15In 2003, 13 isolates of iridovirus were obtained from cultured flounders Paralichthys olivaceus during epizootics in Korea. The full open reading frames (ORFs) encoding the major capsid protein (MCP) (1362 bp) from the 13 flounder iridoviruses (FLIVs) were sequenced and the deduced amino acid sequences were phylogenetically analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis of the MCP revealed that all 13 FLIVs were the same species as rock bream iridovirus (RBIV), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), and infectious s
The porcine model is a more useful training tool than the manikin model for cricothyrotomy with PCK because of its reality and similarity to human anatomy.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the factors associated with successful endotracheal intubation (ETI) on the first-attempt in an emergency department. METHOD: We studied all of the ETI data at two urban emergency departments over a 5-year period. We assessed the intubator's specialty and training level, intubation method, device used, predicted airway difficulty and cause of ETIs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify factors affecting the fir
The GVL was not used frequently by EPs during the initial two years after its introduction. Although the GVL provides a better glottic view, the overall success rates were similar to a CL. The GVL may be useful in patients with difficult airway.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the use of a GlideScope video laryngoscope (GVL) improves first-attempt intubation success compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope (MAC) in the emergency department (ED). DESIGN: A propensity score-matched analysis of data from a prospective multicentre ED airway registry-the Korean Emergency Airway Management Registry (KEAMR). SETTING: 4 academic EDs located in a metropolitan city and a province in South Korea. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 4041 adult patients without
The intubation performance of novices using the McGrath MAC was equal to their performance using the GlideScope Ranger in regular simulated airways.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor in a smart watch can accurately recognise the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in cardiac arrest patients compared with carotid artery palpation. METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted on 50 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients who visited the emergency department (ED) of one tertiary hospital. As soon as the patient arrived at the ED, advanced cardiac life support was c
We developed a new type of mobile teleradiology system using an ultramobile PC (UMPC) for web-based remote viewing over a wireless network. We assessed the diagnostic performance of this system for abdominal CT interpretation. Performance was compared with an emergency department clinical monitor using a DICOM viewer. A total of 100 abdominal CT examinations were presented to four observers. There were 56 examinations showing appendicitis and 44 which were normal. The observers viewed the images
BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia has become a common procedure to provide excellent pain relief with few complications. Pneumorrhachis and pneumocephalus are rare complications of unintentional dural puncture and injection of air into the subarachnoid or subdural space. No cases of cardiac arrest associated with these complications have been reported in the literature previously. CASE PRESENTATION: We report cases of pneumorrhachis and pneumocephalus in two Korean women who previously visited a lo
OBJECTIVE: We examined the pain-relieving effect of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia performed by emergency physicians on elderly hip fracture patients. METHODS: This study is a prospective, non-randomized, case-control study. The subjects were patients older than 65 years who visited the emergency department with a hip fracture. After we obtained informed consent, two emergency physicians performed an ultrasound-guided three-in-one femoral block using 20 mL of 0.5% bupivacaine. The pain sc
