Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Making of Japanese Postwar Architecture
Hyunjung Cho
SJR Q3Journal of Architectural EducationOA

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, designed by Japanese architect Kenzō Tange, is an eloquent visual account of the vexed nature of postwar Japan's contested history. It played an important role in the contentious debates over postwar internationalism and an emerging Japanese nationalism among Japanese architects and critics, and catalyzed the development of a new "non-Western" modern architecture.

Competing futures: War narratives in postwar Japanese architecture, 1945-1970
Hyunjung Cho
University of Southern California Digital LibraryOA

This dissertation examines the trajectory of postwar Japanese architecture from 1945 to 1970 as a process of overcoming the nation?s war legacy. The task of overcoming the war was not restricted to the physical recovery from wartime destruction and postwar ruins but also included the psychological and symbolic process of coming to terms with the recurring memories of this troubled past. Drawing on memory and trauma studies which have emerged as a crucial element in narrating postwar history, thi

Effects of Wet-Pressing and Cross-Linking on the Tensile Properties of Carbon Nanotube Fibers
Hyunjung Cho, Jinwoo Lee, Haemin Lee, Sung‐Hyun Lee, Junbeom Park, Cheol-Hun Lee, Kun‐Hong Lee
SJR Q2MaterialsOA

To increase the strength of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers (CNTFs), the mean size of voids between bundles of CNTs was reduced by wet-pressing, and the CNTs were cross-linked. Separate and simultaneous physical (roller pressing) and chemical methods (cross-linking) were tested to confirm each method's effects on the CNTF strength. By reducing the fraction of pores, roller pressing decreased the cross-sectional area from 160 μm² to 66 μm² and increased the average load-at-break from 2.83 ± 0.25 cN

Metabolism and Cold War architecture
Hyunjung Cho, Chunghoon Shin
SJR Q1The Journal of Architecture

In May, 1960, the Metabolist Group made a stunning debut at the World Design Conference held in Tokyo by presenting visionary proposals for future cities. Metabolism has long been understood within what Manfredo Tafuri and Francesco Dal Co have called an ‘international concept of utopia’ of the 1960s. Metabolism's vision of the future, however, does not neatly fit into a singular category of modernist utopia. For Japanese architects who witnessed the devastation of war in their teens, it seemed

Kenzō Tange's A Plan for Tokyo, 1960 : a plan for urban mobility
Hyunjung Cho
SJR Q3Architectural Research Quarterly

This essay examines Kenzō Tange's visionary urban scheme, A Plan for Tokyo, 1960: Toward a Structural Reorganization (1961), in terms of its mobility rather than its much-discussed monumentality. The existing studies of this plan was too im-mersed in its unprecedented megalomaniac scale to pay sufficient attention to the fact that it was a complex design for urban mobility. While the issues of scale and speed might seem to be separate, in fact they are inextricably interconnected since the incre

Estimation of degree of polymerization of poly-acrylonitrile-grafted carbon nanotubes using Guinier plot of small angle x-ray scattering
Hyunjung Cho, Kyeong Sik Jin, Jaegeun Lee, Kun‐Hong Lee
SJR Q2Nanotechnology

Abstract Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to estimate the degree of polymerization of polymer-grafted carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized using a ‘grafting from’ method. This analysis characterizes the grafted polymer chains without cleaving them from CNTs, and provides reliable data that can complement conventional methods such as thermogravimetric analysis or transmittance electron microscopy. Acrylonitrile was polymerized from the surface of the CNTs by using redox initiation to p

Static Tactile Sensing Based on Electrospun Piezoelectric Nanofiber Membrane
Hyunjung Cho, Taejoon Kouh
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Here, a static tactile sensing scheme based on a piezoelectric nanofiber membrane, prepared via the electrospinning method, is presented. When the nanofiber membrane is kept under a constant vibration, an external contact onto the membrane will attenuate its vibration. By monitoring this change in the oscillation amplitude due to the physical contact via the piezoelectrically coupled voltage from the nanofiber membrane, the strength and duration of the static contact can be determined. The proof

Combined effect of mass and stiffness on the dynamics of a double-layered microcantilever
Hyunjung Cho, Yun‐Hee Park, Taejoon Kouh
SJR Q2Applied Physics Express

The combined effect of the mass and stiffness on a double-layered microcantilever has been studied. The resonance frequency of a silicon microcantilever with thin nickel film deposited on top is monitored as a function of the film thickness and examined based on a bi-layer cantilever model. These reveal that both mass and stiffness of the top layer on the cantilever structure affect the rate of the frequency change and the approximated expression for the thickness, where the frequency change dev

Smallness in Japanese Houses: From Postwar to Post-postwar Architecture
Hyunjung Cho
Seoul National University Open Repository (Seoul National University)

Interest in small houses has been one of the most striking features of Japanese architecture since the 1990s. Widely considered a uniquely Japanese phenomenon, small houses have proved to be a successful brand of contemporary Japanese architecture. Their radically small size, particularly when compared with houses in the West, affirms the image of small Japan, a stereotype mutually produced by Japan and the West. In this article, I interpret this smallness neither as essential to Japanese cultur
