The prevalence of obesity has consistently increased worldwide, and many obesity-related diseases are emerging as major health problems. Body mass index (BMI) is used to define obesity and is highly correlated with body fat mass. Moreover, obesity-related morbidities increase linearly with the increase in BMI. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity defined overweight as a BMI ≥23 kg/m2 and obesity as a BMI ≥25 kg/m2, based on a significant increase in obesity-related d

SJR Q1The American Journal of Gastroenterology

NAFLD was associated with risk for components of MetS, and the association was stronger in non-obese than in obese individuals, especially in women. Therefore, NAFLD should be considered a meaningful predictor of metabolic diseases in the non-obese population.

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract The effect of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area on metabolic syndrome (MS) has been debated. We aimed to evaluate the effects of VAT and SAT on the incidence of MS and its components in a large and apparently healthy Asian population. We performed a longitudinal cohort study of 1,964 subjects who received health screenings over a 5-year follow-up period; 317 incidents of MS (16.1%) were observed during a median follow-up of 4.5 years. The VAT area

SJR Q2BMC GastroenterologyOA

BACKGROUND: The association between low serum testosterone levels, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and metabolic syndrome is now well known. However, the relationship between hepatic steatosis and serum testosterone levels has not been extensively studied. Our aim was to investigate the association of serum total testosterone levels with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), adjusting for the influence of VAT and insulin resistance. METHODS: This study is a retrospective observational cross-s

SJR Q2Healthcare Informatics ResearchOA

OBJECTIVE: Smart hospitals involve the application of recent information and communications technology (ICT) innovations to medical services; however, the concept of a smart hospital has not been rigorously defined. In this study, we aimed to derive the definition and service types of smart hospitals and investigate cases of each type. METHODS: A literature review was conducted regarding the background and technical characteristics of smart hospitals. On this basis, we conducted a focus group in

This study tried to investigate the effects of number of medications and age on antihypertensive medication adherence in a real-world setting using a nationwide representative cohort. We obtained data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) of Korea, which is a sample of 2.2% (N = 1,048,061) of total population (N = 46,605,433). Patients aged 20 years or older (N = 150,550) who took antihypertensive medications for at least 1 year were selected. Medication pos

High triglyceride-glucose index is associated with subclinical cerebral small vessel disease in a healthy population: a cross-sectional study

SJR Q1Cardiovascular DiabetologyOA

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a marker of insulin resistance (IR) and has been associated with various metabolic syndromes, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases. However, limited information is available regarding its association with subclinical cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). In this study, we evaluated the relationship between the TyG index and cSVD, including silent brain infarcts (SBIs) and white matter hyperintensity (WMH). METHODS: We assessed

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the correlation between abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults after adjusting for the effects of visceral adipose tissue (VAT). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The SAT/VAT ratio (SVR) was calculated using abdominal computed tomography in 2,655 subjects. We used regression analyses to assess whether the SVR predicted MetS. RESULTS: For both sexes, the prevalence of elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL, and elev

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the association between being underweight and having cardiovascular disease in the general population. We investigated the incidence of stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and all-cause mortality according to detailed underweight categories in a large population cohort. METHODS: We included 4 164 364 individuals who underwent a health examination that was conducted as part of the Korean National Health Insurance Service between January 2009 and December 201

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammatory marker based on the composition ratio of blood cell counts. In this study, we evaluated the association between the SII and cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) in health check-up participants. We evaluated participants from our health check-up registry between 2006 and 2013. The SII was calculated using the following formula: SII = (platelet count × neutrophil count)/lymphocyte count. cSVD was assessed by considering white matter

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Although previous studies have shown that milk intake has some protective effects on metabolic syndrome (MS), there are few data on the relation between MS and milk consumption in Korean. To evaluate the association between milk intake frequency and MS, 4,890 subjects (2,052 men and 2,838 women) were included in the analysis, based on the national data from representative random sample of the third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES III) in 2005. We conducted both un

Association between serum uric acid level and bone mineral density in men more than 50 years of age

SJR Q1Frontiers in EndocrinologyOA

Background: The results of previous studies on the association between serum uric acid levels and bone mineral density and the risk of osteoporosis are controversial. Fat free mass (FFM) is more strongly associated with bone mineral density (BMD) than it is with body fat mass (BFM). Skeletal muscle mass is assumed to contribute indirectly to the relationship between serum uric acid levels and BMD. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between serum uric acid levels and BMD and abnormal

Glomerular hyperfiltration is recognized as an early marker of progressive kidney dysfunction in the obese population. This study aimed to identify the relationship between glomerular hyperfiltration and body fat distribution measured by computed tomography (CT) in healthy Korean adults. The study population included individuals aged 20-64 years who went a routine health check-up including an abdominal CT scan. We selected 4,378 individuals without diabetes and hypertension.
