Are Millennials Coming to Town? Residential Location Choice of Young Adults
Hyojung Lee
SJR Q1Urban Affairs Review

How widespread is the downtown resurgence among the current generation of young adults 25 to 34 years old, often referred to as the Millennials? Answering the question, this article provides a detailed analysis of the past, current, and future geographic population distribution, focusing on the young adults. It first documents the demographic shifts from 1990 to 2015 by distance from the central business districts (CBDs) of the 50 largest U.S. metros. The results of the intrametropolitan analysi

The Geography of Gentrification and Residential Mobility
Hyojung Lee, Kristin L. Perkins
SJR Q1Social Forces

Abstract Gentrification research often starts with the hypothesis that gentrification causes displacement of a neighborhood’s original residents, particularly low-income and vulnerable residents. Recent research based on large-scale quantitative data suggests that the displacement effects of gentrification for low-income residents evident from case studies and qualitative data are modest at the macroscale. We use geocoded microdata from the American Community Survey to investigate the associatio

Are Millennials leaving town? Reconciling peak Millennials and youthification hypotheses
Hyojung Lee
SJR Q1International Journal of Urban SciencesOA

Are Millennials leaving town? Yes, they are. Are young adults leaving town? No, they are not. The seemingly contradicting answers are due to the fact that age and birth cohort are distinct concepts. Showing how these two phenomena can coexist, this paper aims to provide detailed and timely information on how Millennials are faring compared to previous generations in the United States. Using the 1962–2019 Current Population Survey (CPS), the paper first analyzes the current status of Millennials,

Bank adaptation to neighborhood change: Mortgage lending and the Community Reinvestment Act
Hyojung Lee, Raphael W. Bostic
SJR Q1Journal of Urban EconomicsOA

This research explores whether banks strategically leverage regulatory rules for the Community Reinvestment Act that fix a neighborhood's eligibility status over a decade based on a neighborhood's economic trajectory over that decade. Using 2004–2011 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data, we find that banks approve loans more frequently in those neighborhoods that are most rapidly improving, and that this effect is stronger if the neighborhoods are CRA-eligible low- and moderate-income (LMI)

On the competition of CDN companies: Impact of new telco-CDNs' federation
Hyojung Lee, Lingjie Duan, Yung Yi

To cope with consumers' ever-increasing demand of high-quality contents in the Internet, content providers (e.g., YouTube) mainly pay to global pure-play CDN companies (e.g., Akamai) instead of ISPs for content delivery. This motivates ISPs to offer their own regional CDN services as Telco-CDNs that compete with the pure-play CDNs for CPs in the CDN market. Unlike the pure-play CDNs with global consumer coverage geographically, Telco-CDNs have the strength of better QoS due to integration of tra

Multi-Batch Scheduling for Improving Performance of Hyperledger Fabric Based IoT Applications
Hyojung Lee, Changsuk Yoon, Sangji Bae, Sangwon Lee, Kyusang Lee, Sangjun Kang, Kiwoon Sung, Seung-Jai Min

Blockchain technology has been regarded as a paradigm that enables enterprises to deploy decentralized Internet of things (IoT) applications, which require security, mutual truthfulness, privacy, and data reliability. However, the adoption of blockchain technology on IoT applications has been limited due to the lack of blockchain's capability to process a huge amount of transaction requests from IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a new transaction processing mechanism, called Accelerator, wh

Back to the suburbs? Millennial residential locations from the Great Recession to the pandemic
Hyojung Lee, Whitney Airgood-Obrycki, Riordan Frost
SJR Q1Urban Studies

In the past decade, there has been a great deal of attention paid to and speculation about the residential mobility and location decisions of millennials. Academics and practitioners alike have been trying to determine where millennials are moving and why, including whether they are leading a ‘back to the city’ movement or whether they are moving to the suburbs as previous generations did at their age. Using US Census data, this article examines the geographical population distribution of young

SJR Q1Alexandria Engineering JournalOA

The Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing public health concern worldwide. COVID-19 infections continue to occur and thus, it is important to assess the effects of various public health measures. This study aims to forecast COVID-19 cases by geographical area in Korea, based on the effects of different control-intervention intensities (CII). Methods involved estimating the effective reproduction number (Rt) by Korean geographical area using the SEIHR model, and the instantaneous r

Economic Analysis of Blockchain Technology on Digital Platform Market
Hyojung Lee, Kiwoon Sung, Kyusang Lee, Jaeseok Lee, Seung-Jai Min

Blockchain technology on the platform business becomes a new paradigm which gets security, irreversibility, and trustfulness closer to both of clients and service providers (SPs) for providing a better quality of service. To provide an economic analysis of such blockchain-based platform business, a game theoretic approach is used to model a competitive market against the incumbent platform operated by a centralizer as a trusted third party. In this market, the platforms behave as a mediator to d

Effects of the Community Reinvestment Act on small business lending
Lei Ding, Hyojung Lee, Raphael W. Bostic
SJR Q1Journal of Urban Affairs

This study examines the effectiveness of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) in facilitating small business lending to lower-income neighborhoods. Taking advantage of an exogenous policy shock that resulted in neighborhood-level changes in CRA eligibility, we identify changes in small business lending in tracts that became CRA eligible and CRA ineligible and compare these with control groups constructed in two ways. The results of our difference-in-differences analysis uniformly show increases

On the economic impact of Telco CDNs and their alliance on the CDN market
Hyojung Lee, Dong-Myung Lee, Yung Yi

The CDN (Content Delivery Network) market consists of content providers (CPs), Internet service providers (ISPs), and CDN providers and evolves based on their complex cooperation and competition. Recently, the rapid growth of content-oriented traffic has brought forth a new entity called Telco CDNs in the content delivery supply chain, where Telco CDNs are the ISP-operated CDN providers, vertically integrating content delivery service with traffic engineering, so as to provide better reliability

Traffic Scheduling and Revenue Distribution Among Providers in the Internet: Tradeoffs and Impacts
Hyojung Lee, Hyeryung Jang, Jeong-woo Cho, Yung Yi
SJR Q1IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications

The Internet consists of economically selfish players in terms of access/transit connection and content distribution. Such selfish behaviors often lead to techno-economic inefficiencies, such as unstable peering and revenue imbalance. Recent research results suggest that cooperation-based fair revenue sharing, i.e., multi-level Internet service provider (ISP) settlements, can be a candidate solution to avoid unfair revenue share. However, it has been under-explored whether selfish ISPs actually

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 variants on cost-effectiveness across age groups, considering vaccination efforts and nonpharmaceutical interventions in Republic of Korea. We aim to assess the costs needed to reduce COVID-19 cases and deaths using age-structured model. The proposed age-structured model analyzes COVID-19 transmission dynamics, evaluates vaccination effectiveness, and assesses the impact of the Delta and Omicron variants. The model is fitted using data from the Republic
