Comparison of frictional forces on graphene and graphite

SJR Q2Nanotechnology

We report on the frictional force between an SiN tip and graphene/graphite surfaces using lateral force microscopy. The cantilever we have used was made of an SiN membrane and has a low stiffness of 0.006 N m(-1). We prepared graphene flakes on a Si wafer covered with silicon oxides. The frictional force on graphene was smaller than that on the Si oxide and larger than that on graphite (multilayer of graphene). Force spectroscopy was also employed to study the van der Waals force between the gra

Short-chain aminosilanes, namely, bis(N,N-dimethylamino)dimethylsilane (DMADMS) and (N,N-dimethylamino)trimethylsilane (DMATMS), have been used as Si precursors for atomic layer deposition (ALD) of SiO2. In this work, the DMADMS and DMATMS Si precursors are utilized as inhibitors for area-selective ALD (AS-ALD). The inhibitors selectively adsorb on a SiO2 surface but not on H–Si, so that SiO2 becomes selectively deactivated toward subsequent ALD. The deactivation of the SiO2 surface by the inhib

Enhancement of Friction by Water Intercalated between Graphene and Mica

SJR Q1The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters

Common experience shows that friction converts mechanical energy into heat. The first part of this process is vibrational excitation of atoms at the interface between rubbing bodies. The second part is the removal of the vibration energy by transferring it from the interface to the substrate. However, it is difficult to disentangle the excitation and energy transfer processes. We solved this by using a system consisting of a SiO 2 -terminated tip sliding over graphene deposited on mica with inte

Maltogenic amylase and alpha-glucanotransferase (alpha-GTase) were employed in an effort to develop an efficient process for the production of isomaltooligosaccharides (IMOs). Bacillus stearothermophilus maltogenic amylase (BSMA) and alpha-GTase from Thermotoga maritima were overexpressed in Escherichia coli using overexpression vectors. An IMO mixture containing 58% of various IMOs was produced from liquefied corn syrup by the hydrolyzing and transglycosylation activities of BSMA alone. When BS

Internal and External Atomic Steps in Graphite Exhibit Dramatically Different Physical and Chemical Properties
Hyunsoo Lee, Han‐Bo‐Ram Lee, Sangku Kwon, Miquel Salmerón, Jeong Young Park
SJR Q1ACS Nano

We report on the physical and chemical properties of atomic steps on the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) investigated using atomic force microscopy. Two types of step edges are identified: internal (formed during crystal growth) and external (formed by mechanical cleavage of bulk HOPG). The external steps exhibit higher friction than the internal steps due to the broken bonds of the exposed edge C atoms, while carbon atoms in the internal steps are not exposed. The reactivit

Nanoscale Schottky behavior of Au islands on TiO2 probed with conductive atomic force microscopy
Hyunsoo Lee, Young Keun Lee, Trong Nghia Van, Jeong Young Park
SJR Q1Applied Physics LettersOA

Electrical properties of nanoscale Au islands on n-type TiO2, which form a Schottky junction nanodiode, have been investigated using conductive atomic force microscopy at ultra-high vacuum. The Au islands were formed using colloidal self-assembled patterns on an n-type TiO2 semiconductor film using the Langmuir-Blodgett process. Characteristics of the nanoscale Schottky contact were determined by fitting the local current–voltage plot to the thermionic emission equation, which reveals the Schott

We investigated the subdomain structures of single-layer graphene oxide (GO) by characterizing local friction and conductance using conductive atomic force microscopy. Friction and conductance mapping showed that a single-layer GO flake has subdomains several tens to a few hundreds of nanometers in lateral size. The GO subdomains exhibited low friction (high conductance) in the sp(2)-rich phase and high friction (low conductance) in the sp(3)-rich phase. Current-voltage spectroscopy revealed tha

A Novel Pro-Angiogenic Function for Interferon-γ–Secreting Natural Killer Cells

SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

PURPOSE: To explore the function of natural killer (NK) cells in inflammatory angiogenesis in mice. METHODS: To study ocular angiogenic responses we used the cornea BFGF micropellet and the laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) mouse models (C57BL/6). To deplete NK cells in these models, we injected an anti-NK1.1 antibody or an isotype antibody as a control. Corneas or choroids were immunohistochemically stained for blood vessels (CD31), macrophages (F4/80), or CNV (isolectin-IB4). Va

Interleukin-10 protects cultured fetal rat type II epithelial cells from injury induced by mechanical stretch

SJR Q1American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

Mechanical ventilation plays a central role in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. However, the mechanisms by which excessive stretch of fetal or neonatal type II epithelial cells contributes to lung injury are not well defined. In these investigations, isolated embryonic day 19 fetal rat type II epithelial cells were cultured on substrates coated with fibronectin and exposed to 5% or 20% cyclic stretch to simulate mechanical forces during lung development or lung injury, respectivel

SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

A nanoscale Schottky diode using Pt nanodisks on a Nb-doped SrTiO3 (Nb:STO) single crystal was fabricated, and resistive switching (RS) was demonstrated with conductive atomic force microscopy at ultrahigh vacuum. Pt disks with diameters on the order of 10 nm were formed using colloidal self-assembled patterns of silica nanospheres, followed by evaporation of the Pt layers on the Nb:STO single crystal. Here we show that the reproducible bipolar RS behavior of the nanoscale Pt/Nb:STO Schottky jun

Height determination of single-layer graphene on mica at controlled humidity using atomic force microscopy
Hyunsoo Lee, Jeong Young Park
SJR Q2Review of Scientific Instruments

Identifying the thickness of the first graphene layer on a substrate is important in graphene-based nanoelectromechanical systems because of the dependence of graphene layers on physical and chemical properties. Identifying the thickness of the first layer is important for determining the number of graphene layers. Herein, we report that the height of single-layer graphene on mica is influenced by the relative humidity in the observation environment and by the scanning modes of in situ atomic fo

Collecting large-scale mobile and wearable sensor datasets from daily contexts is essential in developing machine learning models for enabling everyday affective computing applications. However, there is a lack of knowledge on data contributors' perceived benefits and risks in participating in open dataset collection projects. To bridge this gap, we conducted an in-situ study on building an open dataset with mobile and wearable devices for affective computing research (N = 100, 4 weeks). Our stu
