15OBJECTIVES: Although chronic periodontitis has been associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effect of chronic periodontitis on vascular dementia as well as the role of lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity in this association are still unclear. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Population based. PARTICIPANTS: The study population was derived from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort. Among 262 349 participants,
Moyamoya disease showed various characteristic and age-specific infarct patterns. Different infarct patterns between the A-MMD and C-MMD groups may be associated with age-specific vulnerability of the brain to ischaemia, stage of arteriopathy or changes of abnormal collateral pathways.
This study aimed to evaluate the causal association of periodontal disease with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke, after controlling for various confounders among the Korean population. A retrospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service–National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) was performed during 2002 to 2015 (baseline: 2002 to 2005; follow-up: 2006 to 2015) in the Republic of Korea. A total of 298,128 participants with no history of AMI or stroke were foll
MOTIVATION: Despite the success of recent machine learning algorithms' applications to survival analysis, their black-box nature hinders interpretability, which is arguably the most important aspect. Similarly, multi-omics data integration for survival analysis is often constrained by the underlying relationships and correlations that are rarely well understood. The goal of this work is to alleviate the interpretability problem in machine learning approaches for survival analysis and also demons
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of dental caries in 11-year-old children, related to water fluoridation and family affluence scale (FAS), as an indicator of socioeconomic status (SES) in Korea. METHODS: A total of eight areas were selected for study: four areas with fluoridated piped water (WF areas) and four areas with nonfluoridated piped water (non-WF areas). Non-WF areas had a similar economic level and population size compared with the WF areas. A total of 144
Antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens is a chronic health concern. Bacteria possess or acquire various mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, and chief among them is the ability to accumulate beneficial mutations that often alter antibiotic targets. Here, we explored E. coli's ability to amass mutations in a background devoid of a major constitutively expressed efflux pump and identified mutations in several regulatory genes that confer resistance by activating specific or pleiotropic me
BACKGROUND: The concept of the ideal morphology for the alveolar bone form is an important element to reconstruct or restore the in maximizing esthetic profile and functional alveolar bone restoration. The purpose of this preliminary study is to evaluate the normal alveolar bone structure to provide the standard reference and guide template for use in diagnosing for implant placement, determining the correct amount of bone augmentation in actual clinical practice and producing prostheses based o
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the systemic effect of water fluoridation on dental caries prevalence and experience in Cheongju, South Korea, where water fluoridation ceased 7 years previously. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was employed at two schools where water fluoridation had ceased (WF-ceased area) and at two schools where the water had never been fluoridated (non-WF area). The schools in the non-WF area were of a similar population size to the schools in the WF-cease
Abstract Background This study aimed to determine the association between chronic periodontitis (CP) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) according to CP severity in the Korean population based on the National Health Insurance Service database. Methods Data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS), conducted from 2002 to 2013, were analyzed. A total of 363,541 participants were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Data on socio-demographi
Physical activity reduces the risk and mortality risk of inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to examine the relationship between regular walking and periodontitis in a Korean representative sample of adults according to socioeconomic status. Data acquired by the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014 and 2015 were used. The survey was completed by 11,921 (5,175 males; 6,746 females) participants (≥19 years). Individuals without values on periodontitis were exclu
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mitigating effect of the use of interdental brushes on periodontal health inequality. METHODS: This study was based on the data acquired in the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI; 2013-2015). A total of 17,583 participants (7,633 males and 9,950 females)) aged 19 years or older completed the KNHANES VI between 2013 and 2015. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed using socioeconomic
This study aimed to investigate the effect of interdental brushes and dental floss on the prevention of periodontitis in participants with ≥ 20 or < 20 remaining teeth by using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018. Data from 11,614 participants were analysed using multivariate logistic regression after adjusting for sociodemographic factors (age and sex), socioeconomic factors (level of education and individual income), oral health-related variables (daily toothbr
Although structural DNA nanotechnology is a well-established field, computations performed using DNA algorithmic self-assembly is still in the primitive stages in terms of its adaptability of rule implementation and experimental complexity. Here, we discuss the feasibility of constructing an M-input/ N-output logic gate implemented into simple DNA building blocks. To date, no experimental demonstrations have been reported with M > 2 owing to the difficulty of tile design. To overcome this proble
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the association between the use of interdental cleaning devices and proximal caries experience. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional data from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). A total of 13 525 adults aged 19-64 years who participated in both the nutrition survey and the health examination survey were included. Data on sociodemographic factors (age and sex), socioeconomic factors (level of education and household income)
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between general physical activity level and TMD pain in Koreans in a large-scale national database established through a nationwide survey. METHODS: Data from the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV), which was conducted from 2007 to 2009, were analysed. In total, 16 941 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, TMD-related variables, and gen
