15Korean CRC has some distinct characteristics and survival patterns in terms of tumor distribution, stage, sex, and age. With time, survival outcomes have improved for both local and regional, but not distant, stage tumors.
OBJECTIVE: Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is a rare cause of thoracic myelopathy. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with the surgical outcome on the basis of preoperative clinical and radiological findings. METHODS: Data obtained in 26 patients whot underwent posterior decompression for thoracic myelopathy, caused by thoracic OLF, were analyzed retrospectively. Patient age, duration of symptoms, OLF type, preoperative and postoperative neurological status usin
BACKGROUND: Compared with conventional laparoscopic surgery, single-incision laparoscopic surgery produces better cosmetic benefits. The aim of this study was to investigate the learning curve for single-incision laparoscopic anterior resection (SILAR) for sigmoid colon cancer using multidimensional methods. STUDY DESIGN: From September 2009 through May 2014, one hundred and thirteen patients underwent SILAR for sigmoid colon cancer by a single surgeon at Severance Hospital. The learning curve w
Expression levels of 4 biomarkers correlated with pCR after preCRT for rectal cancer. A scoring system based on levels of biomarker expression showed good sensitivity and negative predictive value for pCR.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate factors affecting the difficulty of laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (L-TME), focusing on the pelvic anatomy. Methods: Seventy-four patients who underwent L-TME were prospectively enrolled. Tumor and patient factors, including magnetic resonance imaging-based pelvic measurements (obstetric conjugate, sacral length, sacral depth, interspinous distance, and intertuberous distance), were analyzed with respect to pelvic dissection time. Variable s
BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of (18)F-FDG PET in assessing tumor response after preoperative chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for rectal cancer. METHODS: Maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) was measured for 37 patients who underwent (18)F-FDG PET before and 4 weeks after completion of preoperative CRT. Pre-SUV, post-SUV, the difference between pre- and post-SUV (ΔSUV), and reduction rate (RR) were correlated with tumor response. RESULTS: A lower mean post-SUV and a higher
Primary cerebellar glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a rare tumor in adults that accounts for just 1% of all cases of GBM. Due to their rarity, cerebellar GBMs are not yet completely understood about the pathogenesis and the prognosis. Here, we present a case of GBM in a 69-year-old man. Neurologic examination revealed the presence of cerebellar signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 4.5 x 3.6 cm-sized, ill-defined, heterogeneously enhancing mass in the left cerebellum and two patchy hy
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare voiding and male sexual dysfunction between open and laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients (62 male and 35 female) who underwent open (n = 41) or laparoscopic (n = 56) surgery for rectal cancer were prospectively enrolled. Urine flowmetry, the international prostate symptom score, and the international index of erectile function were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: Voiding function score increased 1 month
BACKGROUND: Numerous molecular markers have been investigated to predict tumor response after preoperative chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of biomarkers for the prediction of tumor response after preoperative chemoradiotherapy. DESIGN & SETTING: Tumor specimens have been collected prospectively from 80 patients with rectal cancer who underwent curative resection at 8 weeks after completing preoperative chemoradiotherapy. MAIN OUTC
BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay (ATP-CRA)-guided neoadjuvant chemotherapy for increasing resectability in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were randomised into two groups: Group A was treated by conventional chemotherapy regimen and Group B was treated by chemotherapy regimen according to the ATP-CRA. Three chemotherapeutic agents (5-fluorouracil, oxaliplati
