Body mass index and severity/fatality from coronavirus disease 2019: A nationwide epidemiological study in Korea
In Sook Kang, Kyoung Ae Kong
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

OBJECTIVE: Obesity has been reported as a risk factor for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in recent studies. However, the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and COVID-19 severity and fatality are unclear. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study included 4,141 COVID-19 patients who were released from isolation or had died as of April 30, 2020. This nationwide data was provided by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Agency. BMI was categorized as follows; < 18.

SJR Q1Frontiers in Cardiovascular MedicineOA

Background: Acute respiratory viral infections can result in cardiovascular involvement, with such patients having a significantly higher mortality rate than those without cardiovascular involvement. Due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is important to determine whether cardiovascular risk factors are associated with the severity of COVID-19. Methods: These nationwide data were provided by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. We defined a patient as hav

Characterization of Human Cardiac Mesenchymal Stromal Cells and Their Extracellular Vesicles Comparing With Human Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Cardiac regeneration with adult stem-cell (ASC) therapy is a promising field to address advanced cardiovascular diseases. In addition, extracellular vesicles (EVs) from ASCs have been implicated in acting as paracrine factors to improve cardiac functions in ASC therapy. In our work, we isolated human cardiac mesenchymal stromal cells (h-CMSCs) by means of three-dimensional organ culture (3D culture) during ex vivo expansion of cardiac tissue, to compare the functional efficacy with human bone-ma

Association between Central Obesity and Circadian Parameters of Blood Pressure from the Korean Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Registry: Kor-ABP Registry
In Sook Kang, Wook Bum Pyun, Jinho Shin, Ju Han Kim, Soon Gil Kim, Gil Ja Shin
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Central obesity has been reported as a risk for atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. The influence of central obesity on diurnal blood pressure (BP) has not been established. In this study, we investigated the influence of central obesity on the circadian parameters of BP by 24 hr ambulatory BP monitoring. Total 1,290 subjects were enrolled from the Korean Ambulatory BP registry. Central obesity was defined as having a waist circumference≥90 cm in males and ≥85 cm in females. The central-obes

The diagnostic utility of chest computed tomography scoring for the assessment of amiodarone-induced pulmonary toxicity
In Sook Kang, Kyung Jin Kim, Yookyung Kim, Seong‐Hoon Park
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Amiodarone is one of the most widely used antiarrhythmic agents; however, amiodarone-induced pulmonary toxicity (APT) can be irreversible and sometimes fatal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of chest computed tomography (CT) as a diagnostic tool for APT and to assess the utility of the CT APT score as an index for predicting the severity of APT. METHODS: Patients underwent amiodarone treatment for various reasons, most often atrial fibrillation, for more th

Therapeutic Hypothermia for Cardioprotection in Acute Myocardial Infarction
In Sook Kang, Fumiaki Ikeno, Wook Bum Pyun
SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Mild therapeutic hypothermia of 32-35°C improved neurologic outcomes in outside hospital cardiac arrest survivor. Furthermore, in experimental studies on infarcted model and pilot studies on conscious patients with acute myocardial infarction, therapeutic hypothermia successfully reduced infarct size and microvascular resistance. Therefore, mild therapeutic hypothermia has received an attention as a promising solution for reduction of infarction size after acute myocardial infarction which are n

Predictive value of CHADS2 score for cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome and documented coronary artery disease
In Sook Kang, Wook Bum Pyun, Gil Ja Shin
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The CHADS2 score, used to predict the risk of ischemic stroke in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, has been reported recently to predict ischemic stroke in patients with coronary heart disease, regardless of the presence of AF. However, little data are available regarding the relationship between the CHADS2 score and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on 104 patients admitted for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who underwent coronary angiography, car

Potential application of biomimetic exosomes in cardiovascular disease: focused on ischemic heart disease
In Sook Kang, Kihwan Kwon
SJR Q1BMB ReportsOA

Cardiovascular disease, especially ischemic heart disease, is a major cause of mortality worldwide. Cardiac repair is one of the most promising strategies to address advanced cardiovascular diseases. Despite moderate improvement in heart function via stem cell therapy, there is no evidence of significant improvement in mortality and morbidity beyond standard therapy. The most salutary effect of stem cell therapy are attributed to the paracrine effects and the stem cell-derived exosomes are known

Background: ST-T segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a critical condition that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. Recently, various ECG recording devices have been developed. In this study, we aim to determine the utility of a 6-lead handheld ECG recording device to shorten the time taken for the diagnosis of inferior wall STEMI. Methods and Design: HINT-MI is an investigator-derived, observational, prospective study that will evaluate the ability of a handheld 6-lead ECG dev

Amiodarone-Induced Pulmonary Toxicity: Percutaneous Needle Aspiration Biopsy and Ultrastructural Findings
In Sook Kang, Jin Hwa Lee, Sun Hee Sung, Seong‐Hoon Park
The Ewha Medical JournalOA

Amiodarone has been widely used for supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias and many patients benefit from its effectiveness in treating potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. However, this drug can cause multi-organ toxicity, including amiodarone-induced pulmonary toxicity (APT). Not only does amiodarone have a long half-life but also is lipophilic and therefore can easily accumulate in tissues. Hence, it is difficult to monitor therapeutic levels and side effects, making it difficult t

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant increase in cardiovascular events in women after menopause, studies comparing postmenopausal women and men are scarce. METHODS: We analyzed data from a nationwide, multicenter, prospective registry and enrolled 2412 patients with stable chest pain who underwent elective coronary angiography. Binary coronary artery disease (b-CAD) was defined as the ≥50% stenosis of epicardial coronary arteries, including the left main coronary artery. RESULTS: Compared with th
