15When evaluating patients with neurofibromatosis and scoliosis, a careful search for the evidence of dystrophic changes should done, because prognosis and management depend highly on the presence of these changes. Preoperative imaging studies including computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging are recommended, especially in cases of dystrophic scoliosis, to detect unrecognized intraspinal lesions. The radiographic findings and the response to treatment in patients with nondystrophic scoli
A younger age at transplantation and at pregnancy was associated with a greater likelihood of a live birth. Transplantation to conception interval of less than 1 year was not associated with a greater number of adverse pregnancy events when compared with the group with transplantation to conception interval greater than 1 year.
Lateral growth disturbance of the capital femoral epiphysis is not necessarily associated with poor acetabular development, as when dysplasia does occur it is generally evident prior to the identification of the physeal arrest. It is important to monitor acetabular development after reduction rather than search for radiographic changes of physeal arrest, which are difficult to detect in young children.
Eleven consecutive patients with 12 congenital pseudarthroses of the tibia had intramedullary fixation and autogenous bone grafting as an initial treatment. None of these patients had previous surgeries or other concomitant procedures. The average age of the patients at the time of surgery was 2.5 years (range, 0.5-8.8 years). Four patients achieved initial union after the first index operation; two patients achieved union with no additional procedures, and three patients required an exchange in
Eating and swallowing food are major challenges for the elderly with dysphagia. Three-dimensional (3D) food printing allows the creation of elderly food with nutrition , attractive shapes, and soft texture customizations. This study aimed to investigate the printability of soft-textured food (the mixture of chickpea protein isolate (CPI) with mealworm protein isolate (MPI) gel) by using single-nozzle printing (SNP) and coaxial printing (CoP) techniques. Artificial food boluses were prepared and
To evaluate the potential use as a therapeutic agent for osteoporotic fractures, we examined the effects of intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone on fracture healing in ovariectomized rats. At three months post-ovariectomy, bilateral tibial shaft fractures were induced and stabilized by intramedullary nailing with Kirschnerwires. Saline, 17-estradiol, or recombinant human PTH(1-84) was given once a day for 30 consecutive days during fracture healing. Fracture healing was assessed by
We describe two patients with an atypical congenital kyphosis in which a hypoplastic lumbar vertebral body lay in the spinal canal because of short pedicles. There were no defects in the posterior elements, or any apparent instability of the facet joints. Both patients were treated successfully by anterior fusion to the levels immediately above and below the affected vertebra, and posterior fusion which extended one level more both proximally and distally. This gave progressive correction of the
Various methods for isolation of type I collagen using acids, bases, enzymes, and their combinations have been applied. However, a lack of standardization exists among type I collagens isolated by various approaches. Consequently, in this study, we assessed the influence of acetic acid residue on type I collagen isolated by pepsin-acetic acid treatment, the fabrication of collagen-based porous scaffolds, and the seeded cells on collagen scaffolds. Unlike the isolated collagen dialyzed by deioniz
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium known to infect the human stomach. It can cause various gastrointestinal diseases including gastritis and gastric cancer. Hesperetin is a major flavanone component contained in citrus fruits. It has been reported to possess antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. However, the antibacterial mechanism of hesperetin against H. pylori has not been reported yet. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the inhibitory effects of
