McGrath MAC Videolaryngoscope Versus Optiscope Video Stylet for Tracheal Intubation in Patients With Manual Inline Cervical Stabilization: A Randomized Trial

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

BACKGROUND: Manual inline stabilization of the head and neck is a recommended maneuver for tracheal intubation in patients with a suspected cervical injury. However, because applying this maneuver inevitably restricts neck flexion and head extension, indirect intubating devices such as a videolaryngoscope or a video stylet could be required for successful tracheal intubation. In this study, we compared the clinical performance of the McGrath MAC videolaryngoscope versus the Optiscope video style

SJR Q2Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology

BACKGROUND: Hospital acquired pressure injury (HAPI) is associated with poor clinical outcomes and high medical costs. Patients undergoing surgery in the prone position are particularly vulnerable to perioperative HAPI. This prospective observational study investigated the factors associated with HAPI in patients undergoing elective spine surgery in the prone position. METHODS: Two hundred eighty-seven patients undergoing elective spine surgery participated in this study. Demographics, periopera

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

We hypothesized that external laryngeal manipulation would reduce cervical spine motion during video laryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization by reducing the force required to lift the videolaryngoscope. In this randomized crossover trial, 27 neurointerventional patients underwent two consecutive videolaryngoscopic intubation attempts under manual in-line stabilization. External laryngeal manipulation was applied to all patients in either the first or second attempt. In the se

OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS) offers the advantage of providing real-time imaging features, yet it is not generally used. This study aims to discuss the benefits of utilizing IOUS in spinal cord surgery and review related literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent spinal cord surgery utilizing IOUS at a single institution were retrospectively collected and analyzed to evaluate the benefits derived from the use of IOUS. RESULTS: A total of 43 consecutive patient

SJR Q2Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica

BACKGROUND: The cricothyroid membrane is the most commonly accessed location for invasive surgical airway. Although the laryngeal handshake method is recommended for identifying the cricothyroid membrane, there is no clinical data regarding the utility of the laryngeal handshake method in cricothyroid membrane identification. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of cricothyroid membrane identification between the laryngeal handshake method and simple palpation. METHODS: After

No radiographic index predicts difficult intubation using the Optiscope™ in cervical spine surgery patients: a retrospective study
Hyongmin Oh, Hansol Kim, Hyun‐Kyu Yoon, Hyung‐Chul Lee, Hee‐Pyoung Park
SJR Q1BMC AnesthesiologyOA

BACKGROUND: The Optiscope™ can be used for intubation with minimal neck motion. We retrospectively investigated radiographic predictors of difficult intubation using the Optiscope™ by analyzing preoperative radiographic images. METHODS: One hundred eighty-four patients who were intubated with the Optiscope™ under manual in-line cervical stabilization for cervical spine surgery were enrolled. Radiographic indices were measured on preoperative cervical spine lateral X-ray and magnetic resonance im

SJR Q2Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology

BACKGROUND: Cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH) is a serious complication and has a strong relationship with systemic inflammatory responses. Given previously reported relationships between leukocytosis and anemia with ASAH-related cerebral vasospasm, this study examined the association between the preoperative white blood cell-to-hemoglobin ratio (WHR) and postoperative symptomatic cerebral vasospasm (SCV) in patients with ASAH. METHODS: Demographic, preoperative

High Intraoperative Serum Lactate Level is Associated with Acute Kidney Injury after Brain Tumor Resection
Seungeun Choi, Jiwon You, Yoon Jung Kim, Hyung‐Chul Lee, Hee‐Pyoung Park, Chul‐Kee Park, Hyongmin Oh
SJR Q2Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology

BACKGROUND: Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Identification of risk factors for postoperative AKI is clinically important. Serum lactate can increase in situations of inadequate oxygen delivery and is widely used to assess a patient's clinical course. We investigated the association between intraoperative serum lactate levels and AKI after brain tumor resection. METHODS: Demographics, medical and surgical history, tumor characteristics, surgery,

SJR Q2Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology

BACKGROUND: Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) can has been used for analgesia after lumbar spine surgery. However, its effect on postoperative quality of recovery (QoR) remains underexplored in patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) or oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). This study hypothesized that ESPB would improve postoperative QoR in this patient cohort. METHODS: Patients undergoing TLIF or OLIF were randomized into ESPB (n=38) and control groups (n=38). In th

BACKGROUND: Anesthetic techniques can affect perioperative neuroendocrine function. The objective of this study was to compare 3-month post-operative neuroendocrine functional outcomes between sevoflurane and propofol anesthesia in patients undergoing endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) for removal of non-functional pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) retrospectively. METHODS: Among 356 patients who underwent ETS for removal of NFPAs under sevoflurane-remifentanil anesthesia (sevoflurane group, n =

PURPOSE: Applying a cervical collar during videolaryngoscopic intubation can increase the lifting force required to achieve adequate glottic view, potentially increasing cervical spine motion. We aimed to compared cervical spine motion during videolaryngoscopic intubation between applying only the posterior piece (posterior-only group) and applying both the anterior and posterior pieces (anterior-posterior group) in patients wearing a cervical collar. METHODS: We conducted a dingle-centre, paral

Direct versus indirect epiglottis elevation in cervical spine movement during videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization: a randomized controlled trial
Seungeun Choi, Dong Ju Lee, Kyung Won Shin, Yoon Jung Kim, Hee‐Pyoung Park, Hyongmin Oh
SJR Q1BMC AnesthesiologyOA

BACKGROUND: During videolaryngoscopic intubation, direct epiglottis elevation provides a higher percentage of glottic opening score than indirect epiglottis elevation. In this randomized controlled trial, we compared cervical spine movement during videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization between the two glottis exposure methods. METHODS: Videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization was performed using C-MAC® D-blade: direct (n = 51) and indirect (n = 5
