15BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the treatment of choice for benign gallbladder disease. Gallbladder cancers have been found following LC. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the survival outcome and prognosis of incidental gallbladder cancer diagnosed after LC. METHODS: From January 2002 to December 2007, 3,145 patients underwent LC at the Department of Surgery, Korea University Medical Center. Of these, 33 patients (1.05%) were diagnosed with gallbladder cancer after L
INTRODUCTION: Single port laparoscopic surgery has come to the forefront of minimally invasive surgery. For those familiar with conventional techniques, however, this type of operation demands a different type of eye/hand coordination and involves unfamiliar working instruments. Herein, the authors describe the learning curve and the clinical outcomes of single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy for 150 consecutive patients with benign gallbladder disease. METHOD: All patients underwent single po
Experienced laparoscopic surgeons can safely perform cholecystectomy using conventional and curved laparoscopic instruments in selected patients. We recommend that you consider performing conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy or that you use additional retraction devices for patients with a higher body mass index or acute cholecystitis.
INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy has become the standard treatment of choice for pancreatic tail cystic and solid tumors when technically feasible. Technological advances have led to the development of single-port laparoscopic surgery, a safe alternative procedure. We present our experiences with single-port laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records and compared clinical outcomes in 40 patients diagnosed with a pancrea
BACKGROUND: Single-port laparoscopic approaches are well established in the field of minimally invasive surgery; however, single-port laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (SPLDP) has not been evaluated in a large number of distal pancreatic neoplasms. We aimed to compare single-port laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy outcomes with conventional laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 101 patients who underwent SPLDP (n = 26) or
The levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) are proportionate to injury; it is the most commonly used quantitative marker in surgical studies. Cytokines and the acute-phase response play an important role in controlling the human immune system. The objective of this study was to compare the systemic acute cytokine response and clinical outcomes of conventional laparoscopic and single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We compared patients who underwent single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (the single
The study revealed that the incidence of pancreatic fistula was similar in both the continuous and interrupted suture groups of pancreaticojejunostomy. Continuous suture group had shorter operative time, less damage, fewer knots and less tension than interrupted sutures. Therefore, we concluded that the continuous suture method is feasible and safe to apply to reconstructing pancreaticojejunostomy.
Rectal foreign bodies are being detected more frequently, and their textures, sizes, shapes, and locations are critical considerations when removal and deciding on management plans. Many removal techniques have been described and various theories have been put forward to explain procedural mechanics. Here the authors report a case in which a transanal technique using a SILS port was successfully used.
Abstract Bile duct stones, which obstruct the common bile duct, potentially result in complications, such as acute cholangitis and pancreatitis. We present a case involving a patient with normal liver function tests from whom we removed a giant common bile duct stone measuring 7.5 centimeters × 4.0 centimeters × 4.0 centimeters. Postoperatively recurrent common bile duct stones were observed and removed with an endoscopic maneuver in the three-year follow-up period. Recurrent bile duct stones ar
