Insulin Resistance and Its Association with Metabolic Syndrome in Korean Children
Jinkyung Cho, Haeryun Hong, Soohyun Park, Shinuk Kim, Hyun‐Sik Kang
SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

Background . This study investigated the association between insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children. Methods . A cross-sectional study involving 1036 healthy children aged between 7 and 13 years was conducted. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated as an index of IR. Participants were classified according to the HOMA-IR quartiles. Results . Incremental, linear trends were found in age (<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Mat

SJR Q1BMC GeriatricsOA

BACKGROUND: Decreased muscle strength and/or depression with aging are emerging as important public health concerns in both developed and developing countries. This study investigated the effects of low handgrip strength (HGS) and depression on the risk of all-cause mortality in Korean older adults. METHODS: Data from 13,901 Korean adults (57% women) who participated in the 2008 baseline survey and completed the 2011 follow-up assessments were used. RESULTS: In total, the current findings showed

Lifestyle Risk Factors and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging
Inhwan Lee, Shinuk Kim, Hyun‐Sik Kang
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study examined the association between lifestyle risk factors and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in 9945 Korea adults (56% women) aged 45 years and older. Smoking, heavy alcohol intake, underweight or obesity, physical inactivity, and unintentional weight loss (UWL) were included as risk factors. During 9.6 ± 2.0 years of follow-up, there were a total of 1530 cases of death from all causes, of which 365 cases were from CVD. Compared to a zero risk factor (hazard ratio,

Background . Little information is available about molecular markers for sarcopenia and osteoporosis in Asian populations. Objective . This study investigated the association of the ACTN3 polymorphism with sarcopenia and osteoporotic status in older Korean adults. Methods . Older Korean 62 men and 270 women (mean age 73.7 ± 6.6 years) participated in this study. Body mass index, percent body fatness, appendicular skeletal muscle mass, and bone mineral density of the lumbar spine, femur, and tota

Exercise training modifies gut microbiota with attenuated host responses to sepsis in wild‐type mice
Donghyun Kim, Hyun‐Sik Kang
SJR Q1The FASEB Journal

This study investigated the effects of exercise preconditioning-induced modification in gut microbiota composition and host responses to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis. Four-week-old C57BL/6N male mice were randomly assigned to either CLP ( n = 30) or CLP-exercise (CLP+Exe; n = 30) groups. Prior to CLP-induced sepsis, the CLP+Exe mice were subjected to 8 wk of treadmill running. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed by 16S rRNA amplification sequencing to assess gut microbi

Association between Obesity and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Korean Office Workers: The Mediating Effect of Physical Activity
Youngyun Jin, Donghyun Kim, Jinkyung Cho, Inhwan Lee, Kyu-Hwan Choi, Hyun‐Sik Kang
SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

BACKGROUND: Obesity and physical inactivity are associated with higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between obesity and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) stratified by physical activity (PA) in Korean office workers. METHODS: Data obtained from 914 office workers aged 21-60 years (347 women) were used. Resting blood pressures, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were measured. PA was assessed using the inte

SJR Q1Biology of SportOA

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between physical fitness and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in elderly Koreans. This was a cross-sectional study that involved 134 men and 299 women aged 65 to 88 years. Six senior fitness tests were used as independent variables: 30 s chair stand for lower body strength, arm curl for upper body strength, chair-sit-and-reach for lower body flexibility, back scratch for upper body flexibility, 8-ft up-and-go for agility/dynamic balance

SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Background: Little is known regarding the role of eating quickly, physical inactivity, and poor cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in assessing the onset of metabolic syndrome (Mets) in Korean young adults. Objectives: This study examined the association between the three risk factors and Mets in 1891 Korean university students (30% female) aged 18–29 years. Methods: Eating speed (slow vs. fast) and physical activity (active vs. inactive) were assessed with a standardized questionnaire. Maximal oxy
