The rate of transient beta frequency events predicts behavior across tasks and species
Hyeyoung Shin, Robert Law, Shawn Tsutsui, Christopher I. Moore, Stephanie R. Jones
SJR Q1eLifeOA

Beta oscillations (15-29Hz) are among the most prominent signatures of brain activity. Beta power is predictive of healthy and abnormal behaviors, including perception, attention and motor action. In non-averaged signals, beta can emerge as transient high-power 'events'. As such, functionally relevant differences in averaged power across time and trials can reflect changes in event number, power, duration, and/or frequency span. We show that functionally relevant differences in averaged beta pow

Thalamocortical Mechanisms Regulating the Relationship between Transient Beta Events and Human Tactile Perception

SJR Q1Cerebral CortexOA

Transient neocortical events with high spectral power in the 15-29 Hz beta band are among the most reliable predictors of sensory perception. Prestimulus beta event rates in primary somatosensory cortex correlate with sensory suppression, most effectively 100-300 ms before stimulus onset. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this perceptual association are unknown. We combined human magnetoencephalography (MEG) measurements with biophysical neural modeling to test potential cellular and cir

When sensory information is incomplete or ambiguous, the brain relies on prior expectations to infer perceptual objects. Despite the centrality of this process to perception, the neural mechanism of sensory inference is not known. Illusory contours (ICs) are key tools to study sensory inference because they contain edges or objects that are implied only by their spatial context. Using cellular resolution, mesoscale two-photon calcium imaging and multi-Neuropixels recordings in the mouse visual c

When sensory information is incomplete, the brain relies on prior expectations to infer perceptual objects. Despite the centrality of this process to perception, the neural mechanisms of sensory inference are not understood. Here we used illusory contours (ICs), multi-Neuropixels measurements, mesoscale two-photon (2p) calcium imaging and 2p holographic optogenetics in mice to reveal the neural codes and circuits of sensory inference. We discovered a specialized subset of neurons in primary visu

Functional Roles of Cortical Inhibitory Interneurons
Hyeyoung Shin, Hillel Adesnik

Abstract This chapter describes how distinct classes of cortical inhibitory interneurons (INs) mediate unique aspects of cortical computation. First, it details how INs can be classified into discrete cell types based on their morphology, cellular physiology, gene expression, and synaptic connectivity. Next, it discusses how different IN classes shape cortical dynamics through their control of excitation-inhibition balance, their role in generating neural oscillations, and their modulation by br

The rate of transient beta frequency events predicts impaired function across tasks and species

Persistent Gamma Spiking in Non-Sensory Fast-Spiking Cells Predicts Perceptual Success
Hyeyoung Shin, Christopher I. Moore
bioRxiv (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory)OA

Persistent gamma oscillations (30-55Hz) are hypothesized to temporally coordinate stimulus encoding, enabling perception. This prediction poses a conundrum: How can gamma serve as a template when the stimulus itself drives its mediators, presumably perturbing its maintenance? Specifically, fast-spiking interneurons (FS), a key gamma generator, can be highly sensory responsive. Further, the gamma-band local field potential (LFP) shows properties inconsistent with temporal coordination. Combining

With the increasing media representation of aging as negative and abnormal, anti-aging products and discourses are spreading to younger generations. This paper analyzes the anti-aging discourse in a fashion magazine targeted towards women in their 20s. It quantitatively analyzes the historical development of the antiaging industry and discourses from 1994 to 2014 in the magazine『Céci』. It also analyzes the patterns of signification associated with aging in the magazine through the use of critica

Intrinsic geometry of trial-to-trial variability in primary visual cortex is optimal for robust representation of visual similarity
Jehyun Kim, Hyeyoung Shin
bioRxiv (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory)OA

How neuronal populations construct robust representations of the sensory world despite neural variability remains unclear. Here, we show that trial-to-trial variability in mouse primary visual cortex follows a simple rule: for each stimulus, the mean and variance of spike counts across neurons show a highly stereotyped relationship, with a slope of 1 on a log-log scale. To test how this geometry of trial-to-trial variability affects sensory representations, we numerically manipulated the slope o

This paper examines the advertisements for mass-produced women's clothing, which appeared in the 1980s issues of the fashion magazine Wolganmeot. This study explores the communicative aspect of fashion advertisements of the 1980s as a platform for complex and dynamic interactions between fashion brands, female consumers, and the rapidly changing social, cultural, and economic conditions of the period. The research focuses on advertisements in the formal and character casual categories that targe
