15As interest has increased in the interaction between low-temperature plasmas and living cells or organic materials, the role of modelling and simulation of atmospheric pressure plasmas has become important in understanding the effects of charged particles and radicals in biomedical applications. This review paper introduces the general properties of low-temperature atmospheric pressure plasma devices for biomedical applications and explains recently reported simulation results. Control parameter
Helium (He) and Argon (Ar) atmospheric pressure plasma jets operated with low-frequency power source are designed and studied. The current and voltage waveforms, formation of plasma jets, estimated rotational and vibrational temperatures, optical emission spectra, and numerical simulations for He and Ar gases are investigated to analyze the plasma characteristics. Ar plasma shows higher discharge current and many instantaneous current peaks compared with He plasma. For gas flow between 1 and 7 L
Distinctive discharge formation in atmospheric Ar and He plasmas was observed in the microwave frequency band using coaxial transmission line resonators. Ar plasmas formed a plasma plume whereas He formed only confined plasmas. As the frequency increased from 0.9 GHz to 2.45 GHz, the Ar plasma exhibited contraction and filamentation, and the He plasmas were constricted. Various powers and gas flow rates were applied to identify the effect of the electric field and gas flow rate on plasma plume f
Abstract Oral cavity and teeth are important organs of human body. The attention and cost for dental treatments increase every year. In dental clinics, the most common diseases are dental caries, periodontal disease, and stomatitis. Dental aesthetics such as tooth whitening is one of important part of dental clinics. However, conventional treatment methods in dental clinics have limitations by pain and long‐time treatment. Nonthermal plasmas have shown great potential as noble techniques to dent
BACKGROUND: Recently, non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma sources have been used for biomedical applications such as sterilization, cancer treatment, blood coagulation, and wound healing. Gold nanoparticles (gNPs) have unique optical properties and are useful for biomedical applications. Although low-temperature plasma has been shown to be effective in killing oral bacteria on agar plates, its bactericidal effect is negligible on the tooth surface. Therefore, we used 30-nm gNPs to enhance th
A microwave-excited atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (uAPPJ) exhibited a synergistic sterilization effect when combined with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), distilled water (DW) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis. The sterilization efficacy of H2O2-uAPPJ increased as the H2O2 concentration increased. The addition of TiO2 also remarkably increased the sterilization efficacy. To find the main factor for the sterilization effect, optical emission spectra and the degradation rate of a methylene blu
The authors investigated the protein expression of double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR), which was identified by using a previous cDNA microarray study, to discover PKR's correlations with several pathological parameters and to elucidate its role in neoplastic transformation and progression of lung adenocarcinomas. Immunohistochemistry for PKR was performed and a semiquantitative scoring method was calculated based on staining intensity and percentage of immunoreactive tumor cells
A new type of microwave-excited atmospheric pressure plasma source, based on the principle of parallel plate transmission line resonator, is developed for the treatment of large areas in biomedical applications such as skin treatment and wound healing. A stable plasma of 20 mm width is sustained by a small microwave power source operated at a frequency of 700 MHz and a gas flow rate of 0.9 slm. Plasma impedance and plasma density of this plasma source are estimated by fitting the calculated refl
Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTP) has been shown to induce cell death in various mammalian cancer cells. Accumulated evidence also shows that NTP could be clinically used in cancer therapy. However, the current NTP-based applications lack target specificity. Here, a novel method in NTP-mediated cancer therapeutics was described with enhanced target specificity by treating EGF (epidermal growth factor)-conjugated GNP (gold nanoparticle). The treatment with EGF-conjugated GNP complex,
A comparative study of electron kinetics between single-frequency (SF) microplasmas and their equivalent dual-frequency (DF) microplasmas with matching effective frequencies in atmospheric-pressure helium discharges was performed using particle-in-cell simulation with a Monte Carlo collision. The effective-frequency concept helps in analyzing DF microplasmas in a fashion similar to SF microplasmas with effective parameters. In this study, the plasma characteristics such as the plasma potential,
Hiccups are an involuntarily powerful spasm of the diaphragm, followed by a sudden inspiration with a closure of the glottis. Hiccups that are caused by gastric distention, spicy foods and neural dysfunction can resolve themselves without any treatment. Some hiccups are associated with certain diseases or they occur postsurgically, and life-restricting intractable hiccups should be treated. The cause of hiccups should be quickly determined so as to administer the proper treatment. Hiccups often
This paper presents the evolution of striated discharge patterns in helium and argon atmospheric-pressure plasma jets as a function of gas flow rate and driving voltage. The striated patterns have been observed in helium and argon plasma jets at gas flow rates above 5 and 3 L/min, respectively. The striation patterns appear over the entire voltage range used for investigation (from 4 to 8 kV) in the helium plasma jet, whereas in the argon plasma jet, striation patterns appear over a limited volt
BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is one of the most common benign tumors of the sinonasal area and malignant transformation has frequently been reported. However, the exact mechanism of the transition from benign lesion to malignancy is not known. The Wnt signaling pathway involves a network of multiple signaling glycoproteins that are known to play an important role in embryogenesis and carcinogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of the Wnt pathway
The behavior of a low-power microwave Ar plasma jet according to the target shape and distance is investigated. The plasma jet shows distinct behavior when it contacts a human finger or grounded metals. No plasma channel and no attraction of the jet to the human finger and metal plate are observed in contrast to low-frequency plasmas. Glow-to-arc transition does not occur even at a very small target distance (<1 mm) between a sharp metal tip and bare electrodes. It is a highly favorable prope
