15PURPOSE: Application of independent component analysis (ICA) to interictal EEGs and to event-related potentials has helped noise reduction and source localization. However, ICA has not been used for the analysis of ictal EEGs in partial seizures. In this study, we applied ICA to the ictal EEGs of patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and investigated whether ictal components can be separated and whether they indicate correct lateralization. METHODS: Twenty-four EEGs from medial TLE p
PURPOSE: The presence of two or more epileptogenic pathologies in patients with epilepsy is often observed, and the coexistence of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is one of the most frequent clinical presentations. Although surgical resection has been an important treatment for patients with refractory epilepsy associated with FCD, there are few studies on the surgical treatment of FCD accompanied by HS, and treatment by resection of both neocortical dysplastic tis
Much of the information described by well-educated observers is reliable. However, every physician should keep in mind the limitations of this information and use this information cautiously.
As an objectively good sleep does not match the subjective good-sleep perception in OSA, physicians should keep in mind that OSA patients who perceive that they have slept well does not mean that their OSA is less severe.
Reduced cerebrovascular compliance is the major mechanism of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) also promotes SVD development, but the underlying mechanism was not elucidated. We investigated the association among OSA, cerebrovascular compliance, and SVD parameters. This study retrospectively included individuals ≥ 50 years of age, underwent overnight polysomnographic (PSG) for the evaluation of OSA, and performed MRI and transcranial Doppler (TCD) within 12 month
BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in nocturnal blood pressure dipping are well known for its relationship to cardiovascular diseases. Cerebral microbleeds are frequently observed in patients with hypertension and are known to be potent risk factors for stroke. However, there are scanty reports about the relationship between nocturnal dipping and cerebral microbleeds. METHODS: We recruited consecutive patients with both hypertension and ischemic stroke within 7 days after symptom onset, and those with ca
Nocturnal stridor is a breathing disorder prevalent in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). An improved understanding of this breathing disorder is essential since nocturnal stridor carries a poor prognosis (an increased risk of sudden death). In this study, we aimed to classify types of stridor by sound analysis and to reveal their clinical significance. Patients who met the criteria for probable MSA and had undergone polysomnography (PSG) were recruited. Patients were then assessed cli
OBJECTIVE: Alteration of bone strength is an adverse effect of antiepileptic drug treatment. We investigated the effects of zonisamide (ZNS) monotherapy on bone mineral density (BMD) and biomarkers of bone metabolism after 13 months of treatment in drug-naive epileptic patients. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with new onset drug-naive epilepsy were enrolled (29 women, 30 men; mean age = 31.5 ± 11.5 years). The BMD and T scores were measured at the lumbar spine and femoral neck by using dual-energy
MSA itself does not affect the macro- and microstructures of sleep. However, patients with MSA sleep less and it cannot be explained by obstructive sleep apnea and periodic limb movements during sleep.
Video streaming on mobile devices is on the rise. According to recent reports, mobile video streaming traffic accounted for 52.8% of total mobile data traffic in 2011, and it is forecast to reach 66.4% in 2015. We analyzed the network traffic behaviors of the two most popular HTTP-based video streaming services: YouTube and Netflix. Our research indicates that the network traffic behavior depends on factors such as the type of device, multimedia applications in use and network conditions. Furthe
