15BACKGROUND: It is suggested that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can produce lasting changes in corticospinal excitability and can potentially be used for the treatment of neuropathic pain. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying the effects of tDCS are unknown. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the underlying neural mechanisms of tDCS for chronic pain relief using [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([(18)F]FDG-PET). METHODS: Sixteen patients with neuropathic pai
Magnetic stimulation of the QF muscle produced less pain at the same level of isometric peak torque than did transcutaneous NMES. Magnetic stimulation is a potential alternative to transcutaneous NMES, especially for persons with intact or residual sensory function.
BACKGROUND: Muscle strength measurements using hand-held dynamometry (HHD) can be affected by the inadequate strength of the tester and lack of stabilization of the participants and the device. A portable HHD anchoring system was designed that enabled the measurement of isometric knee extensor muscle strength in a supine position. This can be used with individuals who are unable to assume the sitting position required for the measurement of knee extensor strength in conventional isokinetic dynam
Direct current stimulation (DCS) has been known as a noninvasive method for modulating neural activity. We estimated the effects of noninvasive cutaneous DCS applied to the cervical region on corticospinal excitability and segmental sensorimotor excitability. The motor-evoked potential amplitudes and the parameters of the Hoffmann reflex were measured before, immediately after, 1 h after, and 2 h after DCS. In this study, we found that noninvasive cervical application of DCS could increase the m
PWD experienced more barriers in accessing medical services despite needing services more frequently than did those in the GP group. Compared to barriers faced by the GP, barriers for PWD were environmental rather than personal, which indicates the need for social policies to remove or reduce barriers and improve access to care. Implications for Rehabilitation Health Care Environment People with disabilities are likely to have difficulty in accessing medical services. Barriers are associated wit
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the length of hospital stay (LOS) after stroke using the database of the Korean Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service. METHODS: We matched the data of patients admitted for ischemic stroke onset within 7 days in the Departments of Neurology of 12 hospitals to the data from the database of the Korean Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service. We recruited 3,839 patients who were hospitalized between January 2011 and December 2011, had a previous modified Rankin
BACKGROUND: Lower extremity joint contractures have negative effects on gait in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Thus, contracture prevention is essential for maintaining a patient's functional ability and an acceptable quality of life. This study investigated hip flexion (HF), knee flexion (KF), and ankle joint plantar flexion (APF) contractures among male patients with DMD, based on the patients' ambulatory status. Differences in major joint contractures, based on passive stret
The therapeutic trial of a fluoroscopic interlaminar ESI was effective for axial LBP without significant outcome predictors.
OBJECTIVES: The functional oral intake scale (FOIS), developed for adults based on the categories of consumable food has been adapted for infants. A FOIS for children is necessary as oral motor development continues after 1 year of age. This study proposed a FOIS for children and investigated the reliability and validity of the scale. METHODS: We adapted the original FOIS into a scale for children by removing 2 item levels to generate a 5-point scale. This retrospective study included 194 childr
This study aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) for infants. Infants (age, <1 year) who underwent a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were included in this retrospective study. Their nutrition records at the time of the VFSS were separately evaluated by two raters using the five-point FOIS for infants. Categorical swallowing and aspiration impairment scale data were also obtained from the VFSS. The inter-rater reliability of the FOI
