15Greater mid-BA angulation may enhance lateral plaque formation, causing lateral and middle PIs, whereas greater BA-VA angulation may enhance posterior plaque formation, causing paramedian or caudal PIs.
BACKGROUND: Clinical and radiological characteristics of middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction may differ according to the location of occlusion. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the difference between proximal and distal symptomatic MCA occlusion (MCAO) in patients with ischemic stroke. The factors associated with the imaging characteristics were also analyzed. METHODS: Patients with ischemic stroke due to MCAO were consecutively enrolled. The location of MCAO was determined by the ratio of the le
Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) released from gram-negative bacteria harbor diverse molecules to communicate with host cells. In this study, we evaluated the OMVs of periodontal pathogens for their effects on the activation of dendritic cells and CD4+ T cell differentiation. OMVs of <i>Porphyromonas gingivalis</i> ATCC 33277, <i>Treponema denticola</i> ATCC 33521, and <i>Tannerella forsythia</i> ATCC 43037 ('red complex' pathogens) were isolated by density gradient ultracentrifugation.
Uric acid (UA) has been known to be a neuroprotective antioxidant because of its free radical scavenger activity. We studied the influence of UA in patients with acute ischemic stroke after thrombolytic therapy. Two hundred eighteen consecutive patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis were included in this analysis. We analyzed the relationship between serum UA levels obtained at the emergency department and clinical outcomes. Early improvement and excellent functional outcomes were measur
Stem cell therapy (SCT) has been proposed for the treatment of neurological disorders. Although there is insufficient clinical evidence to support its efficacy, unproven SCTs are being performed worldwide. In this study, we investigated the perspectives and expectations of chronic ischemic stroke patients and physicians about SCTs. A total of 250 chronic ischemic stroke patients were interviewed at 4 hospitals. Structured open and closed questions about SCT for chronic stroke were asked by train
BACKGROUND: White matter lesions (WMLs) are a common finding in stroke patients, and the most important risk factors are old age and hypertension. Although many studies have described the association between WMLs and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) parameters in healthy subjects and hypertensive patients, little is known about the association in hypertensive ischemic stroke patients. METHODS: From July 2009 to June 2012, 169 consecutive hypertensive noncardioembolic ischemic stroke p
Background: The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) is a quantitative measure of ALS-related physical deficit with established reliability and validity in prospective clinical research. This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of the Korean version of ALSFRS-R (K-ALSFRS-R). Methods: The subjects of the study were 51 patients with ALS diagnosed on the basis of El Escorial criteria. The patients were evaluated by one rater using K-ALSFRS-R, Norris
Asymptomatic BA plaque location was associated with BA convexity and lateral mid-BA angle. The anteriorly and posteriorly located BA plaques may extend to the lateral walls as the plaque burden increases.
BACKGROUND: It is important to recognize stroke in the general public. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting knowledge of stroke warning signs (SWSs) according to age group in the Korean population. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study. Using data from the Korean Community Health Survey conducted in Korea in 2017, 198 403 subjects were analyzed. Knowledge about SWSs was assessed by face-to-face interviews using structured close-ended questionnaires
RATIONALE: Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is rare condition characterized by painful ophthalmoplegia that usually responds well to corticosteroid. About a half of THS patients experience recurrence within intervals of months to years from initial presentation. Recurrence is more common in younger patients, and can be ipsilateral, contralateral, or bilateral. Cyclosporine, azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil, infliximab, and radiotherapy can be considered as second-line treatment. Howev
Background and Purpose It has been shown that erythropoietin is neuroprotective in animalmodels of neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The aim ofthis study was to determine the safety and feasibility of repetitive high-dose recombinant humanerythropoietin (rhEPO) therapy in ALS patients. Methods Two consecutive studies were conducted. We first recruited 26 subjects for an initialsingle-arm safety study. After a lead-in period of 3 months to assess the diseas
