Direct Oxidation of Liquid Fuels in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
Hyuk Kim, Seungdoo Park, John M. Vohs, Raymond J. Gorte
SJR Q1Journal of The Electrochemical Society

We report stable power generation, from the direct electrochemical oxidation, without reforming, of toluene, -decane, and synthetic diesel fuel at 973 K in a solid oxide fuel cell with a composite anode containing Cu and ceria. The liquid fuels were injected directly into the anode compartment and the performance for each fuel with 50% dilution was stable for a period of at least 12 h. Photographs of Cu-yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Ni-YSZ composites exposed to 50% toluene in at 973 K for

The Effect of MgO on the Viscosity of the CaO‐SiO2‐20 wt%Al2O3‐MgO Slag System
Hyuk Kim, Wan Ho Kim, Il Sohn, Dong Joon Min
SJR Q2steel research international

Abstract The viscosities of CaO‐SiO 2 ‐20 wt%Al 2 O 3 ‐MgO slags (CaO/SiO 2 = 1.0–1.2, wt%MgO = 5–13) were measured to estimate the effect of MgO on the viscous behaviour at elevated temperatures. The slag viscosity at 1773 K decreased with increasing MgO contents, which was typical of a basic oxide component at relatively low basicity (CaO/SiO 2 ) of 1.0. The FT‐IR spectroscopic analysis of the slag structure seems to verify this behaviour. However, an unexpected contradiction with the temperat

Effect of CaF2 and Li2O Additives on the Viscosity of CaO–SiO2–Na2O Slags
Hyuk Kim, Il Sohn
SJR Q2ISIJ InternationalOA

High aluminum containing steels react vigorously with silica-based mold fluxes to form alumina. The change in alumina content increases the viscosity and thus silica-based mold fluxes are compensated with significant amounts of Na2O, CaF2, and Li2O to ensure both lubrication and heat transfer control. Detailed viscosity studies using the rotating spindle method showed that additions of CaF2 up to 8 wt% in the CaO–SiO2–12wt%Na2O system at a constant CaO/SiO2 ratio of 0.8 decreases the viscosity b

Fabrication of Highly Porous Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia by Acid Leaching Nickel from a Nickel‐Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia Cermet
Hyuk Kim, Calvin da Rosa, Marta Boaro, John M. Vohs, Raymond J. Gorte
SJR Q1Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Porous Y 2 O 3 ‐stabilized ZrO 2 (YSZ) samples were synthesized by preparing NiO/YSZ composites by tape casting and calcining at 1800 K, reducing the NiO to nickel in H 2 at 973 K, and finally leaching the nickel out of the structure with 2.2 M HNO 3 at 353 K. Porous YSZ was prepared from NiO/YSZ composites containing 0, 20, 40, and 50 wt% NiO. Complete removal of the nickel was demonstrated by XRD, weight changes, and porosity increases. Porosities >75% could be achieved without structural c

Direct oxidation of sulfur-containing fuels in a solid oxide fuel cell
Hyuk Kim, John M. Vohs, Raymond J. Gorte
SJR Q1Chemical Communications

Solid-oxide fuel cells with Cu-ceria anodes are shown to provide stable power generation through the direct oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels having sulfur levels similar to that in gasoline and can be regenerated by steam after being poisoned with higher sulfur levels.

Semi-Active Suspension with Preview Using a Frequency-Shaped Performance Index
Hyuk Kim, Yong–San Yoon
SJR Q1Vehicle System Dynamics

SUMMARY The objective of this study is to develop a control law for a semi-active suspension for the purpose of ride quality improvement. The semi-active control law is determined by reproducing the control force of an optimally controlled active suspension while suppressing its damping coefficient variation. The performance index of the optimal control for the active suspension is modified to include frequency-shaping by use of Parseval's theorem, which allows us to de-emphasize the effects of

Pixel Circuit for Organic Light-Emitting Diode-on-Silicon Microdisplays Using the Source Follower Structure
Hyuk Kim, Bong‐Choon Kwak, Han‐Sin Lim, Oh‐Kyong Kwon
SJR Q3Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

In this paper, we propose a new pixel circuit for organic light-emitting diode-on-silicon (OLEDoS) microdisplays. The proposed pixel circuit is composed of only two metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and one capacitor in order to integrate the pixel circuit into the restricted pixel area (12.6×4.2 µm 2 ). The proposed pixel circuit has a source follower structure that can control an extremely low emission current. The measured results show that the maximum deviation in

A Kinetic Study on Carburization of Fe by Using 13CO Isotope Gas
Hyuk Kim, Dong Joon Min, Sung‐Mo Jung
SJR Q2ISIJ InternationalOA

The current investigations were undertaken to clarify the kinetics of dissociation of CO gas into the molten iron and the effects of impurities in Fe. The interfacial reaction rate of CO on liquid iron at 1823 K was measured by means of 13CO isotope exchange technique. Isotope exchange technique has been widely employed to evaluate the interfacial chemical reaction quantitatively. The experiments were carried out for the compositions of (0.002–3.31 mass%) of carbon, (0.002–0.11 mass%) of oxygen,

Effect of bias application to plasma density in weakly magnetized inductively coupled plasma
Hyuk Kim, Woohyun Lee, Wanjae Park, Ki‐Woong Whang
SJR Q2Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A Vacuum Surfaces and Films

Independent control of the ion flux and energy can be achieved in a dual frequency inductively coupled plasma (ICP) system. Typically, the plasma density is controlled by the high-frequency antenna radio-frequency (RF) power and the ion energy is controlled by the low-frequency bias RF power. Increasing the bias power has been known to cause a decrease in the plasma density in capacitively coupled discharge systems as well as in ICP systems. However, an applied axial magnetic field was found to

Hyuk Kim, Jee-Hwan Ryu
SJR Q4Journal of Institute of Control Robotics and SystemsOA

In this paper, we investigate the effect of asynchronous haptic and video feedback on the performance of teleoperation. To analyze the effect, a tele-manipulation experiment is specially designed, which operator moves square objects from one place to another place by using master/slave telerobotic system. Task completion time and total number of falling of the object are used for evaluating the performance. Subjective study was conducted with 10 subjects in 16 different combinations of video and
