolic health status. Therefore, this study examined the association of body mass index (BMI) and metabolic health status with thyroid cancer risk. METHODS: A cohort study was performed involving 255,051 metabolically healthy (MH) and metabolically unhealthy (MUH) adults free of thyroid cancer at baseline who were followed for a median of 5.3 years. A parametric proportional haza
Obesity is a risk factor for many cancers including breast, esophageal, colon, and thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association of thyroid cancer with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and weight change. This nationwide population-based cohort study included 11,323,006 adults who joined the national health screening program. Weight change was defined as the difference between the weight of the subjects measured during the study period and the weight at the time of four yea
This was the first nationwide study of the prevalence and annual incidence of thyroid nodules, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism to take into account recent changes and to include the current status of patients receiving treatment.
BACKGROUND: Hyperthyroidism relapse in Graves disease after antithyroid drug (ATD) withdrawal is common; however, measuring the thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) at ATD withdrawal in order to predict outcomes is controversial. This study compared measurement of thyroid stimulatory antibody (TSAb) and thyrotropin-binding inhibitory immunoglobulin (TBII) at ATD withdrawal to predict relapse. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with Graves disease who were treated with ATDs and w
OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones play crucial roles in the control of energy homoeostasis and can influence body composition. In contrast, the changes in body composition might influence thyroid hormone levels. We evaluated associations between thyroid hormone levels, body composition and insulin resistance in euthyroid subjects with normal thyroid ultrasound (US) findings. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 36 655 euthyroid subjects who joined the medical health c
BACKGROUND: The early detection of papillary thyroid cancer has contributed to the increase in the incidence and improved clinical outcomes. However, recent changes of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) over time remain unclear. We evaluated changes of the clinicopathological characteristics and clinical outcomes in patients with MTC in recent years. METHODS: A total of 109 MTC patients were classified based on the year of initial surgery: 1996-2000 (n = 14), 2001-2006 (n = 39), and 2007-2011 (n
OBJECTIVE: Serum calcitonin (CT) level is used to detect medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), but the cut-off level is unclear. We aimed at identifying the optimal cut-off value of basal serum CT levels for detecting MTC. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: We retrospectively enrolled patients with hypercalcitoninemia (≥2·9 pmol/l) who had undergone thyroid ultrasonography (US) and subsequent work-up between 2001 and 2013 at Asan Medical Center. We divided patients into four groups: proven MTC (group 1, n = 93),
In the present study, BMI was not associated with the aggressive clinicopathological features or recurrence-free survivals in patients with PTC.
BACKGROUND: Molecular analysis for common somatic mutations in thyroid cancer can improve diagnostic accuracy of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the nondiagnostic or indeterminate category of thyroid nodules. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of molecular diagnosis from residual liquid-based cytology (LBC) material after cytological diagnosis. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 53 patients with thyroid nodules diagnosed as nondiagnostic, atypia of undetermined significa
A solitary skin metastasis is a rare manifestation of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). A 55-year-old woman presented with a movable subcutaneous nodule in her anterior neck for several months. Three years ago, she underwent total thyroidectomy and remnant ablation for classical PTC (pT3N0M0) and was under thyroxine suppression therapy without any evidence of recurrent disease. The subcutaneous nodule was 0.4 cm in size, firm, and movable without any change in the overlying skin. Recurrent PTC
