Zwitter-Wettability and Antifogging Coatings with Frost-Resisting Capabilities

SJR Q1ACS Nano

Antifogging coatings with hydrophilic or even superhydrophilic wetting behavior have received significant attention due to their ability to reduce light scattering by film-like condensation. However, under aggressive fogging conditions, these surfaces may exhibit frost formation or excess and nonuniform water condensation, which results in poor optical performance of the coating. In this paper, we show that a zwitter-wettable surface, a surface that has the ability to rapidly absorb molecular wa

Transparent substrates are widely used for optical applications from lenses for personal and sports eyewear to transparent displays and sensors. While these substrates require excellent optical properties, they often suffer from a variety of environmental challenges such as excessive fogging and surface contamination. In this work, it is demonstrated that a wet-style superhydrophobic coating, which simultaneously exhibits antifogging, antireflective, and self-cleaning properties, can be prepared

Fragrances are amphiphilic and highly volatile, all of which makes them a challenging cargo to efficiently encapsulate and retain in microcapsules using traditional approaches. We address these limitations by introducing a new strategy that combines bulk and microfluidic emulsification: a stable fragrance-in-water (F/W) emulsion that is primarily prepared from bulk emulsification is incorporated within a polymer microcapsule via microfluidic emulsification. On the basis of the in-depth study of

Strategies for Hydrogen Bonding Based Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Poly(vinyl alcohol) with Weak Polyacids
Hyomin Lee, Rémy Mensire, Robert E. Cohen, Michael F. Rubner
SJR Q1Macromolecules

Multilayer thin films that consist of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and weak polyacids such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were prepared by hydrogen bonding interactions. Both the degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight of PVA were investigated in terms of their influence on growth behavior and pH stability. Multilayer films containing PVA and PAA could be assembled successfully only by using partially hydrolyzed PVA and low-pH solutions. By comparing films containin

Manipulating surface properties using chemistry and roughness has led to the development of advanced multifunctional surfaces. Here, in a nanostructured polymer film consisting of a hydrophilic reservoir of chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose capped with various hydrophobic layers, we demonstrate the role of a third design factor, water permeation rate. We use this additional design criterion to produce antifogging coatings that readily absorb water vapor while simultaneously exhibiting hydrophobic

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Living cells can spatiotemporally control biochemical reactions to dynamically assemble membraneless organelles and remodel cytoskeleton. Herein, we present a microfluidic approach to prepare semi-permeable polymersomes comprising of amphiphilic triblock copolymer to achieve external signal-driven complex coacervation as well as biophysical reconstitution of cytoskeleton within the polymersomes. We also show that the microfluidic synthesis of polymersomes enables precise control over size, effic

Water and Oil Insoluble PEGDA-Based Microcapsule: Biocompatible and Multicomponent Encapsulation

SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Despite the recent development in various materials capable of encapsulating biomolecules, there exist limited reports on multicomponent encapsulation in biocompatible microcapsules. In this letter, we utilize the molecular weight dependent solubility of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and droplet microfluidics to achieve direct encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cargoes in PEG microcapsules. By using PEGDA 250 as the middle phase, we demonstrate that these PEGDA-based mi

SJR Q1Advanced Functional Materials

Abstract A hydrogel microcapsule with an intermediate thin oil layer is presented to achieve smart release of a broad range of cargoes triggered via diverse stimuli. A microfluidic technique is used to produce triple emulsion droplets with a thin oil layer that separates the innermost aqueous phase from the hydrogel prepolymer phase, which transforms into a hydrogel shell via photopolymerization. The intermediate oil layer within the hydrogel microcapsule acts as an effective diffusion barrier,

Fluorocarbon oil reinforced triple emulsion drops are prepared to encapsulate a broad range of polar and non-polar cargoes in a single platform. In addition, it is demonstrated that the fluorocarbon oil within the emulsion drop acts as an effective diffusion barrier, as well as a non-adhesive layer, enabling highly efficient encapsulation and retention of small molecules and active biomolecules in microcapsules.

SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) have been widely used in the separation, purification, and enrichment of biomolecules for their excellent biocompatibility. While ultracentrifugation and microfluidic devices have been combined with ATPS to facilitate the separation of biomolecules and achieve high recovery yields, they often lack the ability to effectively isolate and separate biomolecules in low concentrations. In this work, we present a strategy that leverages the preferential partitioning of

SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

We present a microfluidic approach that utilizes temperature-responsive and biocompatible palm oil as the shell material in microcapsules to simultaneously achieve hermetic sealing as well as on-demand temperature-triggered release of the encapsulated actives. Unlike common paraffin waxes (e.g., eicosane), microcapsule shells comprising palm oil do not form pores or cracks during freezing and provide a hermetic seal, a nearly perfect seal that separates the core containing the actives from the s
