15BACKGROUND: Stent placement before retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) can theoretically expand the ureter to improve access and remove stones. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of preoperative ureteral stenting on access and surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent RIRS between January 2010 and December 2016 at multiple centers. The patients were divided into two groups based on whether or not a ureteral stent was inserted preoperatively. The c
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical efficacy and prognosis of muscle-invasive bladder cancer according to the basal/squamous-like (BASQ) classification system based on immunohistochemical staining [CK5/6(+), CK14(+), GATA3(-), and FOXA1(-)]. METHODS: One hundred patients diagnosed with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (cT2-4 N0-3 M0) were included in the study. All patients underwent radical cystectomy after transurethral removal of bladder tumor. Immunostaining was performed for CK5/6, CK14, FO
Urothelial carcinoma (UC) can occur in various parts of the urinary tract and occurs in different stages and grades. The disease recurs frequently and is monitored through a series of invasive tests, such as cystoscopy or ureteroscopy, over the lifetime of an individual. Although many researchers have attempted to stratify the risks of UC, with the majority being based on cancer characteristics and host factors such as performance status, a risk classification system has yet to be fully develope
BACKGROUND: Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer can be controlled by transurethral resection of bladder (TURB), but suffers from frequent recurrences in 60-70% of cases. Although, recurrence interval after TURB influences treatment course and prognosis, its implication and risk factors have not been fully elucidated. We evaluated the risk factors of early (within 1 yr) and late (after 1 yr) recurrence of pTa bladder cancer and clinical significance of recurrence interval on disease progression an
The objective of this study was to investigate pretreatment systemic inflammatory response (SIR) markers in patients who underwent initial intravesical treatment for high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). A total of 385 patients who underwent initial intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin treatment after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURB) were included. We analyzed the relationship between oncological outcomes and ratios of SIR markers, including neutrophil-to-lymphocy
Introduction . To investigate the correlation between preoperative De Ritis ratio (aspartate transaminase (AST)/alanine transaminase (ALT)) and postoperative outcome in patients with urothelial cell carcinoma (UC) treated with radical cystectomy. Materials and Methods . We analyzed the clinical and pathological data of 771 patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder UC. Patients were divided into two groups according to the optimal value of AST/ALT ratio. The effect of the AST/ALT rati
Radical cystectomy (RC) is the standard treatment for patients diagnosed with muscle invasive bladder cancer, but is associated with significant morbidity and long hospital stays. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is based on a variety of interventions during the peri-treatment stage. It is designed to improve morbidity, enhance recovery, and reduce hospital stays after RC. The study provides an overview of the key elements of the ERAS protocol recommended for patients undergoing RC and dir
We evaluated the contribution of tumor volume (TV) to localized prostate cancer (PCa) patients' prognosis. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 2394 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) for localized PCa. The effect of TV and tumor prostate ratio (TV/PV) on PCa patients' prognosis was analyzed through Kaplan-Meier and Cox-proportional analysis. The mean prostate volume for all patients was 36.5 ± 15.4 cc, and the mean TV was 5.9 ± 8.3 cc. A significant positive relationship was o
To determine the prognostic value of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in patients with bladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy. Total of 747 patients underwent radical cystectomy; of these, only 164 did not undergo lymph node dissection (LND). The patients were divided into 4 groups: N0, N1, LVI without LND, and non-LVI without LND. Patients in the N1 and LVI groups had significantly higher T stages and grades, as well 1.5- to 2-fold higher recurrence and mortality rates. Overall survival (
The PLR was an independent prognostic factor for survival outcomes in patients with mRCC. However, the association was statistically significant only in patients with clear cell type mRCC.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of urinary retention (UR) on holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort of patients who underwent HoLEP between January 2010 and December 2016 was performed. The perioperative factors, including the International Prostate Symptom Score, Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, prostate-specific antigen, urody
OBJECTIVE: Although transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is a standard treatment and determines staging for nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer, many deficiencies persist. There is a risk of upstaging and residual cancer when repeat TURBT is performed. Authors compared the results of repeat TURBT by institution performing the initial TURBT. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 289 patients who underwent repeat TURBT within 2-6 weeks after initial TURBT between 19
We evaluated the expression of PDLIM2 in human kidney cancer cell lines from primary or metastatic origins and found that PDLIM2 expression was highly elevated in metastatic kidney cancers. We evaluated the effect of PDLIM2 inhibition by RNA interference method. PDLIM2 knockdown showed the decreased proliferation and metastatic character in human metastatic kidney cancer cells. By repeated round of orthotopic injection of RenCa mouse kidney cancer cell line, we obtained metastatic prone mouse ki
We investigated the efficacy of and risk from holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) due to discontinuation of antithrombotics in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Patients in the prospective SNUH-BPH Database Registry who underwent HoLEP between December 2010 and December 2017 were enrolled. Preoperative evaluation included symptom score questionnaires, laboratory tests, urine tests, prostate-specific antigens, urodynamic study, and transrectal ultrasonography. Postop
