15This study aims at reconstructing the phonological development of the Middle Chinese(MC) Yu(遇) and Liu(流) Rhyme Groups from Old Chinese(OC)to MC, and revealing their historical strata reflected on Sino-Korean. Although the two rhyme groups partly share the same OC origin, i.e., the Hou Group(侯部, *-o), the sound value of each rhyme group in MC is different from each other. It is significant to study the process of phonological changes of them, and is also significant to study why Sino-Korean refle
This study is designed to discuss some problems related with initials in Liu Xi's Shiming which is a collection of "paranomastic glosses (聲訓)" of the Eastern Han time. There have been several studies about the phonological system of the Shiming and I find some matters in the predecessors' studies in question. I study whether zhang series (章組) words, yi initial (以母) words, and xie initial (邪母) words preserved their phonological forms of Pre-Qin Chinese, and what types of consonant clusters as ini
This study is designed to discuss whether zhang series[章組] words, yi initial[以母] words, and xie initial[邪母] words, which we will simply address as “dental initials”, have been palatalized into affricates or fricatives in Baihutongyi and Fengsutongyi of the Eastern Han. South Coblin, in his work A Handbook of Eastern Han Sound Glosses initially asserted that Paranomastic Glosses in those documents reflected the palatalization of the initials in question. He believed that palatalization of the den
This study is designed to discuss whether zhang series[章組] words, yi initial[以母] words, and xie initial[邪母] words have been palatalized into affricates or fricatives in Zheng Xuan’s sound glosses of the Eastern Han. South Coblin in A Handbook of Eastern Han Sound Glosses, initially asserted that Zheng Xuan’s sound glosses reflected the palatalization of the initials in question according to their frequent contacts with jing series which were believed to be affricates[*TS-type] in Eastern Han. This study is designed to reconstruct a phonological system of finals in the Yinsheng rimes(陰聲韻) as reflected in the Sound Glosses and rimes of Guo Pu(郭璞), a scholar of the Jin Dynasty(晉代). His sound glosses are mostly of the direct phonetic notaions(直音法) and the fanqie spellings(反切注音法), which are believed to have represented one of phonological systems in the era between Old Chinese(OC) and Middle Chinese(MC). Unfortunately, however, both of the methods had revealed their own limitations. The s
This study is designed to reveal the types of “Initial Consonant Clusters”(“clusters” hereafter) as reflected in “the Shuowen Duruo[讀若] Glosses”. As the time span of Old Chinese[OC] covers presumably more than 1,000 years, we will have to assume that there had been a number of phonological changes within the period. This seems to be the case with the cluster system, which would reduce in its types and numbers over time. We have some evidence against varieties of clusters existing in the pre-Qin
There are only a few studies conducted on the phonological systems of transitional periods between Old Chinese [OC] and Middle Chinese [MC]. We mostly ascribe this to the fact that the materials which tell much about these periods are only sparsely found. Therefore, they provide us with only a handful of suggestions about the phonology of the periods. But we have some materials which guarantee us to establish a single phonological system of any specific stage standing between OC and MC. These he
In this study we reconstruct the phonological system of initials as reflected in the Sound Glosses of Guo Pu[郭璞] of the Jin Dynasty[晉代]. His Sound Glosses include the direct phonetic notaions[直音法] and the fanqie spellings[反切注音法]. We have examined more than 1,600 cases of his glosses to find out which stage his initial system was placed in between Old Chinese[OC] and Middle Chinese[MC]. The result of each predecessor is not showing exactly the unified trends with regard to the Guo’s initial syste
Phonology of Guo Pu[郭璞] in the Jin Dynasty[晉代] is known to reflect that of a certain transitional point placed between Old Chinese[OC] and Middle Chinese[MC]. The main goal of this study is to find out how far phonology of Yangsheng Rime[陽聲韻] has progressed from OC or how far it is away from MC in his time. We take up his massive number of sound glosses and some extant rimes as main materials of our study. His sound glosses are invested with the fanqie spellings[反切注音法] and the direct phonetic no
The purpose of this study is to establish the phonological system of finals[韻母] for each nasal-ending rime based on the Xu Miao[徐邈]’s sound glossess recorded in the Jingdian Shiwen[≪經典釋文≫]. As the Xu’s phonological system is situated in the transitional period between Old Chinese[OC] and Middle Chinese[MC], it is crucial to elucidate its relationship with both OC and MC in a coherent manner. This study presents its arguments based on OC and MC phonology as proposed by Zheng-Zhang Shang Fang. Add
This study is designed to reconstruct phonology of the Yinsheng rimes[陰聲韻] which is reflected in the Sound Glosses of Xu Miao[徐邈], a scholar of the East Jin[東晉]. His sound glosses are recorded in the Jingdian Shiwen[≪經典釋文≫], which was compiled by Lu De Ming[陸德明] along with the collections of semantic and sound glosses of a number of other exegetists. Xu’s sound glosses are composed of either the direct phonetic notaions[直音] or the fanqie spellings[反切注音]. It is significant to carry out this study
