User authentication for accurate biometric systems is becoming necessary in modern real-world applications. Authentication systems based on biometric identifiers such as faces and fingerprints are being applied in a variety of fields in preference over existing password input methods. Face imaging is the most widely used biometric identifier because the registration and authentication process is noncontact and concise. However, it is comparatively easy to acquire face images using SNS, etc., and
This paper proposes a non-contact plant growth measurement system using infrared sensors based on the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) technology. The proposed system measures plant growth parameters such as the stem radius of plants using real-time non-contact methods, and generates diameter, cross-sectional area and thickening form of plant stems using this measured data. Non-contact sensors have been used not to cause any damage to plants during measurement of the growth parameters. Once the g
This paper presents a novel and sustainable medium access control (MAC) scheme for wireless sensor network (WSN) systems that process high-dimensional aggregated data. Based on a preamble signal and buffer threshold analysis, it maximizes the energy efficiency of the wireless sensor devices which have limited energy resources. The proposed group management MAC (GM-MAC) approach not only sets the buffer threshold value of a sensor device to be reciprocal to the preamble signal but also sets a tra
In this paper, we propose a hospital sensor network deployment method for smart healthcare systems. Since sensor nodes in hospitals are always in an environment where power can be supplied, it is essential to have stable network connectivity by achieving optimal gateway deployment, rather than focusing on energy efficiency. The proposed technique leads to an access point (AP) layout that minimizes the overall network operation cost. The operation cost is calculated per unit time, and it includes
The existence of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) provides a novel and great opportunity to enhance user quality of service (QoS) by enabling local communication. The 5th generation (5G) communication is consisting of massive connectivity at the Radio Access Network (RAN), where the tremendous user traffic will be generated and sent to fronthaul and backhaul gateways, respectively. Since fronthaul and backhaul gateways are commonly installed by using optical networks, the bottleneck network will occu
When it comes to Internet of Things systems that include both a logistics system and an intelligent transportation system, a smart sensor is one of the key elements to collect useful information whenever and wherever necessary. This study proposes the Smart Sensor Node Group Management Medium Access Control Scheme designed to group smart sensor devices and collect data from them efficiently. The proposed scheme performs grouping of portable sensor devices connected to a system depending on the d
The rapid increase in the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks has led to an exponential growth in data generation and an unprecedented demand for efficient resource management infrastructure. Ensuring end-to-end communication across multiple heterogeneous network domains is crucial to maintaining Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as low latency and high computational capacity, for IoT applications. However, limited computing resources at multi-access edge computing (
In this paper, we present an efficient way to find a gateway deployment for a given sensor network topology. We assume that the expired sensors and gateways can be replaced and the locations of the gateways are chosen among the given sensor nodes. The objective is to find a gateway deployment that minimizes the cost per unit time, which consists of the maintenance and installation costs. The proposed algorithm creates a cost reference and uses it to find the optimal deployment via a divide and c
Wireless sensor network becomes crucial with the appearance of the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT roots in the sensors’ data and the technology to transmit the data to the sink. As the importance of IoT arises, the MAC protocols to transmit the data are proposed in many papers. Initially, the sensor devices and the sink remain stationary. As the technology has been advanced, the sensor devices start to move. Accordingly, novel protocols have been proposed for the changing topology. In this paper,
