Inhibition of Candida albicans Biofilm Formation and Attenuation of Its Virulence by Liriope muscari
Jeong-Hoon Lee, Hyunchan Song, Ki‐Young Kim
SJR Q1AntibioticsOA

(1) Background: Although Candida albicans accounts for the majority of fungal infections, therapeutic options are limited and require alternative antifungal agents with new targets; (2) Methods: A biofilm formation assay with RPMI1640 medium was performed with Liriope muscari extract. A combination antifungal assay, dimorphic transition assay, and adhesion assay were performed under the biofilm formation condition to determine the anti-biofilm formation effect. qRT-PCR analysis was accomplished

Antibacterial activity of pimaric acid against the causative agent of American foulbrood, Paenibacillus larvae
Hyunchan Song, Jaegoo Kim, Yu‐Kyong Shin, Ki‐Young Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Apicultural Research

The number of bees has decreased drastically partly due to bacterial pathogens like Paenibacillus larvae that cause American foulbrood disease. The recent emergence of pathogenic resistant strains makes it more difficult to, successfully, treat infections. Research on alternative antibacterial agents from naturally occurring plants that also have low toxicity levels is critical to address the issue of Paenibacillus larvae in bee colonies. Five compounds were screened with a minimal inhibitory co

Anti-Parasitic Activity of Lespedeza cuneata Extract on Causative Agent of Nosemosis Type C, Nosema ceranae

Journal of Apiculture

Although honeybees (Apis mellifera) are crucial for maintenance of the ecosystem, population of honeybee has been steadily decreasing due to diseases including nosemosis. Nosemosis is a disease caused by Nosema ceranae and is now considered as a major threat to honeybees. N. ceranae is a microsporidian that stays in form of spore even before the infection, which makes it harder to control than other pathogens. People are now aware of this parasite, however, cure and preventive candidates for nos

Honokiol as an Effective Antimicrobial Compound against Causative Agent of American foulbrood, Paenibacillus larvae
Hyunchan Song, Ki‐Young Kim
Journal of Apiculture

Recently, number of honeybees (Apis mellifera) has visibly decreased because they are vulnerable to some diseases like American foulbrood disease. American foulbrood disease, which is caused by Paenibacillus larvae, is emerged as great cause of decrease in number of honeybees. After antibiotic-resistant strain emerged, it is now more difficult to treat those pathogens successfully. Researches on finding alternative antibacterial compound are ongoing. In this study, we examined the antibacterial

Regulation of mRNA Expression in Head and Gut of Apis mellifera after Nosema ceranae Infection
Hyunchan Song, Hye‐Kyung Kim, Ki‐Young Kim
Journal of Apiculture

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) have been threatened by diseases and their numbers have been noticeably declining. Nosemosis, a disease caused by Nosema ceranae, is now a leading threat to honeybees. N. ceranae is a microsporidian that forms a spore before it infects the host, which makes it especially difficult to control compared to other pathogens. Because the awareness of nosemosis risk increased within decades, N. ceranae has been studied as a pathogen. Some studies showed the up/down-regulation

The Use of Rutin Extract as a Nosemosis Prevention Caused by Nosema ceranae
Hyunchan Song, Hye‐Kyung Kim, Ki‐Young Kim
Journal of Apiculture

Nosema ceranae is a causative agent of nosemosis. It has been considered as a great threat to honeybees for some decade. We performed an experiment on antiparasitic activity of rutin using Trichoplusia ni cell line, BTI-TN5B1-4, which was used as a substitute for stable honeybee cell line. Without addition of any parasite, BTI-TN5B1-4 cells had consistent size with round shape. However, when spores of N. ceranae were treated on BTI-TN5B1-4, some cells exhibited its nosemosis with abnormally enla

Prevention of Nosema Infection in Trichoplusia ni Cell Line Using Akebia quinata Extract
Hyunchan Song, Hye‐Kyung Kim, Ki‐Young Kim
Journal of Apiculture

Nosemosis is a honeybee ( Apis mellifera) disease resulting from the intake of Nosema ceranae, which recently became a major threat to honeybees. N. ceranae is a microsporidian, which acts like a parasite and remains as a spore until the infection, resulting in high management difficulty. Until today, cure and preventative candidates are barely established. In this study, the preventive activity of Akebia quinata extract against nosemosis was done using Trichoplusia ni cell line, BTI-TN5B1-4, as

Association of lifestyle, physiological factors, and body composition with the facial skin microbiota in acne vulgaris
Yun Ji Lee, Hyunchan Song, Kiyoung Kim
SJR Q1Frontiers in MedicineOA

Introduction: The skin microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health and overall well-being. The composition of this microbial community is influenced by various host factors, including lifestyle habits, physiological parameters, and body composition. Methods: 1,053 participants were included in this study. The composition of the skin microbiota was determined by analysing facial skin microbiome collection, obtained after the consent of participants. Also, physical characteristics o

The Antifungal Activity of Apple Cider Vinegar Against Dermatophytes and Its Effects on Human Keratinocytes
Hyeyoung Kim, Hyunchan Song, Doyeon Kim, MinJi Lee, Yeo-jin Kim, Ki-Young Kim
SJR Q3Journal of Natural RemediesOA

Background: Dermatophytes are a widespread fungal infection with growing concerns of antifungal resistance. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a traditional remedy known for its antimicrobial properties, but its efficacy against specific dermatophytes and its safety on host cells are not yet well-characterised. Methods: In this study, the in vitro antifungal activity of ACV was evaluated against six clinically relevant dermatophyte species by measuring the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The l
