15There is a growing trend to perform off-bypass surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) because it is perceived to be safer and more effective than the Cox-Maze procedure with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) support. In this systematic review, we compared three minimally invasive stand-alone surgical ablation procedures for AF: the endocardial Cox-Maze procedure, epicardial surgical ablation and a hybrid epicardial surgical and catheter-based endocardial ablation procedure (hybrid procedure).
We aimed to assess the gender-specific associations between psychological factors and socioeconomic status (SES) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults. We examined 4,689 Korean adults aged 20-79 years who participated in the 2013 Korean National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey. With regard to SES, occupation status (none, manual, and nonmanual), marital status (single, married, divorced, and widowed), and psychological factors (detection of stress, depressive symptoms, and suici
The present study showed that postoperative long-term survival and event-free survival in patients with active infective endocarditis of the native mitral valve were not statistically significantly different regardless of whether patients underwent MVP or MVR.
BACKGROUND: Although the prevention of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) catheter-related infection is crucial, scientific evidence regarding best practices are still lacking. METHODS: We conducted an uncontrolled before-and-after study to test whether the introduction of disinfection with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) of the exposed circuits and hub in patients treated with ECMO would affect the rate of blood stream infection (BSI) and microbial colon
For most patients who present with ventricular septal defects (VSDs) in adulthood, the major concern is not the mortality or morbidity associated with repair surgery, but rather cosmetic problems arising from surgical scarring as a result of median sternotomy. From March 2005 to August 2008, nine patients (M:F=1:8) underwent repair of congenital VSD using right (n=7) or left (n=2) anterolateral minithoracotomy. We compared the perioperative data of these patients with that of the patients (n=8)
OBJECTIVE: Since the late 1980s, surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has been one of the most effective means of curing this arrhythmia. However, about 20% of patients who underwent maze procedures have shown recurrence of AF during the follow-up periods. The aim of this study is to evaluate our result of maze procedures in last decade and to analyze the risk factors of maze failure. METHODS: Between July 1997 and July 2007, 560 consecutive patients underwent maze procedures for AF by
Improvement in quality of life (QoL) is a primary treatment goal for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The current study aimed to quantify improvement in the health status of PAD patients following peripheral revascularization using the peripheral artery questionnaire (PAQ) and ankle-brachial index (ABI), and to evaluate possible correlation between the two methods. The PAQ and ABI were assessed in 149 symptomatic PAD patients before, and three months after peripheral revasculariz
This risk prediction model using a scoring system specific to heart valve surgery was developed from the KHVSR database. The risk prediction model showed that operative mortality could be predicted well in a Korean cohort.
BACKGROUND: Preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD) is a conservation strategy for reducing allogenic blood transfusion (ABT) during minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS). We aimed to evaluate the effects of PABD on the frequency of ABT and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing MICS. METHODS: We enrolled 113 patients (47.8±13.1 years, 50 men) undergoing MICS without preoperative anemia (hemoglobin >11 g/dL) between 2014 and 2017. Of these patients, 69 (the PABD group) donated autolo
INTRODUCTION: Pump-controlled retrograde trial off has recently been introduced as an effective method for weaning from veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in pediatric patients. However, studies on pump-controlled retrograde trial off in adults are still lacking. Thus, this study aimed to examine the outcomes of pump-controlled retrograde trial off for weaning from veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in adult patients. METHODS: Between January 2018 and July 2019, 87
Two cases of catheter entrapment in the mitral valve, which is a rare complication of pulmonary vein isolation, were successfully treated via robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery.
Human brucellosis is a rare zoonosis in East Asia. A case of brucella endocarditis in a 59-year-old farmer who had mild rheumatic mitral stenosis is presented. Excision of the mitral valve with associated vegetation was performed and a mechanical valve was substituted. Antibiotic treatment with doxycycline, rifampicin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole was continued for 6 months. After 18 months of follow-up, the patient had no symptoms and no signs of relapse.
Sarcopenia is an objective marker of poor outcome following cardiac surgery through median sternotomy. However, the clinical impact of sarcopenia after minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) has not been well established. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sarcopenia on the early and late outcomes following MICS. We retrospectively examined 1248 patients who underwent MICS via right mini-thoracotomy or upper sternotomy between February 2009 and April 2020. Patients older than 65 yea
