This study looks closely at the treatment of the Korean War (1950–1953) in Indignation , by Philip Roth ( ), and Home , by Toni Morrison ( ), and reads in those works a re‐evaluation of the American experience in Korea in light of the conditions and concerns of the post‐9/11 era. In their portrayal of the forgotten Korean War, Roth and Morrison challenge redeployment of 1950s Cold War‐style frames and rhetoric by the Bush–Cheney administration in the context of the “War on Terror” and state viol
In “The Task of the Translator,” Walter Benjamin claims that when understood as a mode, translation highlights kinship and disparity between different languages. Thus, without effacing linguistic and cultural differences, this “translationability” exposes innate alterity within each language. When this “mode” is conceived with cultural and individual particulars in mind, it can institute a more refined understanding of translation that is more sensitive toward the Other. Slow Man, the first nove
Publised in 2000, Don DeLillo's The Body Artist is radicaaly different from his previous works in its theme and scope. Instead of offering a panoramic overview of the effects of global capitalism, the short novel proves into the traumatized mind of a body artist. In The Body Artist DeLillo experiments with the narrative form as it performs, rather than heals, the trauma. As a result, the reader is invieted to participate in the protagonist's gradual recognition of her self as irreversibly damage
This paper examines major issues in recent discussion of cosmopolitanism and analyze Yoon’s rendering of cosmopolitan interactions in Snow Hunters. The newly forming cosmopolitanism, distinct from the traditional one that was refined in Western Europe under the influence the Enlightenment, is less antagonistic to nationalism and more focused on gaps, crevices, and overlaps in the national and cultural boundaries. Its goal is to delineate basic ethical responsibility toward political and cultural
This essay examines both the practice of translation and the trope of it as they are represented and reproduced by Susan Choi`s The Foreign Student. Chang and Katherine, the two protagonists of the novel, succeed in redefining each other outside the limiting social categorization and in relation to each other. This is made possible not because they identify with each other, but because they appreciate and respond to the complete Otherness each poses to the other. I argue that this relation is mo

American cultural and political presentations of 9/11 often resort to the easily recognizable narrative convention of Bildungsroman, intensifying the nostalgia for an illusory, ideal past before the crisis. Evoking the classic novel Jane Eyre as well as the history of its reading, Patricia Park’s Re Jane and Susan Choi’s My Education disrupt the narrative scheme of initiation, destabilizing and questioning the popular way of understanding growth in connection to the experience of 9/11. Both nove
In 2011, Please Look After Mom, a translation of a mega-bestseller novel in Korea, entered the American literary market with a significant commercial success. A close analysis of the translation, along with the celebration and controversy it caused on both sides of the pacific, reveal interesting and often paradoxical ideas about translation and its role in introducing cultural differences. The Korean original, Ommarul Put’akhae, employs translation to signify radical unsettling differences, and
Julie Otsuka’s latest novel, The Buddha in the Attic, is an unconventional Asian American novel in the sense that it emphasizes the break between Japanese American mothers and their daughters. Despite an attachment to their mothers, Japanese picture brides in the novel are separated from them by paternal authority and physical distance. They become mothers in America, but instead of being a source of inspiration and strength, the alienation they experience from their daughters renders them helpl
(How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia)는 풍자적인 제목에서도 알 수 있듯이 자기계발 문학의 패러디이며 그렇게 논의되어왔다. Moshin Hamid’s How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia almost announces itself to be a parody of self-help literature and has been duly discussed as such. Two recent novels on the Korea War, Lark and Termite and The Coldest Night, focus on two particularly disturbing incidents of the Korean War: the No Gun Ri massacre and the battle of the Changjin Reservoir. The novels explore the ways in which these ugly episodes of the war revise the official memory of the Cold War and resonate with the lives of those within the U.S. After excavating and examining the relevance of the Korean War, they simulate the older paradigm of returning to domesticity, ref
This essay examines the ways in which Toni Morrison challenges the 1950s notion of manhood as it is revived in the U.S. after 9/11. In the nationalistic response to the terrorist attack, American politics and popular culture expressed strong nostalgia for the 1950s as it is generally considered to be the period of American dominance and prosperity. However, in Home, Morrison takes “the scab off the 50’s,” as she has announced in an interview. In Home, 1950s American society makes it impossible f

The publication of Paul Yoon’s first book, Once the Shore, heralded the arrival of a remarkable new voice in the Korean American literature scene. This essay examines the unique manner in which this collection of short stories “re-presents” the traumatic modern history of Korea. On an imaginary Korean island where Once the Shore is set, the memory of the violent Korean past-Japanese imperialism, World War II, American military occupation, the Korean War, etc.-is all but lost. In the story “Once
