15BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been reported to be a predisposing factor for the progression of TR in patients with previous mitral or combined mitral/aortic valve surgery. We hypothesized that the maze operation (MAZE) can prevent the progression of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) in these patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed 170 patients (age, 45.5+/-10.9 years) who had undergone mitral or combined mitral/aortic valve surgery. On the basis of preoperative rhythm, patients were div
AIMS: There has been growing attention for the development of functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR) long after left-sided valve surgery. We attempted to determine the long-term haemodynamic effects of corrective surgery for severe functional TR in patients who had prior left-sided valve surgery using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-one patients with severe functional TR (TR fraction of 46.0+/-16.2% by CMR) were analysed. CMR was performed within 1 month be
OBJECTIVES: Recommendations on physical activity (PA) for adults with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are not well established. We investigated the association of PA intensity with mortality in the general adult HCM population. METHODS: A nationwide population-based cohort of individuals with HCM who underwent health check-ups including questionnaires on PA levels were identified from the years 2009 to 2016 in the National Health Insurance Service database. Subjects who reported no PA at basel
Aims Dyslipidaemia is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor with prognostic implications. Current strategies for lipid management in young adults are largely based on expert recommendations. We investigated the risks of death and cardiovascular disease in relation to each lipid component to establish evidence for primary prevention in young adults. Methods In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we analysed 5,688,055 statin-naïve subjects, aged 20–39 years, undergoing general health
Temporal trends of the prevalence and incidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have not been well established in Asian populations. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Services database, we identified patients with a confirmed diagnosis of HCM between 2010 and 2016. The annual prevalence and incidence of HCM, and their clinical characteristics were investigated. The prevalence of HCM has increased from 0.016% (n = 6313) in 2010 to 0.031% (n = 13,035) in 2016. During a 7-year period,
Aims We sought to investigate the association of obesity and metabolic health status with the incidence of clinical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) diagnosis in the general population. Our goal was to identify modifiable risk factors to attenuate clinical expression of HCM, enabling management evolution from a mostly passive strategy of risk stratification to a proactive strategy of modifying disease expression. Methods Using nationwide population-based data from the Korean National Health Ins
AIMS: We investigated the prognostic role of left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS) and its incremental value to established risk models for predicting sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). METHODS AND RESULTS: LV-GLS was measured with vendor-independent software at a core laboratory in a cohort of 835 patients with HCM (aged 56.3 ± 12.2 years) followed-up for a median of 6.4 years. The primary endpoint was SCD events, including appropriate
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesised that, in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is progressive and can be predicted by baseline CMR findings and HCM phenotype. METHODS: In this single-centre cohort study, 71 patients with HCM (59±13 years; 48 men) were prospectively enrolled with clinical, echocardiographic and CMR data. Two consecutive CMR scans were performed with a time interval of 582±174 days. The LGE extent was quantified as a pr
OBJECTIVE: The hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) risk-sudden cardiac death (SCD) calculator endorsed by the 2014 European Society of Cardiology has not been independently validated in the Asians. We aimed to investigate whether the HCM Risk-SCD calculator effectively predicts SCD in Korean HCM population. METHODS: An observational, longitudinal cohort study was performed in 730 patients with HCM from 2007 to 2017. The primary endpoint was a composite of SCD and appropriate implantable cardiovert
OBJECTIVE: Despite the benefits of weight loss on metabolic profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), its association with myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke (IS), atrial fibrillation (AF), heart failure (HF), and all-cause death remains elusive. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the National Health Insurance Service Database, we screened subjects who underwent general health checkups twice in a 2-year interval between 2009 and 2012. After identifying 1,522,241 patient
AIMS: Native T1 times from T1 mapping cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) are associated with myocardial fibrosis in aortic stenosis (AS). We investigated whether changing patterns in native T1 predict clinical outcomes after aortic valve replacement (AVR) in severe AS patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-three patients with severe AS (65.9 ± 8.1 years; 24 men) who underwent T1 mapping CMR at baseline and 1 year after AVR were prospectively enrolled. Upper limit of native T1 from healthy volunteers
