15OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine the efficacy and prognostic factors of extended transsternal thymectomy as a treatment for myasthenia gravis (MG). METHODS: Medical records of 147 patients who underwent extended transsternal thymectomy for MG from January 1991 to December 2002 were reviewed retrospectively. The complete stable remission (CSR) rate and prognostic factors for CSR were assessed in 106 female and 41 male patients. RESULTS: The median age was 35 years (range 11-75 years). Ni
BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features and surgical outcomes of patients with a surgically resected NSCLC invading chest wall in order to identify prognostic factors that impact long term survival. METHODS: Between January 1990 and December 2009, 107 patients who underwent surgical resection for chest wall invading NSCLC were reviewed. Tumors invading only the parietal pleura were defined as superficial invasions, and those involving the soft tissue or ribs were defined as
OBJECTIVE: Although designated as T4 or M1 in the current TNM classification system revised in 1997, non-small cell lung cancer with ipsilateral pulmonary metastases is treated as a locally advanced disease and reported survival rates are relatively good. We intended to analyze the prognosis of ipsilateral pulmonary metastases and validate current TNM classification system. METHODS: Data of 1213 surgically treated patients with non-small cell lung cancer from January 1990 to December 2004 were r
We propose an algorithm to construct a 3-D surface model from a set of range data, based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) surface-fitting technique. It is assumed that the range data is initially unorganized and scattered 3-D points, while their connectivity is also unknown. The proposed algorithm consists of three stages: initial model approximation employing K-means clustering, hierarchical decomposition of the initial model, and construction of the NURBS surface patch network. The in
OBJECTIVE: To compare nutritional and postoperative outcomes between early oral feeding and late oral feeding with jejunostomy feeding support after esophagectomy. BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy is associated with substantial body weight loss and malnutrition, impacting the prognosis of esophageal cancer patients. Despite many studies on postesophagectomy nutritional support, optimal strategies remain elusive. This study investigates the impact of jejunostomy feeding with late oral feeding compared t
OBJECTIVES: The current understanding of pulmonary invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma is largely based on studies of advanced stage patients and data about early-stage invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma are sparse. We evaluated the radiological and clinical features of screening-detected early-stage invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma (SD-IMA). METHODS: Data from 91 patients who underwent surgical treatment for SD-IMA (≤3 cm) from 2013 to 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Data on radiological charact
Thoracoscopic resection of small subsolid nodules is challenging and requires preoperative localization. We investigated the efficacy, safety, and factors affecting accuracy in localizing pulmonary nodules with electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided dye marking.Patients with small subsolid nodule(s) who underwent thoracoscopic resection after ENB-guided dye marking were retrospectively reviewed. Dye marking was performed at the nearest pleura and the localized nodule(s) was resecte
OBJECTIVES: The prognostic effects of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutation on lung adenocarcinoma recurrence have not been well established. The relationship between EGFR gene mutation and recurrence dynamics of lung adenocarcinoma was investigated. METHODS: A total of 527 patients with complete resection for adenocarcinoma were reviewed retrospectively. EGFR gene mutation was analysed by polymerase chain reaction followed by bidirectional direct sequencing in recurred patients.
Chest x ray and CT scan are sufficient to diagnose SPM. Additional diagnostic assessments such as oesophagography and oesophagoscopy are not necessary in patients without evidence of mediastinitis or a history of oesophageal injury.
We propose an algorithm to produce a 3-D CAD model from a set of range data, based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) surface fitting technique. Our goal is to construct continuous geometric models, assuming that the topology of surface is unknown. In our approach, a divide-and-conquer strategy is adopted, in which the whole range data is partitioned into surface patches. Each patch is sequentially processed to form the quadrilateral face model, which is used to construct the NURBS patch
