A Distinct Form of Deviance or a Variation of Bullying? Examining the Developmental Pathways and Motives of Cyberbullying Compared With Traditional Bullying in South Korea
Ji-Hoon Kim, Hyojong Song, Wesley G. Jennings
SJR Q1Crime & Delinquency

Cyberbullying has been subject to a debate about whether it is a subtype of traditional bullying or a distinct deviant behavior from traditional bullying. Applying a longitudinal South Korean youth sample and latent group-based trajectory modeling, the current study examines (a) an overlap of developmental trajectories between cyberbullying and traditional bullying, and (b) effects of predictors on developmental trajectory groups for both cyberbullying and traditional bullying. It is concluded t

SJR Q1International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology

The current study examines effects of changes in intra-family relationships after parental incarceration on internalizing behaviors of the children of incarcerated parents. Using data from a sample of 249 incarcerated parents with minor children in South Korea, the present study found that perceived degradation of family relationships among inmate parents, their non-incarcerated spouses, and children was a significant risk factor of internalizing behaviors of children of incarcerated parents. Motivations, Propensities, and Their Interplays on Online Bullying Perpetration: A Partial Test of Situational Action Theory
Hyojong Song, Seong-Sik Lee
SJR Q1Crime & Delinquency

Using data gathered from 757 college students in South Korea, the current study examines applicability of situational action theory (SAT) to online bullying perpetration (OBP). Specifically, the current study focuses on testing interplays between motivations in the criminogenic online setting (temptation and provocation) and individual propensities (morality and self-control) as well as interplay between two individual propensities on OBP. Results show that morality significantly buffers the eff

Exploring Risk and Protective Factors for Cyberbullying and Their Interplay: Evidence from a Sample of South Korean College Students
Seong-Sik Lee, Hyojong Song, Jeong‐Hoon Park
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study explored risk and protective factors for cyberbullying perpetration and examined whether they independently and interactively predicted cyberbullying perpetration. Based on key propositions of micro-level theories of crime and delinquency, we adopted two risk factors, cyberbullying victimization and association with cyberbullying peers, and two protective factors, morality and self-control. Using a sample of South Korean college students (N = 244; 112 women (45.9%), 132 men (54.1%); M

Gender Differences in the Link Between Cyberbullying and Parental Supervision Trajectories
Hyojong Song, Yeungjeom Lee, Jihoon Kim
SJR Q1Crime & Delinquency

This study aims to explore joint trajectories of parental supervision and cyberbullying for boys and girls, respectively. Drawing on a longitudinal sample of South Korean youth, we employ a latent group-based trajectory modeling approach to examine overlapping patterns of parental supervision and cyberbullying trajectories, and gender differences in the bivariate overlap. We found that boys with higher levels of parental supervision were more likely to be in the Noninvolved cyberbullying group,

Do Negative Emotions Matter? Paths From Victimization to Cyber and Traditional Bullying From a General Strain Theory Perspective
Yeungjeom Lee, Jihoon Kim, Hyojong Song
SJR Q1Crime & Delinquency

Drawing on theoretical propositions of general strain theory (GST), the current study aims to examine whether general victimization as a source of criminogenic strain predicts two different types of bullying, traditional and cyberbullying perpetrations, and whether negative emotionality, such as trait-based anger and depression, conditions the effects of general victimization on bullying. Using a Korean adolescent sample, we adopt cross-lagged dynamic panel models to investigate the longitudinal

Noxious Chemical Exposure Trends as Measures of Green Victimization: Public Health, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Trends, and Green Criminology
Michael J. Lynch, Hyojong Song
SJR Q1Sociological Spectrum

Green criminologists have argued that exposure to environmental pollution constitutes a serious form of green victimization of the general public and public health. This claim has not been widely assessed empirically. The present study employs data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) over time to examine trends in exposure to environmental toxins among the U.S. population. NHANES data allow such an assessment through the collection of biological sampling used to de

Support or Strain?: Transnational Social Ties and Deviant Behaviors Among Multicultural Adolescents in South Korea
Sou Hyun Jang, Hyojong Song, Juyeon Kim
SJR Q1Deviant Behavior

Despite the increasing population of multicultural adolescents in Korea with foreign-born parents, research into their deviant behavior, particularly in relation to transnational ties with their mothers’ home countries, remains limited. Addressing this gap, our study investigated the impact of such ties on multicultural adolescents’ deviant behaviors. Utilizing waves 7–9 of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Survey (N = 1,193, n = 3,330), we employed a hybrid random effects negative binomial reg

Perceptions of recidivism risk among youth on probation for digital sex offences: the role of maladaptive cognitions about the internet
Hyojong Song, Yujin Kim, Gaeun Son, MiRang Park
SJR Q2Journal of Sexual Aggression

Given the rising incidence of digital sex crimes in South Korea, including upskirting and the dissemination of upskirting images and videos, this study aimed to examine whether two predictors, (1) pornography addiction and (2) maladaptive cognitions about the Internet (MCI), predict the perceived risk of recidivism among youth who were involved in digital sex offences. Using a cross-sectional survey of 324 South Korean youth on probation for digital sex offences, we investigated the role of porn

Are Cyberbullies the Same? An Examination of Cyberbully Typology Based on Offending Versatility and Group Differences in Motivation, Propensity, and Their Interplay
Hyojong Song, Yujin Kim, Seong-Sik Lee
SJR Q1Deviant Behavior

Using a South Korean college student sample, we examined whether cyberbullies could be classified into two or more groups. In addition to non-cyberbullies, we found two distinct cyberbully groups: solely-verbal-abusers and versatile-cyberbullies. We then examined whether cyberbullying motivations (cyberbullying victimization, association with cyberbullies), individual propensities (morality, self-control), and their interplay predicted group membership. Results showed that motivations and morali
