Comparison of injectate spread and nerve involvement between retrolaminar and erector spinae plane blocks in the thoracic region: a cadaveric study

SJR Q1AnaesthesiaOA

Although different injection locations for retrolaminar and erector spinae plane blocks have been described, the two procedures have a similar anatomical basis. In this cadaveric study we compared anatomical spread of dye in the thoracic region following these two procedures. Following randomisation, 10 retrolaminar blocks and 10 erector spinae plane blocks were performed on the left or right sides of 10 unembalmed cadavers. For each block, 20 ml of dye solution was injected at the T5 level. The

The paravertebral spread that occurs after erector spinae plane block may be volume-dependent. This cadaveric study was undertaken to compare the extent of paravertebral spread with erector spinae plane block using different dye volumes. After randomization, twelve erector spinae plane blocks were performed bilaterally with either 10 ml or 30 ml of dye at the level of T5 in seven unembalmed cadavers except for two cases of unexpected pleural puncture using the 10 ml injection. SJR Q1Clinical AnatomyOA

The facial artery is the major vessel supplying blood to the face so its location and course are very important for the safe manipulation of both surgical and non-surgical interventions. This study documents current anatomical information about the facial artery and its tributaries. The terminology of the facial artery tributaries was revisited with reference to the Terminologica Anatomica and novel nomenclature was suggested with anatomical features. The tributaries to the lower lip (inferior l

Anatomy of the thoracic paravertebral space: 3D micro-CT findings and their clinical implications for nerve blockade

SJR Q1Regional Anesthesia & Pain MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: A precise anatomical understanding of the thoracic paravertebral space (TPVS) is essential to understanding how an injection outside this space can result in paravertebral spread. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the three-dimensional (3D) structures of the TPVS and adjacent tissues using micro-CT, and investigate the potential routes for nerve blockade in this area. METHODS: Eleven embalmed cadavers were used in this study. Micro-CT images of the TPVS were acquired after phosphotungst

Sihler staining study of anastomosis between the facial and trigeminal nerves in the ocular area and its clinical implications
Hun‐Mu Yang, Sung‐Yoon Won, Hee‐Jin Kim, Kyung‐Seok Hu
SJR Q1Muscle & NerveOA

INTRODUCTION: The trigeminal nerve (CN V) supplies mostly sensory innervation to the face, and the facial nerve (CN VII) conveys primarily motor fibers. The aim of this study was to elucidate their distributions and anastomoses. METHODS: Fourteen specimens of hemisectioned faces were gathered from human cadavers and stained with Sihler staining. RESULTS: The temporal (Tbr), zygomatic (Zbr), and buccal (Bbr) branches of CN VII formed trigeminofacial anastomoses in the ocular area. Communications

Three-dimensional structure of the orbicularis retaining ligament: an anatomical study using micro-computed tomography

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The orbicularis retaining ligament (ORL) is an important structure for maintaining the eyelid and cheek skin and contouring the characteristic facial appearance. However, the ORL is a delicate structure that is easily damaged in manual dissection. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the ORL using a micro-computed tomography (mCT) with phosphotungstic acid (PTA) preparation for the acquisition of its three-dimensional information non-destructively. Twenty-two specimens were obtained f

SJR Q1Pain Research and ManagementOA

Background: A quadratus lumborum (QL) block is an abdominal truncal block technique that primarily provides analgesia and anaesthesia to the abdominal wall. This cadaveric study was undertaken to compare the dye spread between different needle approaches for ultrasound-guided QL blocks in soft-embalmed cadavers. Methods: After randomization, an experienced anesthesiologist performed two lateral, three posterior, and five alternative QL blocks on the left or right sides of five cadavers. The targ

Revisiting the Topographic Anatomy of the Marginal Mandibular Branch of Facial Nerve Relating to the Surgical Approach

SJR Q1Aesthetic Surgery JournalOA

BACKGROUND: The marginal mandibular branch (Mbr) of the facial nerve is vulnerable to damage during rhytidoplasty, surgical reduction of the mandibular angle, parotidectomy, and excision of the submandibular gland. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to map the Mbr and determine the relationship between the number of Mbr offshoots and the course of the Mbr. METHODS: The Mbr was examined in 29 hemifaces from 12 embalmed and 4 fresh cadavers (10 males, 6 females; mean age, 73.7 years). RESULTS: The Mbr

SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial SurgeryOA

The infraorbital nerve (ION) is a cardinal cutaneous nerve that provides general sensation to the mid face. Its twigs are vulnerable to iatrogenic damage during medical and dental manipulations. The aims of this study were to elucidate the distribution pattern of the ION and thus help to prevent nerve damage during medical procedures and to enable accurate prognostic evaluation where complications do occur. This was achieved by treating 7 human hemifaces with the Sihler modified staining protoco
