15BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates can adversely affect fracture-healing because they inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption. It is unclear whether bisphosphonates can be initiated safely for patients who have sustained an acute distal radial fracture. The purpose of this randomized study was to determine whether the early use of bisphosphonate affects healing and outcomes of osteoporotic distal radial fractures treated with volar locking plate fixation. METHODS: Fifty women older than fifty years of age
BACKGROUND: Although osteoporosis is being evaluated and treated increasingly in elderly patients with fragility fractures, some studies have suggested that physicians may be missing important opportunities, especially in patients with nonvertebral fractures. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether specialists responsible for treating fractures at various locations have different propensities for evaluating and treating osteoporosis after a fracture in female patients over the

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of intra-articular dorsal wedge osteotomy and absorbable pin fixation for the treatment of Freiberg disease. METHODS: From January of 1997, to July of 2003, 12 patients with symptomatic Freiberg disease had intra-articular dorsal wedge osteotomy through the affected metatarsal head fixed with absorbable polyglycolide pins. All 12 patients were women with an average age of 36 (range 16 to 59) years. The Smillie stage of necrosis ra
BACKGROUND: Polydactyly is one of the most common congenital differences that affect the hand. It has various anatomic and morphologic features. Although the Wassel classification has been used widely for radial polydactyly, it is based on the anatomic level of duplication and has some limitations in describing the concrete morphology of the duplication. The authors devised a new classification system based on the anatomic pattern of duplication to facilitate surgical correction of the deformity
BACKGROUND: Patient-centered care requires physicians to respond to patients' preferences, including their preferences regarding treatment decision-making. The authors surveyed patients to determine their preoperative preferences and their retrospectively perceived levels of involvement in decision-making for carpal tunnel release, and they attempted to identify factors that affect patient preferences and experiences. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients who underwent carpal tunnel release for carpal

Strain sensors capable of monitoring complex human motions are highly desirable for the development of wearable electronic devices and healthcare monitoring systems. Excellent sensitivity and a wide working range of the sensor material are important requirements for distinguishing dynamic human motion. In this study, a highly stretchable strain sensor was fabricated via inkjet printing of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films on a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The sensor
Women with carpal tunnel syndrome report that subjective symptom severity is the most important reason for undergoing surgery. Understanding this and other patient concerns may help physicians during patient-oriented consultation and decision-making. In particular, recommendations for carpal tunnel release on the basis of symptoms are reasonable from the perspective of the patient who has carpal tunnel syndrome without a known cause.
