15We derive and compare the operating characteristics of hierarchical and square array-based testing algorithms for case identification in the presence of testing error. The operating characteristics investigated include efficiency (i.e., expected number of tests per specimen) and error rates (i.e., sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, per-family error rate, and per-comparison error rate). The methodology is illustrated by comparing different pooling algorithms for th
The use of intensfiers and other degree adverbs are highly influenced by their surrounding contexts, since their primary role is to show speakers’ emotion and attitude in a more efficient manner. In addition, women's language differs from men's in the use of intensfiers. Since Lakoff(1975), a great amount of attention has been paid to the latter problem. Most of the research, however, has relied either on researcher's own intuition or on small-scale case studies. In this paper we, using Sejong S
BACKGROUND: HIV-infected women, particularly those with advanced disease, may have higher rates of pregnancy loss (miscarriage and stillbirth) and neonatal mortality than uninfected women. Here we examine risk factors for these adverse pregnancy outcomes in a cohort of HIV-infected women in Zambia considering the impact of infant HIV status. METHODS: A total of 1229 HIV-infected pregnant women were enrolled (2001-2004) in Lusaka, Zambia and followed to pregnancy outcome. Live-born infants were t
Evaluation of measurement error is a fundamental procedure in clinical studies, field surveys, or experimental researches to confirm the reliability of measurements. If we examine oral health status of a patient, the number of caries teeth or degree of periodontal pocket depth need to be similar when an examiner repeated the measuring procedure (intra-examiner reliability) or when two independent examiners repeated the measuring procedure, to guarantee the reliability of measurement. In experime
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the association of chewing ability to oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) measured by the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) controlling for clinical oral health status, self-reported health status, demographic factors, and socioeconomic conditions among community-dwelling and institutionalized Korean elders. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised a sample of 307 community-dwelling and 102 institutionalized people over the age o
We derive the operating characteristics of three-dimensional array-based testing algorithms for case identification in the presence of testing error. The operating characteristics investigated include efficiency (i.e., expected number of tests per specimen) and error rates (e.g., sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values). The methods are illustrated by comparing the proposed algorithms with previously studied hierarchical and two-dimensional array algorithms for detecti
Abstract Little is known about the principles of surface structure design for orthopedic and dental implants. To find topographical groove patterns that could enhance osteoblast differentiation according to cell type, groove patterns are fabricated with ridges (0.35−7 µm) and grooves (0.65−6 µm) of various widths and explored their mechanisms in improving osteoblast differentiation. This study finds that a groove pattern enhancing osteoblast differentiation is associated with the ability of the
This study aimed to assess the perception of the family's primary caregiver on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and the impact on family dynamics, of dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) in adolescent and adult patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and neurocognitive disorders. Self-administered questionnaires were completed, before dental treatment, by 116 primary family caregivers of patients who received dental treatment under GA, and 102 (
INTRODUCTION: The uptake of HIV testing and linkage to care remains low among men, contributing to high HIV incidence in women in South Africa. We conducted the "Home-Based Intervention to Test and Start" (HITS) in a 2x2 factorial cluster randomized controlled trial in one of the World's largest ongoing HIV cohorts in rural South Africa aimed at enhancing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for HIV testing. METHODS: Between February and December 2018, in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess reliability, discriminant validity, and convergent validity of the Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) Korean version in a representative community sample of 8- to 15-year-old Korean children. METHODS: A Korean version of COHIP was developed according to the standard procedure of cross-cultural adaptation of self-reported instruments. A representative community sample of 2236 schoolchildren was selected by cluster sampling method. RESULTS: Mean
BACKGROUND: The relationship between periodontitis and hypertension remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association of periodontitis, missing teeth, and oral hygiene behaviors with the incidence of hypertension. METHODS: A total of 104,349 participants were selected from the National Health Insurance System-Health Screening (NHIS-HEALS) cohort. Incident hypertension and periodontitis were diagnosed based on the patients' clinical records and health examinations. A multivar
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to comprehensively assess the association of subjective and objective oral health status and oral health behaviors with happiness, under consideration of demographic, socioeconomic, and general health-related factors. This study also aims to test whether subjective oral health outcomes are better predictors of happiness compared with objective oral health outcomes. METHODS: The data were collected from 479 community-dwelling elders aged 65 years or over selected by a
OBJECTIVES: Many dental studies have assessed the effectiveness of community- or group-based interventions such as community water fluoridation. These cluster trials, of which group-randomized trials (GRTs) are one type, have design and analysis considerations not found in studies with randomization of treatments to individuals (randomized controlled trials, RCTs). The purpose of this paper is to review analytic methods used for the analysis of binary outcomes from cluster trials and to illustra
