BACKGROUND: Anoctamin (ANO)/transmembrane member 16 (TMEM16) proteins mediate diverse physiological and pathophysiological functions including cancer cell proliferation. The present study aimed to identify the role of ANOs in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: In an initial screen of ANOs, ANO9/TMEM16J was overexpressed in pancreatic cancer cells, and its role in the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer was evaluated using an integrated in vitro and in vivo approach. To determine clinical relevance of the

Dry eye disease (DED) after cataract surgery has become a critical concern, and various therapeutic options have been developed. Recently, preservative-free diquafosol ophthalmic solution has been introduced; however, its therapeutic effect on DED after cataract surgery has not been reported. We investigated the efficacy of preservative-free diquafosol in patients with pre-existing DED after cataract surgery. We divided subjects who were diagnosed with DED and scheduled to undergo cataract surge

BACKGROUND: To compare the clinical outcomes of wavefront-optimized (WFO) transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (trans-PRK) and corneal wavefront-guided (CWFG) trans-PRK for myopic eyes with moderate to high astigmatism. METHODS: One hundred ninety-six eyes (196 patients) with moderate to high astigmatism (≥ 1.75 D) treated with WFO or CWFG trans-PRK (101 and 95 eyes, respectively) were retrospectively registered. Safety, efficacy, predictability, vector analysis, and corneal aberrations w

KEY POINTS: Cellular stimuli can modulate the ion selectivity of some anion channels, such as CFTR, ANO1 and the glycine receptor (GlyR), by changing pore size. Ion selectivity of CFTR, ANO1 and GlyR is critically affected by the electric permittivity and diameter of the channel pore. Pore size change affects the energy barriers of ion dehydration as well as that of size-exclusion of anion permeation. Pore dilatation increases the bicarbonate permeability (P HC O3/ Cl ) of CFTR, ANO1 and GlyR. D

Adult-onset vitelliform macular dystrophy (AVMD) is a common and benign macular degeneration which can be caused by BEST1 mutation. Here, we investigated the clinical characteristics associated with a newly identified BEST1 mutation, p.Ile38Ser and confirmed the associated physiological functional defects. The 51-year-old patient presented bilateral small subretinal yellow deposits. Consistent with AVMD, the corresponding lesions showed hyperautofluorescence, late staining in fluorescein angiogr

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are a spectrum of diseases that cause an acute vesiculobullous reaction in the skin and mucous membranes. The occurrence of these diseases is associated with various drugs, a large proportion of which is comprised cold medicines (CM). We try to investigate the association between human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I genes and CM-related SJS/TEN (CM-SJS/TEN) with severe ocular complications (SOC) in the Korean p
